Once they began converting their new "hobby" grapes into wine, they soon realized they needed a place to "age" their labors and a place to then enjoy them. They decided to design such a place within the confines of their home where they could entertain family and friends. The structure was modified to allow storage of more than 200 individual bottles, cases, and magnum size bottles. A cask room was added as was a well-appointed tasting room. The storage area is separated from the tasting and social area by a tempered glass doors and windows. The space to be converted was a challenge. No surface was plumb or level, therefore, the remodel involved interior walls, new floors and ceilings. Until these issues were addressed, the beautiful cabinet work, and a complete temperature and humidity control system to store, maintain, and enjoy the wine could not be started. The floors had to be floated out and chases with faux finishes provided for HVAC and electrical. Lighting in the tasting room is provided by a series of recessed and puck lights. The bar/counter area is highlighted by a custom, Tiffany style chandelier. Enough space was left in front of the bar to accommodate two serving tables for food and snacks, with plenty of room to move about the space. Discreetly hidden behind the bar is a large capacity cooler that can chill several bottles at once. The bar is capped with eight lineal feet of Calcutta Gold Marble and sports a brass foot rail. The bar has grape panels between Acanthus Corbels and the bottle storage cabinet areas are a unique blend of Acanthus overlays under precisely cut and mitered grape design crown molding over and around a cleverly designed bottle storage system. Traffic flow is achieved through the multiple points of entry through any of three pairs of 6' custom double doors which, when weather permitting, can remain open while entertaining. The host and hostess can attend food and beverage service from behind and around the bar through a separate doorway. The temperature controlled cask storage area is large enough for the clients' current needs, and can accommodate a larger number of casks should the need arise. The floor and walls of the cask room are designed for easy maintenance.. Both rooms are delightfully decorated with earthen tone faux finishes on walls, ceilings and floors reminiscent of a nonspecific European wine making region. This effect is extended to the soffits in the tasting room. A unique wine racking system is easily stored, providing even greater ability to maintain and move about the storage area.

20th Street in Brooklyn is a new townhouse building housing 5 luxury apartments each with access to a back garden, balcony and rooftop terrace. Currently under construction (completion in summer of 2023). — The proposal reinterprets city living - maximizing the smaller spaces with cohesive architecture and a more expansive interior living experience. The use of floor to ceiling windows to allow light to flood in and a connection to the outdoors provides a modern take on city living. The original scope of the project was limited to supporting in the redesign of the backyard and gardens and helping to define finishes. However, after demonstrating opportunities for creating a greater sense of luxury by expanding the existing interior floor plans - a whole-sale redesign of each apartment was committed to. A considered approach sees the new settle in within its older surrounding - giving context to a modern way of city living. The use of natural materials - such as stained or natural oak, honed limestone and marble - in crafted millwork moments allow for a timeless aesthetic that ages gracefully over time - calm simplicity and refined luxury. Kitchens were designed in collaboration with Reform CPH.

Design for a couple who wanted to down-size from their current residence. They originally requested a 'Modern Farm house' style that evolved into a more modern design with the original materials the client wanted to use. The home is very open, designed for a couple who can age with the home with larger hallways and multi-use spaces. Wrapping around a central courtyard the main hallway has built-in storage and seating. Its light is transferred to the other spaces thru a diffused polygal clerestory. Staging this 4-bedroom house, for sale came with some challenges. Walls and ceilings painted the same color were making the house feel dark and were not showcasing the architectural features of the house. I found a new appreciation for Navajo White and Alabaster White on this project. The initial plan was to paint a few key rooms, but as the project unfolded, it was clear the new paint was making the rest of the 18-year-old house show its age. The new wall and ceiling colors helped show off the natural wood trim and frame the beautiful exterior views. Queue the elk and cross-country skiers on the snow-covered bike path. The next challenge was furniture. A mixed variety of furniture styles were a distraction to the eye. This drew focus away from highlighting the house’s large spaces. We edited out all of the distracting and mismatched pieces then decided to stage with empty bedrooms rather than spend money on bedding and accessories. Next, space planning. During the initial build of the home a 900-foot bonus room was created over the 3-car garage. It was a huge multipurpose space that was underutilized for day to day living. The family room furniture was moved out of a cozy first floor guest bedroom and into the bonus space. The new family room now had purpose and allowed the first-floor guest room to be staged as a 4th bedroom. Finally, lighting and art. Dining, kitchen and living area lighting was updated from traditional craftsman fixtures to more current fixtures with a mix of bronze and clear glass. Eddison, filament style bulbs made the fixtures interesting and added warmth. Several track lights were replaced with can lights including the one highlighting new art over the fireplace. Simple things like changing outlets, switches and covers cleaned up the walls. Carpet stretching and cleaning brought a fresh clean look to the carpeted areas while cleaning and buffing the wood and concrete floors brought back their original shine.

This bathroom was remodeled with the purpose of being able for the homeowners to age in place. The original bathroom had a small enclosed shower, an oversized, underused whirlpool, short vanity, and limited storage. We took the tub space and created a large walk in shower, with no curb! We also fully fitted this shower with grab bars at the entry, in the shower, and the slide bar on the handheld is an actual grab bar! Backing was also added behind the tile for a seat to be mounted in the future. Where the shower used to be is now a large linen closet with large drawers for storage. The vanity is the existing vanity, but we raised it up to today's current taller vanity height, added a new top, undermount sinks & faucets. Our repeat clients, Mark, Kim, and their school-age son, David, have been making this home their own for nearly a decade.
