DHD Crosby Street Loft in SOHO, NYC The Crosby Street Loft building is located on a cobblestone block in the Soho Cast Iron Historic District. Built in 1882, it was formerly a department store, and converted in 2001 to a 10-unit loft condominium. Our renovation of a second floor loft retains and celebrates many of the original details, including generous, open spaces, 14 foot plus ceiling heights, Corinthian-style columns, and a continuous 120 foot exposed brick wall with integrated archways. The design was a collaborative process, integrating elements discovered on the client’s world travels. Scott and Janet of Elgin have had four design to build renovations with Advance Design over the last decade. We got the chance to sit down and talk with Janet about her experience working with Advance Design on so many different areas of her home. Starting with her kitchen in 2009, Janet proclaimed, “The reason we kept coming back is because our first [renovation] went so extremely well, exceeding all of my expectations.” Since their kitchen renovation with Advance Design ten years ago, Scott and Janet have also worked with Advance to remodel their master bedroom, their power room, a wet bar, and most recently their master bath. Having renovated practically every major room in the house with the team, we asked Janet what made her experience with Advance Design so special. “We went with Advance Design because we trusted them so much more, their experience, and everything that they brought. We were confident they were giving us what we wanted for the money we were spending.” For their most recent renovation, Scott and Janet clearly knew what to expect going into their master bath renovation. They were familiar with Advance’s step by step design process that epitomizes the “Common Sense Remodeling” philosophy applied in every project Advance creates. After once again experiencing the careful budgeting analysis, the pointed design meetings, and the clear documentation that leads up the a thoroughly managed installation, Janet’s simple summary of their experience is this; “The word I would use to describe the process is – collaboration!” Working closely with Advance Design kitchen designer Michelle Lecinski, together they were able to develop a new master bath design that not only worked with their investment goal, but also made sense for their lifestyle. “Oh Michelle, my designer! I connected with her immediately. She spent time getting to know us, our lifestyle, even the setting of our house.” The threesome had a great experience designing and producing yet another successful project together. When it came to their new project plans, Scott and Janet were interested in creating a relaxing “spa-like” experience in their master bath. One of the many ideas Michelle introduced during the design process was installing a Kohler Alteo series showerhead for a rain-like shower experience. This designer showerhead, mixed with the warm ambiance of the lighting and pebble accent running throughout the shower make for what Janet calls a “luxury spa essence”. From the oversized glass sliding door to the recessed niche for accessories, each special detail was considered and implemented intentionally so as to create the maximumly optimized use of the compact space. Not only was this transformation one of beauty and luxury, but special attention was given to every way possible to provide additional storage to maximize the functionality of the bath area as a whole. Once design was complete and the bath construction project began in their home, making sure everything happened efficiently and on schedule became new priority number one. “Having a project manager made an enormous difference,” Janet said, “It was so worth it to hire professionals that knew exactly what they were doing. After a devastating fire destroyed this Woodinville, Washington home, the homeowners faced the unimaginable task of rebuilding their lives and their house from the ground up. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the home itself could not be saved. Photography by Caryn B. Davis Located in the Cornfield Point area of Old Saybrook along Long Island Sound, this project brought a classic, yet forgotten beach house back to life. Through a little detective work and some creative ingenuity, we restored and enhanced the exterior to it’s former glory and transformed the interior to a highly efficient and functional home all the while uplifting its quaint cottage charm. On the exterior, we recreated a wonderful, airy front porch with cozy bench seats that look out to the water. The white cedar shingle siding is pre-bleached with a subtle flair at the bottom and a delicate break at mid-elevation. The asphalt shingles are not only beautifully matched with the siding, but offer superior reflective qualities to dissipate the heat of the summer sun. On the interior, we joined the front seasonal porch with the family room to form a larger, open living and dining space with paneled walls and ceilings anchored by the original round stone fireplace. In the rear, we carefully crafted a galley kitchen and laundry space with an adjacent first floor master suite. The diminutive house and property posed multiple practical and regulatory challenges which were overcome by a strong team effort, due diligence, and a commitment to the process. John R. After a devastating fire destroyed this Woodinville, Washington home, the homeowners faced the unimaginable task of rebuilding their lives and their house from the ground up. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the home itself could not be saved. Cutuli Homes had the privilege of walking alongside the homeowners through the rebuilding process—helping transform a heartbreaking loss into an opportunity to create a completely new home designed for the way they wanted to live today. Rather than simply recreate the dated house that had been lost, the homeowners chose to move forward. Working closely together, we created a home that feels modern, elegant, warm and distinctly Pacific Northwest—a place that acknowledges what came before while giving the family something beautiful to come home to again. The new open-concept kitchen and family room became the heart of the rebuilt home. A dramatic vaulted ceiling with dark-stained wood beams brings warmth and architectural definition to the light-filled space. The kitchen combines crisp white custom cabinetry, black accents, stainless-steel appliances, dark countertops, a generous contrasting island and contemporary pendant lighting. Large windows bring the surrounding Woodinville landscape into the home and fill the kitchen with natural light. The adjoining family room continues the home's understated Northwest aesthetic. A beautifully detailed fireplace creates a natural focal point, while the vaulted ceiling and exposed beams give the room a sense of scale without sacrificing warmth. The open relationship between the kitchen and living spaces was designed for everyday family life as well as entertaining. The bathrooms were given the same careful attention to craftsmanship and materials. Custom shaker-style cabinetry, stone countertops, patterned tile, soft gray finishes, oversized mirrors, black hardware and beautifully tiled tub and shower surrounds create spaces that feel sophisticated yet comfortable. Clean lines and a restrained palette give the bathrooms a quiet, spa-like quality that complements the rest of the home. Throughout the rebuilding process, our goal went far beyond constructing a new house. Losing a home to fire is deeply personal, and rebuilding requires countless decisions at a time when homeowners are already navigating an extraordinarily difficult experience. Cutuli Homes worked closely with the family throughout the process, helping guide the construction and turn their ideas for a fresh beginning into a home that could once again feel like theirs. The finished residence is not simply a replacement for what was lost. It represents a new chapter: a dated home transformed into a thoughtfully designed custom residence filled with light, craftsmanship and warmth. From ashes came an opportunity to create something beautiful—and, we hope, a little joy after tragedy. DHD Crosby Street Loft in SOHO, NYC The Crosby Street Loft building is located on a cobblestone block in the Soho Cast Iron Historic District. Built in 1882, it was formerly a department store, and converted in 2001 to a 10-unit loft condominium. Our renovation of a second floor loft retains and celebrates many of the original details, including generous, open spaces, 14 foot plus ceiling heights, Corinthian-style columns, and a continuous 120 foot exposed brick wall with integrated archways. The design was a collaborative process, integrating elements discovered on the client’s world travels.
