A backdrop of beautiful mature trees sets a tranquil tone for this elegant pool near Stouffville. Its classic rectangular shape is uniquely interrupted by a gentle curve in the shallow end which echoes the shape of the curved raised wooden deck. The pool's soft grey Armourcoat interior contrasts beautifully with the surrounding flagstone coping and dry-laid deck, while at the deep end, a patio in architectural stamped concrete complements the beautiful post and beam shelter supported by a natural stone wall featuring arched openings and a fireplace. Our goal on this project was to make the main floor of this lovely early 20th century home in a popular Vancouver neighborhood work for a growing family of four. We opened up the space, both literally and aesthetically, with windows and skylights, an efficient layout, some carefully selected furniture pieces and a soft colour palette that lends a light and playful feel to the space. Our clients can hardly believe that their once small, dark, uncomfortable main floor has become a bright, functional and beautiful space where they can now comfortably host friends and hang out as a family. An extensively xeriscaped landscape plan for the entire lot includes a new system of berms designed to redirect floodwaters away from the house and to the creek in back. So as not to penetrate the berms at the street, an entirely new stepped entry element was created, with a large steel planter and stone walls that match the home’s exterior. A new drystack stone “arroyo” in front of the house acts as a backup flood control element, should an excessive amount of water ever penetrate the berms. An ipe’ and steel entry bridge spans the arroyo and provides pleasant access to the home’s glass and cypress front door. In order to provide shelter for arriving guests and shield the home’s entry from the blistering western sun, a new front porch structure was designed using wood posts comprised of four smaller individual posts bolted together. These in turn support a large glulam beam holding the fir roof structure, whose materials and detailing match the cover of the rear deck.

We removed a structural column in this dated, boring kitchen and designed and installed a new kitchen with amazing finishes, Beautiful laminated stone tops, and highly decorated cabinetry details. The hood is custom, and the backsplash is marble.

This maple stair with open rise carpet treads brings a warm and impressive feel to this home. The self-supported design alleviates the need for support posts under the landings leaving the view through the windows uncluttered. Grouped blanked spindles and mission posts add a simple linear texture to the staircase. The many posts tied together with angular lines showcase detail and craftsmanship.

This beautiful bar cabinet with burnt oak adjustable shelves is part of our Loft Shelving System. Our Loft posts in blackened gunmetal and fully machined brass fittings in our buffed brass finish mount from the top of our cabinet and tie back to the wall to support 8 shelves. Amuneal’s proprietary machined hardware clamps onto the posts so that the shelves can be easily adjusted at any time. The burnt oak shelves are milled in house from solid white oak to a thickness of 1.5” before being hand-finished using the traditional Shou Sugi Ban process of burning the wood. Once completed, the shelves are sealed with a protective coating that keeps that burnt finish from rubbing off. The combination of blackened steel posts, machined and patinated brass hardware and the charred oak shelves make this a stunning and sculptural shelving option for any space. Integrated bronze bottle stops and wine glass holders add detail and purpose. The lower portion of this bar system is a tall credenza in one of Amuneal’s new finishes, cerused chestnut. The credenza storage highlights the system’s flexibility with drawers, cabinets and glass fronted doors, all with Amuneal fully machined and full width drawer pulls. Behind the glass doors, are a series of pull-out wine trays, carved from solid oak, allowing both display and storage in this unit. This unit is fabricated in our Philadelphia-based furniture studio and can be customized with different metal and wood finishes as well as different shelf widths, sizes and configurations.

Starting with a truly open concept home led us to create this kitchen / dining / living area with a 70' long vault throughout. Decorative steel collar ties bring a distinctively decorative item to aid with structural support.

A kitchen remodel started with a big challenge. The homeowner wanted a more open usable space. The kitchen was cramped, dark and didn’t accommodate two people. The result is a beautiful kitchen that took clever space planning. There was a supporting wall in the way of their dreams of an open kitchen. The space was split into two small rooms. For various reasons putting in a supporting beam was not an option. This was a “make it work” challenge. The layout was key to making this kitchen function and also feel open. The wall was removed between the split rooms, but it was necessary to leave a post in place so frankly the ceiling wouldn’t collapse. Many scenarios were considered before the final plan went forward. The supporting post was united into the design. Between the post and the wall, an open cabinet was incorporated. The open shelves are perfect for displaying and quick access for the chef’s cookbooks.

Updated Spec Home: Foyer and Great Room
In our last post, we introduced you to my mom and sister’s Updated Spec Home; the Foyer and Great Room will be featured in this post.
Foyer
As you enter their home, to the right is a hall closet and a french door which leads to the Basement. To the left is a long wall which was perfect for an extra long console table in a rustic finish that served as a sofa table in their previous home. I love repositioning furniture, and by using this table in the entry, it makes it feel new.
Additionally, we placed a vibrant piece of art previously used in my sister’s Bedroom above the table. This piece not only sets the tone for our color palette, it also makes the kind of statement you want in your Foyer – Wow! We added accessories and an unique lamp to complete the space.
Great Room
In the Great Room which is open to the Foyer, we installed our inspiration artwork in the place of honor over the mantel. Since the piece was vertical, it did not take up enough space. I do not like a “fussy” mantel with lots of accessories so we found these two vases in a silver leaf finish. They were perfect because they were large enough, but not too deep. Accessorizing mantels can be tricky because the majority of them are not deep. We went to Jan’s Floral Design to add vibrant color and interesting textures to the vases.
The original mantel was too small and uninspired. Therefore, we had our contractor Brad Anderson built a new one based on a photo of a mantel we liked. The new mantel has lots of great detail and is the appropriate proportion for the fireplace. We replaced beige 12×12 ceramic tiles with gorgeous large pieces of smoked carrara marble for a striking fireplace surround. Check out this other mantel that we updated.
For furniture, we purchased a shorter sofa in a gray tweed fabric. Typically, two throw pillows come with a sofa.We added a fun fringe to the pillows that came with the sofa. I recommend ordering pillows that match your sofa fabric and layering with custom pillows that support your color palette. We added a patterned custom pillow and a striped throw.
Next, we got a small scale recliner in a yummy gray leather for my mom and a chair and ottoman in a small scale mint and gray geometric pattern for my sister. We added an accent chair in a fun small scale stripe to fill a corner and add additional seating – which is always a good thing.
Remember that this was a Spec Home so there were no built-ins. As a result, we needed a media cabinet for the television and some bookcases to display my mom’s decorative box collection and my sister’s collection of blown colored glass. This set from Ballard Designs fit the bill perfectly. The back is open and airy with nice detail. The wood finish also adds a richness to the space.
My mom needed a space for her computer, and this small writing desk fit the space perfectly.
Finally, for finishing touches, we added a patterned rug, cornice boards in a mint leaf fabric, and great lamps for ambient lighting. These two rooms are stunning, vibrant and livable. Can’t wait to show you more in our next post! Enjoy!
