It was necessary to design a single-floor living space for the aging parent who had recently broken a hip. To allow for a “no-step” main level, the existing sunken family room floor was raised to bring it flush with the adjacent kitchen floor then converted into a spacious dining room. A new great room was constructed which boasts a beautiful corner wood burning stove. This addition created a comfortable and accessible place to relax, at the same time offering a space for larger family gatherings.

The original kitchen in this 1960s ranch home was considerably smaller and separated from the rest of the home by a wall with a small opening. The wall also blocked the view to the original fireplace and built-in bookcase/desk (on the right - the left side was added as part of the remodel). By removing the wall, we were able to expand the kitchen while showcasing the fireplace. The new style of the kitchen has both modern and Craftsman elements - marrying the 60s ranch architecture of the home and the Arts and Crafts furniture and decorations of the homeowners. The first goal for this client in Chatham was to give them a front walk and entrance that was beautiful and grande. We decided to use natural blue bluestone tiles of random sizes. We integrated a custom cut 6" x 9" bluestone border and ran it continuous throughout. Our second goal was to give them walking access from their driveway to their front door. Because their driveway was considerably lower than the front of their home, we needed to cut in a set of steps through their driveway retaining wall, include a number of turns and bridge the walkways with multiple landings. While doing this, we wanted to keep continuity within the building products of choice. We used real stone veneer to side all walls and stair risers to match what was already on the house. We used 2" thick bluestone caps for all stair treads and retaining wall caps. We installed the matching real stone veneer to the face and sides of the retaining wall. All of the bluestone caps were custom cut to seamlessly round all turns. We are very proud of this finished product. We are also very proud to have had the opportunity to work for this family. A 1950’s beach house received a dramatic renovation. While the original floor plan comprised a generous living and dining space, the kitchen had been completely cut off from the rest of the home. We removed several walls, opening the kitchen to the living, dining and bar areas, creating an expansive Great Room with cheerful sunlight and ample space for large family gatherings. White cabinets and ceilings brighten the space considerably, as an island with seating for 4 takes the place of a dated peninsula. The owner, a skilled craftsman, had laid the brick floors piece by piece years ago and wanted to retain his handiwork as part of the new remodel. To incorporate his wishes, we installed a new brick floor in the kitchen to match the existing brick throughout the house. The soft ocean greens, used as accents on the island, backsplash and hood create a beach vibe. As we moved the sink to the island, we covered a not-very- useful sink window to create an appliance wall where a 36″ Wolf CookTop, a pair of wall ovens and a new Sub-Zero fridge are conveniently situated. In the bar, a wine fridge was installed to keep beverages and soft drinks. To retain just a smidge of separation from the formal dining room, a peninsula was installed to separate the two rooms, providing extra work space while allowing a continuous, free flow throughout the rooms.

This compact mid 50's story and a half needed new life in both the kitchen and the main floor bath. While expanding the footprint wasn't really a viable option, restructuring the layout and removing two walls made all the difference. Of course with any major demo and rethink, new surfaces carried a lot of the design impact. Still, since space was a big issue, considerable effort was placed on designing maximum storage over every square inch of cabinet space. For instance, both sides of the new peninsula were designed to accommodate massive storage potential. The "mudroom" bench opens up to store all boots, hats and mittens or sandals and sporting equipment. "Sometimes, I find myself just sitting in my kitchen, and I can't believe this is mine," says the homeowner. Take a look at the before photos and you'll agree.
