To anchor a modern house, designed by Frederick Fisher & Partners, Campion Walker brought in a mature oak grove that at first frames the home and then invites the visitor to explore the grounds including an intimate culinary garden and stone fruit orchard. The neglected hillside on the back of the property once overgrown with ivy was transformed into a California native oak woodland, with under-planting of ceanothus and manzanitas. We used recycled water to create a dramatic water feature cut directly into the limestone entranceway framed by a cacti and succulent garden.

Access to the lake from this charming home required navigating a steep slope. db landscaping LLC was able to negotiate this terrain and provide comfortable lake access using oversized natural stone steps and landings that meander through native plant material. The upper patio space provides natural outdoor gathering space directly off the main living area and allows for a perched view of the lake beyond.

A full-range bluestone walkway turns towards the front door where bluestone was mortared to the entry. Bluestone steppers are laid through a bed and the lawn leading to the back courtyard. A hedge of Green Gem boxwood partially conceals a maintenance strip of slate chips which has underlying drain tile to capture the water expelled from the roof in storms as the home lacks gutters.

Tucked back into the hill behind the beach at Wategos Byron Bay, ‘The Wing House’ as it is known occupies a commanding position with great views out to Julian Rocks. The slope is steep and the house is positioned at the rear of the block so the garden needed to enhance the entrance experience; help absorb the house into the terrain and simplify the outlook from the house to the ocean. The structural gestures in the garden are subtle with emphasis on natural materials of local origin and plant material that was cohesive with the natural surrounds and requiring minimal maintenance.

The area was not full sun, but had significant morning light and in fact had quite a bit of shade. This was a bit of a challenge to specify plants that could thrive in mixed light, but could handle direct sun for several hours a day. We incorporated some tough but lovely plants that require very little upkeep except to trim off spent/dying leaves to keep them looking clean. By using a rock edging and heavy mulching under the plants, we further reduced maintenance. We added landscape lighting to show off the garden at night and to provide subtle welcoming light to the entry.

This secret garden is actually called a “Mary Garden”. It is a sacred place for the religious homeowners as it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Originally the plans called for a small chapel space in the home as one of the owner’s sons is a priest. When we were going in this direction we had it so the plumbing from the sink of the priests bathroom would actually filter through the plants so they would drink from the Holy Water left behind. I feel the whole idea of this space is very moving and spiritual. From the viewpoint of someone that didn’t know the history of the space though I’d imagine they’d fine it at the least a romantic space.

An in-ground pool anchors the backyard layout, bordered by diagonally laid travertine pavers in a lightly textured finish. The pool edge features narrow-format coping stones, and the interior is surfaced with a reflective, aqua-toned tile blend that enhances water clarity under direct sun exposure. A gas fire bowl is installed at one corner, cast in concrete and slightly elevated for visual balance against the flat deck plane. Beyond the hardscape, a strip of manicured lawn separates the pool from the dock-facing garden. Palms of staggered heights are positioned to offer both shade and visual privacy without obstructing the open water view. Adjustable mesh lounge chairs are arranged along the sun deck, all oriented toward the bay. Low planter beds with symmetrical shrub groupings define the property edge while maintaining permeability. The outdoor zone combines hard material stability with layered softscaping for a balanced, resort-style residential profile.
