Granit Architects + InteriorsWe are delighted to have completed the radical transformation of a tired detached property in South Croydon.
When they appointed Granit, our clients were living in the property which had previously been divided into a number of flats.
The historic sub-division had resulted in an extremely poor use of space with redundant staircases, kitchens and bathrooms throughout.
Our clients sought to reconfigure the property back into a single dwelling for his growing family.
Our client had an eye for design and was keen to balance contemporary design whilst maintaining as much of the character of the original house.
Maximising natural light, space and establishing a visual and physical connection were also key drivers for the design. Owing to the size of the property, it became apparent that reconfiguration rather than extension provided the solution to meet the brief.
A metal clad ‘intervention’ was introduced to the rear facade. This created a strong horizontal element creating a visual balance with the vertical nature of the three storey gable.
The metal cladding specified echoed the colour of the red brick string courses tying old with new. Slender frame sliding doors provide access and views of the large garden.
The central circulation space was transformed by the introduction of a double height glazed slot wrapping up the rear facade and onto the roof. This allows daylight to permeate into the heart of the otherwise dark deep floor plan. The staircase was reconfigured into a series of landings looking down over the main void space below and out towards the tree canopies at the rear of the garden.
The introduction of double pocket doors throughout the ground floor creates a series of interconnected spaces and the whitewashed Larch flooring flows seamlessly from room to room. A bold palette of colours and materials lends character and texture throughout the property.
The end result is a spacious yet cosy environment for the family to inhabit for years to come.

Home supportThe most effective way to remove pet pee from carpet
If you have a furry friend living with you, accidents are bound to happen. When dealing with pet pee or other pet stains on the carpet – urine, poop, or vomit – immediate action combined with deep cleaning can typically restore the carpet to pristine condition. Even if you don’t notice a pet pee until it has dried and set into the carpet, the stain can still be treated. You should never use harsh chemical cleaners that have a strong, caustic smell when cleaning pet stains on carpet. They rarely remove carpet odors from the fibers and might actually encourage pets to mark on the carpet again. To get rid of pet stains, try homemade cleaning products.
Tile Doctor LtdBath Stone is a material that we don’t often encounter. A variation of LimestoneCardiff was quite upset that her Bath Stone window sills had become so unsightly over the four-year period since her house was built, so much so that she contacted Tile Doctor to see if we could help.
While at Tile Doctor we most often work on tiled floors, patios and shower cubicles, I was more than happy to assist in this situation. I popped round to the property to carry out some initial cleaning tests on an inconspicuous area of one of the window sills.
I applied Tile Doctor Pro Clean, which is our high alkaline cleaner, since it’s a very versatile and reliable product, and is suitable for use on most kinds of natural stone. Some fantastic results were achieved quickly, with Pro Clean working efficiently to remove the green and black algae that I presumed came from the trees which were plentiful around the property.
With the test clean a success, we agreed a date to complete the job. I returned on the agreed date with a ladder to treat the rest of the sills using Pro Clean, including the one on the first floor window.
Before carrying out the work, I tested the stone for moisture and the readings were sky high. Therefore, I suggested to the customer not to seal the stone, but instead to maintain it using the same cleaning process as I had undertaken.
The outcome of my restoration was brilliant, so now when the customer feels that the sills need to be rejuvenated again, she can do so very easily.
