At an elevation of 8750' and winter design temperature of -16 degrees F, the historic mountain mining town of Telluride, Colorado can be cold! Beyond Efficiency was brought on board for its cold-climate expertise and provided buiding envelope advising and detailing, mechanical engineering, and guidance in surpassing Telluride's energy efficiency requirements for the new single-family home. The project was completed in the fall of 2016. Our detailed plan review of preliminary building envelope details services identified thermal bridging issues at basement wall intersections with the slab and raised floor. Simple modifications significantly reduced heat loss and improved constructability. We also advised on the above-ground framed wall assemby, which resulted in a 2x6 wood-framed wall insulated with dense-pack cellulose, ZIP System sheathing (which doubles as the airtight weather-resistant barrier (WRB)), 2" continuous rigid mineral wool insulation, 1x4 furring, and fiber cement lap siding. The wall assembly reduces heat loss 20% compared to Telluride's minimum requirement, and the R-52 roof assembly is 35% better than code. Alpen high-solar gain fiberglass windows, which include a low-E film suspended between the two panes of glass, reduce window-related heat losses by 50% compared to code and round out the high-performance envelope package. The final mechanical system design includes heat-recovery ventilation and in-floor radiant hydronic heating provided from a 95% AFUE high-efficiency condensing gas boiler. Utility bills from the first year of occupancy demonstrate the project's highly efficient design: the household's total site energy is about 20% less than that of the average Colorado residence, an impressive feat given that Telluride is in a significantly more extreme climate zone than a majority of Colorado's population. Our clients wanted to build an outdoor living area complete with fire feature, dining area, and TV entertainment. This project was built to look original-to-the-home and provide a large seating area with plenty of shade for enjoyment. The covered patio shades the majority of the backyard patio area, leaving the fire feature area open to star gazing in the evening. Sparkling and shimmering, decorative glass is the perfect medium for this lovely fire feature! The polished capstone along the perimeter of the fire feature provides additional seating for those captivated by its beauty and warmth. Tongue and Groove ceiling is a beautiful enhancement to this patio cover. An outdoor TV is wired in the living area of this patio cover, bringing the entertainment outdoors! A large farm-style dining table is perfectly placed in the middle of patio for an outdoor dining experience. Needless to say, the space underneath this patio cover is wonderfully utilized. Our design vision for the pieces we designed and built for Prairie Architecture’s new space started with the reception desk. As the main focal point for their customers and clients when they are greeted we had to design a stately visual piece! The main feature of the reception desk utilized reclaimed Elm which was specified early on in the project paying homage to Winnipeg’s boulevards. Part of our overall concept was incorporating angular lines within the designs of the steel work. The folded steel helped create large flat planes presenting a beautiful contrast to the figured warm character of the Elm. The use of steel within our designs were to connect to PAI’s existing steel work tables as well as the steel in the heritage building. Details: 11′-10″ long x 3′ wide with 1-1/2″ solid Elm tops. All Weather teamed up with the Property Brothers and Darren Criss on this week’s episode of HGTV’s hit series Celebrity IOU. In the Darren Criss Makes Over his Managers Garage episode. the 34-year old actor, singer and songwriter trades in his guitar for a sledgehammer to help transform his decade-long best friend and manager Ricky’s old, detached garage into a beautiful, dedicated home office space with a spa like bathroom, kitchenette and living area. Darren wanted to express his heartfelt gratitude and thank Ricky, who he credits with helping to launch his career, for his years of support. “Ricky is easily one of the best things that has ever happened to me in my entire life,” added the Emmy and Golden Globe winning multi talented star. “He has invested so much of himself into making my dreams come true. This is a small token of all my appreciation for everything he’s done.” In addition to the turning the garage into a much needed five star home office/flex space that can also be utilized as an in law suite, the Property Brothers give Ricky’s lackluster backyard a major upgrade including an outdoor kitchen and hot tub. the new kitchen . . . Sometimes, in remodel designs, it is best to keep things simple. Do small things to affect utility, flow and aesthetics. For this mid-century modern, for all their noted openness, the kitchen was closed off from the public, living areas. Hard to entertain to a wall. This we fixed. The other big flaw was the flow. While there was no way to economically change the path of travel through the kitchen. Nudging here and there could at least reduce the disruption at the core kitchen work areas.
