Continually Exposed - Photos & Ideas

When we drove out to Mukilteo for our initial consultation, we immediately fell in love with this house. With its tall ceilings, eclectic mix of wood, glass and steel, and gorgeous view of the Puget Sound, we quickly nicknamed this project "The Mukilteo Gem". Our client, a cook and baker, did not like her existing kitchen. The main points of issue were short runs of available counter tops, lack of storage and shortage of light. So, we were called in to implement some big, bold ideas into a small footprint kitchen with big potential. We completely changed the layout of the room by creating a tall, built-in storage wall and a continuous u-shape counter top. Early in the project, we took inventory of every item our clients wanted to store in the kitchen and ensured that every spoon, gadget, or bowl would have a dedicated "home" in their new kitchen. The finishes were meticulously selected to ensure continuity throughout the house. We also played with the color scheme to achieve a bold yet natural feel.This kitchen is a prime example of how color can be used to both make a statement and project peace and balance simultaneously. While busy at work on our client's kitchen improvement, we also updated the entry and gave the homeowner a modern laundry room with triple the storage space they originally had. End result: ecstatic clients and a very happy design team. That's what we call a big success! John Granen.

1852 Fort Greene Townhouse

Full gut renovation and facade restoration of an historic 1850s wood-frame townhouse. The current owners found the building as a decaying, vacant SRO (single room occupancy) dwelling with approximately 9 rooming units. The building has been converted to a two-family house with an owner’s triplex over a garden-level rental. Due to the fact that the very little of the existing structure was serviceable and the change of occupancy necessitated major layout changes, nC2 was able to propose an especially creative and unconventional design for the triplex. This design centers around a continuous 2-run stair which connects the main living space on the parlor level to a family room on the second floor and, finally, to a studio space on the third, thus linking all of the public and semi-public spaces with a single architectural element. This scheme is further enhanced through the use of a wood-slat screen wall which functions as a guardrail for the stair as well as a light-filtering element tying all of the floors together, as well its culmination in a 5’ x 25’ skylight.

Peony White and blue painted cabinets from Grabill Cabinets in their Madison Square door style set a nautical tone in the kitchen. A paneled and mirrored refrigerator is a focal point in the design inviting light into the back corner of the kitchen. Chrome accents continue the sparkle throughout the space.

TENNESSEE RIVER HOUSE A successful businessman sold his company, and as part of the deal, was required to move to Knoxville, Tennessee. Having long been used to lake living in his native Alabama, he and his wife wanted to find a spot that would allow them to continue their life long love of being close to the water. They located such a site on the Tennessee River in a place appropriately called “Lake Loudon”. The rolling pasture-like site had great water access and views, and few trees creating a wide open kind of scenery. They hoped to make a place for their grown children to return to them with their grandchildren. The design engages and embeds the house into the hillside to become part of the landscape rather than sit in the middle of the field. The house was rotated slightly away from a straight on view of the river to shield from western sun, in favor of the northern exposure which opened up longer views of the Tennessee River, also allowing for more liberal use of windows in the main living space.

This home was designed for a family who wanted the main living area to be a space for their family to get together and chat instead of watching TV! The wall of sliding doors by Western Window Systems opens the space to the outdoors and connects with views of the Texas Hill Country. With two teen daughters, a one bathroom house isn’t going to cut it. In order to keep the peace, our clients tore down an existing house in Richmond, BC to build a dream home suitable for a growing family. The plan. To keep the business on the main floor, complete with gym and media room, and have the bedrooms on the upper floor to retreat to for moments of tranquility. Designed in an Arts and Crafts manner, the home’s facade and interior impeccably flow together. Most of the rooms have craftsman style custom millwork designed for continuity. The highlight of the main floor is the dining room with a ridge skylight where ship-lap and exposed beams are used as finishing touches. Large windows were installed throughout to maximize light and two covered outdoor patios built for extra square footage. The kitchen overlooks the great room and comes with a separate wok kitchen. You can never have too many kitchens! The upper floor was designed with a Jack and Jill bathroom for the girls and a fourth bedroom with en-suite for one of them to move to when the need presents itself. Mom and dad thought things through and kept their master bedroom and en-suite on the opposite side of the floor. With such a well thought out floor plan, this home is sure to please for years to come.
