Studio PHH was brought on to design the 8,400 SF interiors for this traditional house that was already well into construction. We crafted a warm and sophisticated material palette which was carefully deployed throughout the house in order to maintain a cohesive and expansive interior. We developed a series of custom transitional details in order to enhance and compliment the existing exterior. The remodeling of the kitchen and bathroom forms the core of this interior renovation. The existing peninsula design and cabinetry broke up the ‘great room’ and stood the kitchen as a distinct element within the room. Our design strategy operates more on a principle of integration. As such, we created a galley condition with a spine of cabinetry and appliances that anchors to the long wall of the room. The feature design element is the solid Caesarstone backsplash which appears to be carved from the wall itself. The particular challenge in the windowless bathroom was how to create an inviting, expanded sense of depth without a resulting cave-like feel. Removal of a half wall, soffit and tub unified the space overall. We reinforced the unification with the deployment of a single large format tile spec. Smaller details such as touch latch cabinetry hardware and flush conditions between tile, wall and mirror further the principle that simpler is bigger, deeper and more inviting. We were also charged with elevating what was a pedestrian 1990’s townhouse to something more sophisticated and engaging. Our approach was to first remove builder grade detailing around windows and railings. Part of the goal was to provide a flexible outdoor entertaining area, but also to integrate a front drop shade to help reduce the summer's afternoon sun from entering the space; as well as the bay window and sliding doors. The "Gennius", a waterproof retractable awning by Durasol Awnings was selected by the homeowner for aesthetics and function, with a solar screen drop shade integrated between the upright support posts. As young parents, it was of utmost importance to find a durable fabric for the drop shade that not only blocked an adequate amount of sun, but retained as much view of the pool for safety when deployed. Mermet brand Natte was chosen for the drop shade. Both the retracting fabric roof and the integrated drop shade are operated by radio controlled motors and hand-held remote control. The homeowner now has complete control of the area, with on-demand protection to suit their tastes.

Kitchen remodeling project where the homeowners elected to upgrade their kitchen to a more contemporary look by installing new custom cabinets. For this project it was crucial to find more working space in such a limited kitchen size. To accommodate this, we designed a full Naxo extension table for them. This practical system consists of a tabletop peninsula that fits in the space normally provided by the drawer. Simply open the front panel to deploy the extension table. For the cabinets, the homeowners went with an Elegante door in white supermat by Northern Contours. We then installed a new quartz countertop and backsplash both done in Carrara extra. To complete the new look a new subzero fridge, Wolf induction cooktop, microwave drawer and oven were installed.
