Camp Wobegon is a nostalgic waterfront retreat for a multi-generational family. The home's name pays homage to a radio show the homeowner listened to when he was a child in Minnesota. Throughout the home, there are nods to the sentimental past paired with modern features of today. The five-story home sits on Round Lake in Charlevoix with a beautiful view of the yacht basin and historic downtown area. Each story of the home is devoted to a theme, such as family, grandkids, and wellness. The different stories boast standout features from an in-home fitness center complete with his and her locker rooms to a movie theater and a grandkids' getaway with murphy beds. The kids' library highlights an upper dome with a hand-painted welcome to the home's visitors. Throughout Camp Wobegon, the custom finishes are apparent. The entire home features radius drywall, eliminating any harsh corners. Masons carefully crafted two fireplaces for an authentic touch. In the great room, there are hand constructed dark walnut beams that intrigue and awe anyone who enters the space. Birchwood artisans and select Allenboss carpenters built and assembled the grand beams in the home. Perhaps the most unique room in the home is the exceptional dark walnut study. It exudes craftsmanship through the intricate woodwork. The floor, cabinetry, and ceiling were crafted with care by Birchwood carpenters. When you enter the study, you can smell the rich walnut. The room is a nod to the homeowner's father, who was a carpenter himself. The custom details don't stop on the interior. As you walk through 26-foot NanoLock doors, you're greeted by an endless pool and a showstopping view of Round Lake. Moving to the front of the home, it's easy to admire the two copper domes that sit atop the roof. Yellow cedar siding and painted cedar railing complement the eye-catching domes.

San Marino based clients were interested in developing a property that had been in their family for generations. This was an exciting proposition as it was one of the last surviving bayside double lots on the scenic Coronado peninsula in San Diego. They desired a holiday home that would be a gathering place for their large, close- knit family. They desired a holiday home that would be a gathering place for their large, close-knit family. Facing the Back Bay, overlooking downtown and the Bay Bridge, this property presented us with a unique opportunity to design a vacation home with a dual personality. One side faces a bustling harbor with a constant parade of yachts, cargo vessels and military ships while the other opens onto a deep, quiet contemplative garden. The home’s shingle-style influence carries on the historical Coronado tradition of clapboard and Craftsman bungalows built in the shadow of the great Hotel Del Coronado which was erected at the turn of the last century. In order to create an informal feel to the residence, we devised a concept that eliminated the need for a “front door”. Instead, one walks through the garden and enters the “Great Hall” through either one of two French doors flanking a walk-in stone fireplace. Both two-story bedroom wings bookend this central wood beam vaulted room which serves as the “heart of the home”, and opens to both views. Three sets of stairs are discretely tucked away inside the bedroom wings. In lieu of a formal dining room, the family convenes and dines around a beautiful table and banquette set into a circular window bay off the kitchen which overlooks the lights of the city beyond the harbor. Working with noted interior designer Betty Ann Marshall, we designed a unique kitchen that was inspired by the colors and textures of a fossil the couple found on a honeymoon trip to the quarries of Montana. We set that ancient fossil into a matte glass backsplash behind the professional cook’s stove. A warm library with walnut paneling and a bayed window seat affords a refuge for the family to read or play board games. The couple’s fine craft and folk art collection is on prominent display throughout the house and helps to set an intimate and whimsical tone. Another architectural feature devoted to family is the play room lit by a dramatic cupola which beacons the older grandchildren and their friends. Below the play room is a four car garage that allows the patriarch space to refurbish an antique fire truck, a mahogany launch boat and several vintage cars. Their jet skis and kayaks are housed in another garage designed for that purpose. Lattice covered skylights that allow dappled sunlight to bathe the loggia affords a comfortable refuge to watch the kids swim and gaze out upon the rushing water, the Coronado Bay Bridge and the romantic downtown San Diego skyline. The project didn’t call for any structural or space planning changes but the makeover still had a massive impact on their home. The homeowners wanted to change their dated 1990’s brown speckled granite and light maple kitchen. They liked the welcoming feeling they got from the wood and warm tones in their current kitchen, but this style clashed with their vision of a deVOL type kitchen, a London-based furniture company. Their inspiration came from the country homes of the UK that mix the warmth of traditional detail with clean lines and modern updates. To create their vision, we started with all new framed cabinets with a modified overlay painted in beautiful, understated colors. Our clients were adamant about “no white cabinets.” Instead we used an oyster color for the perimeter and a custom color match to a specific shade of green chosen by the homeowner. The use of a simple color pallet reduces the visual noise and allows the space to feel open and welcoming. We also painted the trim above the cabinets the same color to make the cabinets look taller. The room trim was painted a bright clean white to match the ceiling. In true English fashion our clients are not coffee drinkers, but they LOVE tea. We created a tea station for them where they can prepare and serve tea. We added plenty of glass to showcase their tea mugs and adapted the cabinetry below to accommodate storage for their tea items. Function is also key for the English kitchen and the homeowners. They requested a deep farmhouse sink and a cabinet devoted to their heavy mixer because they bake a lot. We then got rid of the stovetop on the island and wall oven and replaced both of them with a range located against the far wall. This gives them plenty of space on the island to roll out dough and prepare any number of baked goods. We then removed the bifold pantry doors and created custom built-ins with plenty of usable storage for all their cooking and baking needs. The client wanted a big change to the dining room but still wanted to use their own furniture and rug. We installed a toile-like wallpaper on the top half of the room and supported it with white wainscot paneling. We also changed out the light fixture, showing us once again that small changes can have a big impact. As the final touch, we also re-did the powder room to be in line with the rest of the first floor. We had the new vanity painted in the same oyster color as the kitchen cabinets and then covered the walls in a whimsical patterned wallpaper. The Tribeca kitchen incorporates design concepts and stylistic references to past eras, devoting keen attention to finishes and to durability. The result is a line of vintage-style furnishings that have been given a fresh, contemporary twist, through the skillful use of color and the careful introduction of decorative accessories that manage to transform the look of the whole kitchen, creating new concepts that will win over families with all kinds of tastes. They’re furnishings that will fit in equally well with a city loft or a country cottage, alternating modern features with sudden stylistic déjà-vus: shapes and motifs from a rediscovered, rejuvenated past.

A corner of the lower level family room is devoted to a workspace for one of the homeowners. Reclaimed wood shelves mix with a custom-made, floating walnut desk that echos the walnut mantel in the upper level.

This light and bright bathroom includes a stunning stained glass mosaic from Oceanside Glass Tile. The chevron pattern is more contemporary but the neutral colors keep it classic. The use of a more solid white tile for the top half helps balance the space. Filling the niche with the same decorative material is a nice finishing touch. The main bathroom floor is a 12X24 porcelain tile laid in a way to mimic the movement from the chevron pattern. Beautiful!

It wasn’t necessary to overthink things when Axis Mundi designed interiors for an apartment at Brooklyn’s glass-sheathed 1 Grand Army Plaza, the luxury building by Richard Meier already endowed with all the “starchitect” bells and whistles, as well as drop-dead stunning views of Brooklyn, the harbor and Prospect Park. What did require considerable aptitude was to strike the right balance between respect for these assets, particularly the panoramas, and livability. The all-white scheme doesn’t just complement Meier’s own aesthetic devotion to this purest of pure hues; it serves as a cool backdrop for the views, affording comfortable vantage points from which to enjoy them, yet not drawing attention away from the splendors of one of the world’s most distinctive boroughs. Sleek, low-lying Italian seating avoids distracting interruptions on the horizon line. So our morning bar, right inside the bathroom, has a gorgeous backsplash made from stained glass and antique mirror mosaic tile, Oceanside Devotion. The countertop, complementing the backsplash and wallpaper colors, is the same natural Pure White Quartzite product we see on the vanity tops. The glass fronted cabinets are lit for another great look and could serve as nightlights too. Very nice!

For their devoted small-batch whiskey enthusiasts, Old Carter Whiskey Co. created a members-only social lounge and tasting room in Louisville, KY, designed by co-owner Mark Carter himself. At the heart of the space is American Tin Ceilings’ Pattern #29 in Gold Brushed Bronze, adding warmth, depth, and old-world richness overhead. The ornate ceiling detail enhances the room’s sense of heritage and exclusivity, making it the perfect backdrop for conversation, tasting, and connection.
