THE BRIEF Lengthy consultations with the client and her family over an 18 month period (during which a well was discovered underneath the foundations) revealed their relaxed approach to living and desire for a modern-classic look. The shape of the room and the request for 5 domino hobs determined the need for a large and sociable island. It was also important to provide the perfect place for the family to gather whilst mum cooks. A large kitchen sink was particularly desired by the owners who wanted to be able to use this area as a wet zone work station. THE CHALLENGE With such a large number of cabinets within this kitchen we created diversity and interest by introducing three harmonising finishes; sterling grey, walnut and truffle grey; each defining their own zones. Onto these we added 4 different handle types to accent the different areas and create interest and individuality. Integrating a Kohler Stages sink into a Stainless steel work top provided the perfect wet zone area, whereas on the island the Blanco Rivers Silestone offers a more classic and homely appeal without compromising practicality. THE OUTCOME This new kitchen is a world apart from the clients original wooden in-frame kitchen. Its understated style is innately calming whilst the careful space planning means that it is fantastically practical and a joy to use. In the main kitchen galley area the user has easy access to sink, cooking and refrigeration within a few steps. The perimeter areas of the kitchen house the ovens and the display storage and allow for easy passage way to the living/dining area without interrupting the working area.

River Valley created Comprehensive Design and Installation of Hardscape, Lighting and Planting. The homeowners requested an outdoor living space that had to include a swimming pool, pool house, patios, and an outdoor kitchen. The space and pool had to be large enough to accommodate large gatherings. Several challenges had to be solved during the design phase such as the uneven grade of the backyard, water runoff, the restrictions imposed by the drain field on one side and the reserve drain field on the other and the building set back at the rear. These restrictions provided a very limited area of usable space. Measurements and elevations had to be absolutely precise in order for the project to remain within the imposed boundaries. The grading issues were particularly challenging so substantial retaining walls were used to elevate the pool and patio surfaces. This allowed minimizing the number of steps between the various levels in order to maximize the usable square footage of the patio while simultaneously staying within the allowable area. The design also dictated that the pool house line up precisely with the main house so its placement was particularly important. The materials chosen for the wall surfaces were dictated by what was already present on the house. Travertine stone was chosen for the patio surface to fulfill the homeowner’s desire for real stone and compliment the colors and textures of the wall materials. The careful choice of materials resulted in a cohesive, unified and comfortable outdoor living space.

Out with the dated honey oak, and in with the sophisticated ebony shaded cabinetry, millwork and dry-stack stone fireplace, not to mention what started it all—a desire for a bigger TV to take center stage. These Ham Lake residents wanted to upgrade their small, very old TV to a large screen high definition unit. Unfortunately, their 15-year-old corner built in wouldn't accommodate the needed space. Like so many things in remodeling, the simplest desire leads to the most dramatic effects. In this particular case, the old TV cabinet and fireplace was removed and replaced with a sophisticated entertainment cabinet ensemble shaded in a dark ebony glaze and a dry-stack stone surround. The interior layout incorporates all the necessary functional design elements to make it practical for day-to-day family life, while being particularly healthy and comfortable. We bridged the gap between Modern and sensible, while respecting the surrounding homes in the neighborhood. By minimizing circulation (hall) spaces and maximizing livable spaces the home lives large. An open Living/ Kitchen/ Dining space includes a walk-through back pantry that allows this home to remain neat and attractive while still serving the day-to-day needs of an active family. A multi-functional dining table adds to the exceptional “livability” features as well. North-facing windows make it easier to control sunlight and flood the main living area with natural diffused sunlight that makes spaces feel larger yet stay cooler in the summer months. While there is plenty of balanced natural light, there is very little direct solar radiation - reducing glare, heat, eyestrain, and is simply just more comfortable to hang out in.

The goal of this project was to provide a lush and vast garden for the new owners of this recently remodeled brick Georgian. Located in Wheaton this acre plus property is surrounded by beautiful Oaks. Preserving the Oaks became a particular challenge with the ample front walk and generous entertaining spaces the client desired. Under most of the Oaks the turf was in very poor condition, and most of the property was covered with undesirable overgrown underbrush such as Garlic Mustard weed and Buckthorn. With a recently completed addition, the garages were pushed farther from the front door leaving a large distance between the drive and entry to the home. This prompted the addition of a secondary door off the kitchen. A meandering walk curves past the secondary entry and leads guests through the front garden to the main entry. Off the secondary door a “kitchen patio” complete with a custom gate and Green Mountain Boxwood hedge give the clients a quaint space to enjoy a morning cup of joe. Stepping stone pathways lead around the home and weave through multiple pocket gardens within the vast backyard. The paths extend deep into the property leading to individual and unique gardens with a variety of plantings that are tied together with rustic stonewalls and sinuous turf areas. Closer to the home a large paver patio opens up to the backyard gardens. New stoops were constructed and existing stoops were covered in bluestone and mortared stonewalls were added, complimenting the classic Georgian architecture. The completed project accomplished all the goals of creating a lush and vast garden that fit the remodeled home and lifestyle of its new owners. Through careful planning, all mature Oaks were preserved, undesirables removed and numerous new plantings along with detailed stonework helped to define the new landscape.
