Inspiration for a bedroom remodel in Los Angeles

If you fear that a variety of materials and colors will look “too busy”, then consider this masterpiece of mixed elements that created a warm, rich, and layered one-of-a kind environment. Custom cabinetry combines frameless full overlay with flush inset construction; doors are both Shaker and slab. While most of the perimeter is lightly-stained rift cut white oak, the island and paneled backsplashes are Farrow & Ball’s “School House White”; the hutch is their pale blue-gray “Pigeon”. Two styles of Honey Bronze hardware comingle with the hutch’s simple polished nickel knobs. Open hutch shelves are rift cut oak; their gallery rails are brass. Faucets are polished nickel and the island pendant is aged iron. Even the countertops display variation: the sink wall, cooking nook and hutch are “Bianco Extra” marble, 2” thick with waterfall ends at the sink; 2” thick slabs with standard overhangs at the rangetop; and a thinner slab with traditional ogee edges on the hutch. Offering contrast on the island is 2” thick honed and leathered “Jet Mist” granite. The charming vent hood incorporates a scalloped detail and more oak. Slender furniture legs enhance the hutch, while 4” brass cuffs on the square island legs add sparkle. This project was designed in collaboration with Andy Toth and Leitenberger Design Group. We designed a customized accessible vanity for our client based on their current and future needs. The tall cabinet is accessible when standing and the draws are accessible if in a wheel chair.

Customer's of mine bought their three year old son a race car toddler bed to support his current interests for Christmas. Before that his room was themed for nursery, designed with tree and monkey which is great for infants, but would no longer fit their new ideas. The homeowners also requested a time effective solution so we collaborated with one another and came up with the following Plan: I used the remaining paint from the original application to cover over the old work. This was the largest time savor in that the crib would be the only piece of furniture required to be moved. Prior to we agreed that subtlety was something we wanted to hold onto as much as possible. So I painted a running checker border, using only the accent color to the car and the original wall color rather than introducing an additional color which would have resulted in a louder feel. I designed the drag light as a teaching friendly tool. Building it with triangles at its base, rectangles within and circle silhouettes so that the toddler can easily identify with it's shapes. Using his current age I assigned him his first racing number and closed out this one day transformation with the finish line flag.

Susan and Doug loved their two-story home set on a lovely large and secluded wooded lot in a quiet and centrally located neighborhood in Apex, NC. They decided that they would retire in the home, but were aware of their need to transition to a first-floor fully accessible living environment as they aged so that they could remain in their home as long as possible. Our solution was to design and build a first-floor Master Bedroom suite that flows seamlessly into the other living areas on their first floor, and also serves to bring more of the “outdoors in”, allowing them to enjoy more of their lovely large wooded back yard and gardens.
