Dramatic plant textures, modern hardscaping and sharp angles enhanced this mid-century modern bungalow. Soft plants were chosen to contrast with the sharp angles of the pathways and hard edges of the MCM home, while providing all-season interest. Horizontal privacy screens wrap the front porch and create intimate garden spaces – some visible only from the street and some visible only from inside the home. The front yard is relatively small in size, but full of colorful texture.

The formality of the front entry is deconstructed on the walking paths by echoing the pavers as an edging and crushed gravel as the main path surface. Perennials and woody shrubs alike flank the walk, spilling over the border, enhancing the charm of the garden. Photography by: Joe Hollowell

Natural stone slab steps transition up the slope, anchored by boulder retaining walls and softened with low-maintenance plantings. River rock mulch and strategic drainage maintain durability while keeping a clean Colorado aesthetic. A combination of wide risers and flagstone steppers creates a comfortable, visually appealing path between outdoor spaces.

A metal arbor serves as the entry point to this English strolling and cutting garden on one side, edibles on the other. Flowers help draw the pollinators to the edible fruits and vegetables. An unused portion of the driveway was transformed into a gracious walkway using pea gravel with large thermal bluestone steppers. The surrounding area is designed as a potager garden planted with lavender and herbs. Weathering steel was added to cover the existing wall providing an requested update with more textural interest.
