Echoing the architecture, linear elements transform as the elevation changes around them. Retaining walls that start below grade gradually emerge into free-standing garden walls or planters, and concrete terraces that appear to sink into the ground at one end of the house switch to soaring above it at the other. At all elevations, steps, garden walls, and walks stretch out from the house and fade into the lawn, subtly stitching the house to the site.

Design ideas for a contemporary side yard decomposed granite landscaping in San Francisco.

This outdoor public prayer garden was thoughtfully designed as a peaceful space for reflection and gathering. The focal point of the park is a striking 12-foot cross, serving as a meaningful centerpiece for the garden. The space includes custom 10-foot benches and 6-foot tables, providing ample seating for prayer, fellowship, and small group gatherings.
The entire area is finished with decomposed granite, creating a natural, low-maintenance surface that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape while completing the park’s tranquil and welcoming atmosphere.

Faced with the challenge of maximizing every inch in this limited area, our goal was to reclaim and transform. The result: a thoughtful design featuring a custom fence for privacy and aesthetics, a space-saving bike shed, and a cozy bench surrounded by mosquito-repellent plants. Witness the metamorphosis of this once-overgrown haven into a harmonious blend of functionality and style—a transformed retreat where space is utilized to its fullest potential.

We decided to position the fire pit seating area in the only shady corner of the back yard. The flagstones surrounded by Dymondia groundcover lead you through the trellis soon to be covered with Bougainvillea vines into this cozy, colorful, outdoor 'room.' The owners chose comfortable swivel chairs and a fire table to relax and entertain in.

Great curb appeal, low maintenance, and cost effective was our marching orders on this project. We designed a nice and clean looking yard that has lots of Wow! factor and is easy to maintain. Our client wanted a secure walkway from front to back but one that is easy on the wallet. Utilizing man-made stone steps and retaining systems we were easily able to build that for them. We also added a cedar privacy screen under the walkout deck that is louvered so they can open or close it depending on the circumstances.
