Overview Whole house refurbishment, double storey wrap around extension and large loft conversion. The Brief Create a WOW factor space, add glamour and fun and give the house a street side and garden side, both different. Our Solution This project was exciting from the start, the client wanted to entertain in a WOW factor space, have a panoramic view of the garden (which was to be landscaped), add bedrooms and a great master suite. We had some key elements to introduce such as an aquarium separating two rooms; double height spaces and a gloss kitchen, all of which manifest themselves in the completed scheme. Architecture is a process taking a schedule of areas, some key desires and needs, mixing the functionality and creating space. New spaces transform a house making it more valuable, giving it kerb appeal and making it feel like a different building. All of which happened at Ailsa Road.

The 1980s kitchen was good and serviceable for the couple, requiring mostly clever styling to bring it into Begg’s taste. Her dad’s shed yielded an old ladder that just needed staining before being hung above the kitchen sink for pots. Updated appliances and plenty of retro finds were sufficient to create a stylish hub for cooking and entertaining. The layout of the house meant that the couple had room for a casual dining area, a chance for Begg to mix her tulip-style chairs and pedestal table – another vintage find.

The previous renovations had been recently completed and were well done. We didn't want to waste the materials or effort that went into them. Instead, we fit this gorgeous stand alone tub in front of the window, right over the second floor laundry below. Really? Didn't this window always need a bathtub in front of it anyway? One money and earth saving technique we used here; the wall sconces are original. We donated the lampshades and used a specialty high heat endurance paint to update their look. The old closet doors were dismissed for modern sliders that tied in to the colours in a quilt the homeowners already had. The biggest change here was inside the closet. Taking out the 1990s standard shelving and creating custom storage out of flat pack made a huge difference. They were shocked by how much space was left over once they finally moved in.

We matched the new hardwood upstairs to the existing floor below as closely as possible. New lighting, a dramatic headboard, small dressers practically made to measure and luxurious curtains make the space feel both cozy and modern at the same time.

The matte floors, new paint and carefully chosen furnishings helped make the main level of the home feel more spacious than it is. Art and an industrial pendant over the dining table help zone the space.

We worked around an existing (small) shower room. A beautiful mirrored medicine cabinet for extra storage, modern hardware holds additional towels and accessories, and new paint adds a bit of depth. Photos by Inside Out Media.
