Out with the dated honey oak, and in with the sophisticated ebony shaded cabinetry, millwork and dry-stack stone fireplace, not to mention what started it all—a desire for a bigger TV to take center stage. These Ham Lake residents wanted to upgrade their small, very old TV to a large screen high definition unit. Unfortunately, their 15-year-old corner built in wouldn't accommodate the needed space. Like so many things in remodeling, the simplest desire leads to the most dramatic effects. In this particular case, the old TV cabinet and fireplace was removed and replaced with a sophisticated entertainment cabinet ensemble shaded in a dark ebony glaze and a dry-stack stone surround. The home’s contemporary décor stemmed from the homeowner's desire for a neutral palette and timeless interior with function and style that is also warm and welcoming. The design works well for entertaining friends and family. The sectional sofas allow ample seating for the family to enjoy each other’s company without overpowering the rooms. In the living room, the gallery wall creates visual impact as soon as you walk in the front door. This is our “statement piece” in this particular room, creating great interest and inviting guests to walk in and take a look. The mix of black and white photography and sketches with the hues of vibrant color in the abstract art provides a genuinely distinct point of view about the overall aesthetic of the home. Paul S. It is truly a joy to work with so many homeowners and see all their different visions come to life. This complete remodel was no exception. The original galley style kitchen had an undersized and rarely used breakfast nook under the corner window. We talked about it prior to the remodel and agreed this was space that could be far better used and accordingly removed it. We also removed the wall that separated the kitchen and dining room, which gave us many more options to work with. First, the owners wanted a largely contemporary feel to their new kitchen, hence the all new, custom built white cabinets we used extensively. To keep the feel a bit warmer, we used alder wood for the cabinets around the fridge and for all the highlights, including all the trim. With the nook removed, we relocated the sink to the corner to better enjoy the view and to make better use of the new space. We located the dishwasher to one side of the sink and the trash receptacle to the other side, making clean up a much more efficient process without so many steps being taken around the kitchen. Note how the custom granite counter is shaped to allow closer access to the sink and the shelf below the window. The original windows were also replaced with bigger openings to allow more light into the smaller space. There’s an entry door near one end of the kitchen. We added some apothecary drawers just under the upper cabinets to eliminate the “junk drawer” so many kitchens seem to end up with after a while. There’s a drawer here for each of the four occupants of the home for each to use as they desire, like car keys, coupons, notes, or anything else they may desire. This also allows each person to keep their drawer as clean or messy as they like without interfering with the other occupants. The spice cabinet was particularly fun to design for this space. The rack itself tucks neatly inside, then pulls out to spin a full 360 degrees, making superb use of the corner cabinet and providing easy access to all the spices. We have enough options for appliance garages that we prefer to call them condos. This particular example is one of our smaller units that neatly hides and protects all the assorted countertop appliances, while also keeping the counters tidy. With the opened wall to the dining room, we were able to add significantly more cabinet space. For the row of cabinets over the bar we added glass faces on both sides of the cabinets to allow more light to pass through (providing a much more open feeling), then also added lights inside the cabinets to help highlight family heirlooms. We finished it all off with a mosaic backsplash to add just a bit more character while adding to the contemporary feel of this magnificent new kitchen.

This landscape lighting project was primarily in the back yard, but this photo shows an interesting retro-fit lighting effect we installed in the front yard. This existing house number box was lit from the inside by our wide-effect Ozark fixture, making for a stunning glow effect. While this was an existing box, our in-house metal fabrication facility has crafted similar boxes and shapes with cutouts of all sorts. These are great ways to illuminate a street number or the name of a property, and is available in any desired size or finish. These work particularly well here in Canada, since the point of illumination is shielded from snow, making them excellent year-round effects for important house number and sign lighting.

For This young couple we went with a neutral pallet as they desired pops of colors with their furnishings, The wall paint color acted as a canvas, and the furniture, painting and accessories as there focal point.

THE BRIEF Lengthy consultations with the client and her family over an 18 month period (during which a well was discovered underneath the foundations) revealed their relaxed approach to living and desire for a modern-classic look. The shape of the room and the request for 5 domino hobs determined the need for a large and sociable island. It was also important to provide the perfect place for the family to gather whilst mum cooks. A large kitchen sink was particularly desired by the owners who wanted to be able to use this area as a wet zone work station. THE CHALLENGE With such a large number of cabinets within this kitchen we created diversity and interest by introducing three harmonising finishes; sterling grey, walnut and truffle grey; each defining their own zones. Onto these we added 4 different handle types to accent the different areas and create interest and individuality. THE BRIEF Lengthy consultations with the client and her family over an 18 month period (during which a well was discovered underneath the foundations) revealed their relaxed approach to living and desire for a modern-classic look. The shape of the room and the request for 5 domino hobs determined the need for a large and sociable island. It was also important to provide the perfect place for the family to gather whilst mum cooks. A large kitchen sink was particularly desired by the owners who wanted to be able to use this area as a wet zone work station. THE CHALLENGE With such a large number of cabinets within this kitchen we created diversity and interest by introducing three harmonising finishes; sterling grey, walnut and truffle grey; each defining their own zones. Onto these we added 4 different handle types to accent the different areas and create interest and individuality. The kitchen is designed for two serious home chefs who often entertain guests for dinner parties. Merging the kitchen and dining room into a singular space was a strategic design decision to both foster their style of ‘chefs table’ entertaining, and also make the most efficient use of valuable floor space - a common consideration in most Toronto homes. The table becomes an island-like surface for additional prep space, and also as the surface upon which the meal is eventually enjoyed.

Easy on the eyes, Healthier and Easy to live in: The design inspiration came from the desire for a contemporary home that responds particularly well to the prevailing cooling breezes and the hot afternoon sun. It offers views of downtown from a private “get-away” tower room that serves as a “thermal siphon” that enhances comforting natural ventilation in the home. The interior layout incorporates all the necessary functional design elements to make it practical for day-to-day family life, while being particularly healthy and comfortable. We bridged the gap between Modern and sensible, while respecting the surrounding homes in the neighborhood. By minimizing circulation (hall) spaces and maximizing livable spaces the home lives large. An open Living/ Kitchen/ Dining space includes a walk-through back pantry that allows this home to remain neat and attractive while still serving the day-to-day needs of an active family. A multi-functional dining table adds to the exceptional “livability” features as well. North-facing windows make it easier to control sunlight and flood the main living area with natural diffused sunlight that makes spaces feel larger yet stay cooler in the summer months. While there is plenty of balanced natural light, there is very little direct solar radiation - reducing glare, heat, eyestrain, and is simply just more comfortable to hang out in.

For this beautiful bathroom, we have used water-proof tadelakt plaster to cover walls and floor and combined a few square meters of exclusive handmade lava tiles that we brought all the way from Morocco. All colours blend in to create a warm and cosy atmosphere for the relaxing shower time.
