North-facing outdoor spaces are typically shady, but that doesn't mean you can't get anything to grow there. Here, a north-facing front yard bursts with spring color, with Japanese Maples, Azaleas and spring-flowering daffodils. In the forefront, summer-blooming Globe Alliums and Shrub Roses, situated in a sunnier spot, will continue the colorful display when summer arrives.

Early spring in the gardens, the purple blooms of groundcover Vinca provide a wonderful carpet of color. Narcissus 'Pheasant Eye' are a welcome spring sight with lovely white blooms.

Ridges were extended in front and at sides to create gables, typical of the Cape Cod style. Contrast this with "before" picture. Cedar siding was extended into the new gable ends, so everything looks original.

Having such a large chunk of land to garden allows for prolific massings of perennials and the space to compliment them with pairings of contrasting plants.
