The River Birch at the corner was originally in the location I am standing to take the picture, but I moved it closer to the house for immediate privacy. It is surrounded by 7 Variegated Liriope that were under the Weeping Cherry tree at the inside corner. My husband also added a wall in the front for a seasonal flower bed and I added Japanese Lilac Tree in the center for great fragrance by the front door. Linda Parsons

To anchor a modern house, designed by Frederick Fisher & Partners, Campion Walker brought in a mature oak grove that at first frames the home and then invites the visitor to explore the grounds including an intimate culinary garden and stone fruit orchard. The neglected hillside on the back of the property once overgrown with ivy was transformed into a California native oak woodland, with under-planting of ceanothus and manzanitas. We used recycled water to create a dramatic water feature cut directly into the limestone entranceway framed by a cacti and succulent garden.

This home had zero front landscape. The client requested low maintenance, succulents and rock elements. The area was not full sun, but had significant morning light and in fact had quite a bit of shade. This was a bit of a challenge to specify plants that could thrive in mixed light, but could handle direct sun for several hours a day. We incorporated some tough but lovely plants that require very little upkeep except to trim off spent/dying leaves to keep them looking clean. By using a rock edging and heavy mulching under the plants, we further reduced maintenance. We added landscape lighting to show off the garden at night and to provide subtle welcoming light to the entry.

To accommodate storm-water runoff from the driveway, a naturalized stone channel was created to direct the runoff away from erosion-sensitive areas. The channel was then planted on either side with naturalistic vegetation to create a landscape focal point.

Designed for a Cliff May "Rancho" home, this project resulted comfortable outdoor spaces for relaxation and entertaining. New walls and fencing, softened with lush planting, create a private atmosphere. And a casual, meadow-style garden filled with California native plants echoes the home's open, airy feeling. © Wing Wong This two bedroom apartment on New York's Upper West Side underwent a gut renovation to allow continuous sight lines and views in three directions: east to Central Park, north to the George Washington Bridge, and east to the Hudson River. The master bedroom was reconfigured to create an adjacent study with two exposures. Mondrian-inspired pocket doors allow light to penetrate the apartment while also providing a private study. The project was completed in an accelerated time frame and within a strict budget.

All plants and trees had to be brought in through the house as there is no direct access to the backyard. A classic easy to maintain garden viewed from different levels was designed. Patio had to be releveled and reset.
