Perfect for a young family, this historic home in historic West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles features a garden with fragrant herbs, fruit trees and bird and butterfly-friendly plants.

From the front entry, this view captures the layered composition of the redesigned front yard. In the foreground, newly planted shrubs and perennials are set in dark mulch, ready to grow and bring fullness to the space. The lawn and softly contoured grass mound sit just beyond, adding shape and movement to the landscape. Framing it all is the curved retaining wall, close enough to appreciate its elegant form and mix of creamy stone and smooth beige cap. The combination of plantings, texture, and structure brings new life and interest to what was once a flat, plain yard.

The front yard at phase one. Only part of the existing landscape was removed the first year and the coral bark maple was planted. The homeowner didn't want an entirely young landscape all an once. The second year introduced the front row perennials, and the nandina was removed. Jane Mathews, designer

Blush Pink nandina is an exciting new version of the old standby Nandina ‘Firepower.’ Stunning pink new growth sets Blush Pink apart from its rivals. The pink color glows throughout the growing season leading up to a spectacular fall and winter display of bright pink and red foliage.
