The key design driver for the project was to create a simple but contemporary extension that responded to the existing dramatic topography in the property’s rear garden. The concept was to provide a single elegant form, cantilevering out into the tree canopies and over the landscape. Conceived as a house within the tree canopies the extension is clad in sweet chestnut which enhances the relationship to the surrounding mature trees. Large sliding glass panels link the inside spaces to its unique environment. Internally the design successfully resolves the Client’s brief to provide an open plan and fluid layout, that subtly defines distinct living and dining areas. The scheme was completed in April 2016

I took pause a couple of weeks ago to head out with my children to the edges of our meadow. We had a special task at hand that day, to collect milkweed seeds for my Aunt and Uncle’s cabin in the Catskills. It’s a place I’ve been visiting for decades and a place my children now visit. We simply refer to it as “The Cabin”. That afternoon we gathered milkweed pods and settled into the simple joy of watching the ethereal seeds travel on a puff of air. Seasons ago, my children began to make “wishes” on the seeds, inspired by their lightness and grace as they journeyed high into the clouds. In this spirit, we conjure our wishes each fall in hopes that they will take root and thrive next spring after our winter of inwardness has passed. I have the suspicion that many unclaimed wishes made their way into our basket that afternoon and are eagerly awaiting their new place at The Cabin.

A galley kitchen layout is as classic and efficient as it gets. Long narrow kitchen spaces that connect with other rooms are perfect candidates for this type of layout. With the sitting room beyond and the glass door to the back yard, this kitchen reads larger and becomes a true hub in the main level circulation pattern. Painted gray base cabinets anchor glass front white upper cabinets. Although a more recent trend, cabinets of different colors is an old and traditional look, originally established decades ago when farm kitchens were modified in stages often with cabinets of different colors or finishes. This is the home of an area pediatrician and her retired neurosurgeon husband near Augusta in the Belgrade Lakes Region of Maine. The home faces out on one of the largest lakes in the area. The 5,000 square foot house was built on the grounds of a former summer camp and features a soaring two-story great room, kitchen and dining area, a den with a panoramic view of the lake, four bedrooms and a second-floor “tower” office for the pediatrician. More than 8,000 square feet of Englert Series `1300 standing seam metal roof was used for the main house and adjacent garage. The color of the 24 gauge, 20 inch wide standing seam panel is patina green. The primary challenge during installation was the severe 16/12 pitch of the roof and the installation of metal around the dormers on the side of the house facing the lakefront. David Barker of Farmingdale, Maine was the general contractor. C.O. Beck & Sons of Waterville, Maine was the metal roofing company. Installed more than a decade ago, the color and finish of this 1 ½-inch mechanically seamed roof remains as fresh as the day it was installed, despite the harsh, cold winters of the region.
