Building Designers Association of AustraliaThe challenge for Costata Landscape Design presented by this project was all about taking the disparate elements of a large and underused property and bringing them together in a cohesive whole. The landscape now flows seamlessly from street front to house, entertaining area, pool, garden and firepit precinct overlooking the local creek. The garden construction elements are softened in shape and form providing counterpoint to the dominant straight lines of the house and pool. Massed plantings below feature trees intertwine, providing contrast of foliage colour, shape and height further blurring the lines between built structure and the landscape. The firepit was located within a precinct cut into the slope of the land and set within large boulders. Placement of the boulders created negative spaces for the garden to flow into and fill. Door Store and WindowsThe main home with incredible curb appeal. The homeowners completely transformed the curb appeal of both houses. Originally the homes were red brick with very different looks, including disparate shutter and door styles. The client went with crisp white painted brick on the main house and an antique white wash-style finish on the guesthouse. They selected matching cool gray roofs, dark shutters, and exterior lighting fixtures. Now, the homes look like family members: similar, but not identical!

57st. designThe Simone Table is part of the Simone Collection. Designed first for Chicago’s Sol Cafe and then amended for wider release, the Simone Collection is a set of minimal, complementary tables and benches. This iteration is made entirely from solid walnut and held together with dovetail joinery. The pieces in the Simone Collection juxtapose disparate design eras and traditions. The dovetails are a longtime favorite of traditional woodworkers and are as beautiful as they are strong; spaced in irregular intervals, they offer visual complexity to an otherwise understated form. On the other hand, the hand-rubbed, Danish oil and wax finish recalls Scandinavian modernism.

Acorn Cottage StylePicking up the color theme of silver and ivory from the rug motif, we anchored the light, airy feel to the dark modern lines of the antique Chinese table (a family heirloom), and the French look of the new piece at the end of the room, which functions as a bar server with lit glass shelves for liquor and glasses, and drawers lined in felt for flatware storage. The wood of both dark pieces was carefully matched to avoid disparity. The style were already enough variance. The intricately framed mirrors between the windows reflect light from the chandelier back into the room. The small framed items next to the large French piece are antique engravings from Europe matted in an old velvet. I love the opulence of the puddles on the drapery. Not overdone, but discreet.
