Based in Michigan full-time, a network television executive and his wife wanted a comfortable haven to escape the cold months in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Empty nesters, they wanted a spot where their adult children could all come together to gather and connect as a family.
The mediterranean-style home, located in a prestigious country club community, was in desperate need of modernizing when we saw the space. The home was dark and dated, with Tuscan style details, an awkward floor plan and mustard walls. A wonderful before and after story, the home is now a vibrant, beautiful, open and contemporary space, designed by Krista Watterworth Alterman of KRISTA + HOME. This 1926 Portland home was in desperate need of restoration; especially the bathrooms. The homeowners’ desire was to stay true to the authentic tile colors, shapes and layouts that were popular in the Art Deco period of the late 1920’s and 1930’s. Unfortunately, none of the original tile was salvageable with the exception of several small, floral medallions. The original floral medallions became the inspiration for the cheerful blue and yellow master bathroom and were used as accents throughout the room. Hawthorne Tile worked with our partners at Pratt & Larson on this unique project.

This master bathroom was in desperate need of a remodel. The compact master bathroom was cramped and out dated. Johnny Rhino stepped in to create a more open, bright, and comfortable space without knocking out walls. The installation of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, a medicine cabinet inset into the wall, recessed lighting as well as wall-mounted lighting, and a pocket door helped to really open up this space!

This master closet was designed for a couple that recently purchased a 150 year old loft in desperate need of a complete makeover. We designed this master closet space to be shared, in white with lots of hanging space and drawer storage. Shelves are also added for shoe storage and folded items.

This kitchen was in desperate need of a makeover. (see the original space at the end) There was a truly odd peninsula that blocked the cook from access to the refrigerator behind it. The span was only 33" which made working in the area almost impossible. The peninsula was also the weekly dining area, but did not function well. This makeovers is truly one of my favoirites as it shows what good design can do for a space!

Before we were hired, this basement space was empty and not utilized. Our clients desired an area that felt grown up and they desperately wanted to claim their space. We created a fun hang-out space where they could enjoy music, warm up with a new fireplace, and have a drink while the kids were sleeping or catching a movie upstairs. We also added a work from home space with a desk and comfortable desk chair.

This compact, urban backyard was in desperate need of privacy. We created a series of outdoor rooms, privacy screens, and lush plantings all with an Asian-inspired design sense. Elements include a covered outdoor lounge room, sun decks, rock gardens, shade garden, evergreen plant screens, and raised boardwalk to connect the various outdoor spaces. The finished space feels like a true backyard oasis.

In the before photo of this outdated, midcentury moden kitchen, you can see the owners were literally spilling over! This kitchen lacked storage and style and an out-of-place window between the kitchen and hall did the room no favors. By eliminating the window and rotating the island along the new perimeter wall, we created a much more open space and added desperately needed storage along both wall.

This main floor was dated and the kitchen was in desperate need of a layout change. After reviewing the floorplans + removing a couple walls, we created a large, open concept feel perfect for entertaining + family functions! Featuring two tone cabinetry, a custom bar area + a stunning new media wall, you won’t believe the before + afters!

Originally built in 1942, my clients loved their home and location, but desperately needed an updated kitchen. As plans of their project took shape, they knew the answer was to expand their square footage during their remodel to make the most of it. We pushed out the back of their home to encompass a larger kitchen and new family room, added a butler’s pantry and mudroom, remodeled the dining room, entry and stairs, and added/enlarged the master bedroom ensuite that sits above the new family room. Their sophisticated aesthetic is showcased throughout their home with beautiful wainscoting, wallpaper, surprise elements, and subtle details of soft ivories, steely blues, and warm woods.

The homeowner wanted an oasis for himself to be able to relax and be one with nature. The windows in this space are surrounded by large pines, and he wanted to bring the outside in with a refinement to the design versus a lodge feel. The room started off as a white canvas. The original walls and furniture were all white, and dim due to no ambient of decorative lighting. The space was in desperate need of warm tones to make the room feel cozy and inviting. The homeowner now uses this space daily to relax and kick back after a long day of work.
