This spacious, yet extremely friendly and inviting home lacked a kitchen with personality and functionality for this growing family and their desire to entertain others. The goal for this renovation was to provide for new and larger appliances, maintain views to the rear yard, and provide family seating space within the kitchen. The home’s existing exterior architecture provides references reminiscent Italian villas with terra cotta clay tile roofing, half-round steel windows and ornate stonework. The interior evokes similar images through the use of warm earth tone wall colors, hardwood floors, wrought-iron railings and plastered walls. The home’s existing pallet of aged materials and their warm earth tones was reinforced with the selection of new finish materials such as: red brick, limestone veneer, linoleum flooring, African-mahogany cabinets, quartz perimeter countertops, copper sinks, exhaust hood and island counter, and oil-rubbed bronze hardware and fixtures. Because matching the exterior brick veneer was no longer a possibility, the combination of limestone veneer and copper sheet metal was selected for the new exterior; both being chosen for their warmth and timeless character. In addition, new hand-crafted wrought-iron doors and windows with energy-efficient insulated glass and ornate scrollwork were chosen in lieu of wood or clad-wood windows to replicate the home’s original steel and leaded-glass windows. Kitchen — Project Description (Bolton, CT) (Full Renovation • Reconfiguration • Architectural Corrections) The original kitchen suffered from spatial imbalance and limited functionality: the right side was visually and physically heavy with cabinetry and appliances, the 135-degree angled walls lacked symmetry due to a missing window on the driveway side, and the small island could only seat two. Circulation was obstructed by a desk positioned in the main traffic flow, and the low French door felt disproportionate in scale compared to the large windows and adjacent two-story Great Room. Major Structural & Functional Improvements Repositioned window on the front elevation to the right, creating a long-desired view to the driveway while freeing space for a centered cooktop and statement hood — visually aligning with the Great Room’s redesigned fireplace focal wall. Installed a new custom sliding door, significantly taller and wider than the original French door. This upgrade enhances natural light, visually opens the kitchen to the deck, and provides unobstructed traffic flow thanks to its sliding operation. New Kitchen Layout & Enhanced Functionality Designed an entirely new layout centered around a 10' double-slab island, providing expansive workspace and a natural gathering zone. Added conversational seating for the whole family, allowing comfortable interaction on all sides of the island. Introduced purpose-designed storage solutions, including pullouts, rollouts, spice towers, tray organizers, and deep drawers to maximize usability. The Johnson Residence project, designed by Cowbell Designs, encompasses a comprehensive enhancement of the property to suit the client’s lifestyle and preferences. Here’s a description of the project’s features: Garage Addition: A new garage was constructed adjacent to the existing one, equipped with larger doors to accommodate the client’s large trucks, which could not fit through the original garage doors. Driveway Extension: The driveway was expanded in both width and length, now reaching the city road, with the necessary public works permitting obtained for this extension. Front Porch Expansion: The front porch was extended with a newly designed roof and beam system, enhancing the view from the porch and from the interior window behind the porch area. Pickleball Court: In the backyard, a pickleball court was designed and constructed, providing the clients, who are avid pickleball players, with a private space to enjoy their favorite sport. These modifications have not only improved the functionality of the residence but also its aesthetic appeal and recreational value.

This project consisted of a complete exterior upgrade due to significant rot from improper flashing. We changed some of the rooflines for improved water shed and to eliminate possible rot issues in the future. We installed all new hardi-plank siding, engineered stone and a complete handrail system. We also repaired windows, installed new doors and added a new driveway.

The exterior of this home has a classically San Francisco feel. Its rounded window features and dormers are wonderfully descriptive elements that place it in the city by the bay. Not to mention the fact that it’s located on one of the city’s many hills. Maintaining the structure’s original charm, Ann Lowengart Interiors kept their hand light on the exteriors, relandscaping and painting the garage door and brick wall.

Bamboo sides and columns bounded with manila rope and have decorative caps. Head boards, foot boards, safety and side rails have a fine woven "Lauhala" or "Raffia" matting. Edges capped with real bamboo. Ladders constructed using solid yellow pine and mortised into framework of beds to add strength and rigidity. Finished to match "bamboo" color and sheen.
