The bathroom was a complete gut, and we were able to keep the design fee fairly minimal by using the same materials from the client’s master bathroom in new and creative ways. None of the plumbing or electrical elements needed to move, so that helped keep costs low as well. As the bathroom is rather small, we had to think outside of the box for creating display areas, which is how we decided to use the floating shelves to display decorations and give the bathroom a more inviting feel. The tile in the bathroom is a marble-look porcelain, which allows for easy cleaning and maintenance. A very unique element of this bathroom is the barn-door style glass shower door. The shower also features small corner shelves to store toiletries as needed. I placed LED lighting throughout the bathroom and added a frameless beveled edge mirror to help keep the room as minimal as possible. With a white under-mount sink and a leather- finished countertop, the vanity is clean and simple while still remaining stylish and modern. I integrated custom tile work throughout the shower and vanity to effectively tie the design of the bathroom together and add a modern flair to a clean, bright, and minimal space.

This apartment is located on the rooftop of a renovated tobacco warehouse in downtown richmond. The home was furnished to emphasize and take advantage of the panoramic views of the city. My clients downsized from 4K square feet and needed to pack a lifetime of their favorites into 900 square feet. Artwork, family photos and collections are floor to ceiling in an artful and whimsical way. Traditional family heirlooms are blended with the industrial decor. Furniture was designed and made custom to make the best of the views. The I-Beams were creatively used to display old license plates and other cherished pieces of the homeowners history.

This project represents the evolution of a 10 acre space over more than three decades. It began with the pool and space around it. As the vegetable garden grew, the orchard was established and the display gardens blossomed. The prairie was restored and a kitchen was added to complete the space. This creative transitional space was transformed from a very dated layout that did not function well for our homeowners - who enjoy cooking for both their family and friends. They found themselves cooking on a 30" by 36" tiny island in an area that had much more potential. A completely new floor plan was in order. An unnecessary hallway was removed to create additional space and a new traffic pattern. New doorways were created for access from the garage and to the laundry. Just a couple of highlights in this all Thermador appliance professional kitchen are the 10 ft island with two dishwashers (also note the heated tile area on the functional side of the island), double floor to ceiling pull-out pantries flanking the refrigerator, stylish soffited area at the range complete with burnished steel, niches and shelving for storage. Part of an extensive home remodel, this kitchen design was born of one man’s love of all things Harley Davidson. Color inspiration came from the client’s own cherished bike which was a stunning combination of matte black and brushed steel. The client’s wish was to have a large open area in which he could “be one with his guests” when hosting large gatherings. Cabinets, hardware and appliances all in black allow the focus to be on the beauty of the larger architectural elements as a whole. Included along the main storage wall is a hidden 42” refrigerator, dual pull-out pantries, and extra wide drawers below a pair of upper cabinets with matte black glass fold-up doors that open & close automatically via servo-drive technology. The new island - which measures just shy of 16 ½ feet! - is a true central point around which all action revolves. Wide walkways on either side provide ease of flow for multiple sous chefs and guests alike. A textured cypress soffit above the island was designed to house the modern hood and also create a feeling of unity as it is the same size as the island below. Textured cypress wood also wraps matte black cabinetry and lines the main wall, changing grain direction to provide visual interest. The 5’ Galley Workstation is a multi-functional marvel, easily transitioning from prep station to serving surface to clean-up with the addition of its built-in accessories. Placing an undercounter wine refrigerator on the back side of the island makes it easy for guests at the bar to help themselves. Close to the bar seating area, a 42” flat screen tv fits perfectly flush in the wall, practically disappearing when not in use. Unique details include a large display cabinet with a metal framed front & side crafted out of steel by a local artisan. The glass is 2-way mirror so when the interior light is off, the treasure is concealed inside. The interior is painted in the trademark Harley orange. Above a modern dining table, a one-of-a-kind chandelier was created from 3 bike helmets, painted in Harley orange by a local automobile detail shop. The interiors are finished in metallic silver for extra glow. Adjacent to the Kitchen, and initially deceiving in its simplicity, the main tv wall was quite complex and challenging to realize. It has a convex curve from left to right and slopes back from floor to ceiling. The interior hollow space created room for a shallow tv niche on top and partially recessed deep media storage cabinets below. The planning and framing involved to create the proper compound miter connections required extra diligence from the designers and builder, but the finished product was worth the effort! Open bookshelves create a cozy atmosphere in the small dining room and a collection of antique blue and white Canton china adds color to an otherwise neutral room. The dining table was created from a metal pedestal base from a restaurant supply source with a 42" diameter plywood top. An alternate 54" diameter plywood with its own skirt will allow seating for six guests. A home office off the kitchen can be concealed with a pocket door. Gray-painted maple Wood-Mode cabinetry complements the kitchen finishes but makes the space unique. **Project Overview** A small, quiet, efficient office space for one that is perfect for sorting mail and paying bills. Though small it has a great deal of natural light and views out the front of the house of the lush landscaping and wildlife. A pocket door makes the office disappear when it's time to entertain. **What Makes This Project Unique?** Small yet incredibly functional, this desk space is a comfortable, quiet place to catch up on home management tasks. Filled with natural light and offering a view of lush landscaping, the compact space is light and airy. To keep it from feeling cramped or crowded, we complemented warm gray-painted maple cabinetry with light countertops and tile. Taller ceilings allow ample storage, including full-height open storage, to manage all of the papers, files and extras that find their way into the home. **Design Challenges** While the office was intentionally designed into a tiny nook off the kitchen and pantry, we didn't want it to feel small for the people using it. By keeping the color palette light, taking cabinetry to the ceiling, incorporating open storage and maximizing natural light, the space feels cozy, and larger than it actually is.
