Inspiration for a transitional beige three-story exterior home remodel in New York

Designed and built by Terramor Homes in Raleigh, NC. We also incorporated a comfortably sized guest bedroom suite that adjoins the bathroom that was designed to be used for all guests in the basement area. Another important objective in this basement area, is the fact that the door to the flagstone patio outside, then leads you through the back yard and back to the greenway and river behind. This was the main reason for this home site being chosen- for full enjoyment of all that the river and greenway have to offer- from paddle boarding, tubing, swimming, fishing to running and biking on the greenway. It was imperative that a space be created for the return of any of those trips. A tile floored mudroom was created from that entrance to include a sink for quick washing of hands, cabinets for extra supplies that could be needed, hooks for hanging towels and direct access to the bathroom with walk in shower for muddy boots, wet swim suits and any other items or creatures that may find their way back in. The décor was also kept simple and in keeping with the theme. Walls in horizontal planking, an old fashioned wall mounted sink and restoration looking barn style light fixtures both above the sink and on the ceiling complete the look we wanted to achieve. A four room master suite renovation in a 1930's Shaker Heights Tudor gem. The clients' fondness for soothing blue and cream tones permeate the space from warm Durango travertine in the bathroom to the calming aqua and gold wallpaper in the sitting room. All of the natural wood trim was painted Benjamin Moore's White Dove creating a much airier feel. Songbirds, another owner request, play a big role in the suite; featured on the hand painted bedroom walls, the custom vanity sink and furniture details, these feathered creatures add a sense of whimsy and natural beauty. The owners adore their traditional home's unique details and asked us to preserve the shaving sink, a 1930's era relic, now resting in a custom curved vanity under a television disguised in the mirror. It is gratifying to compare the before and after pictures. Renovating old homes is not easy, but the painstaking work of correcting sloping floors, outdated electrical systems, correcting plaster damage, etc. is overshadowed by the gratification of knowing this home has been lovingly restored and will grace the neighborhood for decades to come.

For this “pond-less” waterfall and stream, the water required to keep it topped off and refreshed is harvested from the roof of the clients’ house. “Such a water feature is run entirely without using city water,” says Dave Stockwell, owner of Deck and Patio. “It acts as a ‘green’ maintenance-free source that operates daily March through December. “And any excess harvested rainwater can be used for irrigation of the property.” Environmentally-Friendly Backyard Ponds Backyard ponds with waterfalls and streams can also be created in eco-friendly ways so they not only do no harm, but also help improve the environment. Fish ponds, for example, naturally attract — and provide a haven for — other wildlife that children (as well as adults) love: frogs, salamanders, song birds, etc. Of course, all these creatures are delightful to watch and listen to. More than that, their presence offer natural ways to a healthier environment. Our customer Lenore bought an antique French Henry II buffet in the Hunting style for her dining area with rustic exposed logs in her mountain cabin / cottage. The 1920 antique buffet is heavily carved with a scene of a hunter and stag on the upper cabinet. The lower cabinet doors are carved with fantastic dragon-like creatures. Lenore also bought a set of French Renaissance vintage dining chairs, dating to 1930. The carved oak vintage chairs are upholstered in red and cream brocade to add a splash of color to the light and airy open dining area.

This 400 s.f. studio apartment in NYC’s Greenwich Village serves as a pied-a-terre for clients whose primary residence is on the West Coast. Although the clients do not reside here full-time, this tiny space accommodates all the creature comforts of home. Bleached hardwood floors, crisp white walls, and high ceilings are the backdrop to a custom blackened steel and glass partition, layered with raw silk sheer draperies, to create a private sleeping area, replete with custom built-in closets. Simple headboard and crisp linens are balanced with a lightly-metallic glazed duvet and a vintage textile pillow. The living space boasts a custom Belgian linen sectional sofa that pulls out into a full-size bed for the couple’s young children who sometimes accompany them. Efficient and inexpensive dining furniture sits comfortably in the main living space and lends clean, Scandinavian functionality for sharing meals. The sculptural handrafted metal ceiling mobile offsets the architecture’s clean lines, defining the space while accentuating the tall ceilings. The kitchenette combines custom cool grey lacquered cabinets with brass fittings, white beveled subway tile, and a warm brushed brass backsplash; an antique Boucherouite runner and textural woven stools that pull up to the kitchen’s coffee counter puntuate the clean palette with warmth and the human scale. The under-counter freezer and refrigerator, along with the 18” dishwasher, are all panelled to match the cabinets, and open shelving to the ceiling maximizes the feeling of the space’s volume. The entry closet doubles as home for a combination washer/dryer unit. The custom bathroom vanity, with open brass legs sitting against floor-to-ceiling marble subway tile, boasts a honed gray marble countertop, with an undermount sink offset to maximize precious counter space and highlight a pendant light. A tall narrow cabinet combines closed and open storage, and a recessed mirrored medicine cabinet conceals additional necessaries. The stand-up shower is kept minimal, with simple white beveled subway tile and frameless glass doors, and is large enough to host a teak and stainless bench for comfort; black sink and bath fittings ground the otherwise light palette. What had been a generic studio apartment became a rich landscape for living.
