Massive boulders broker the marriage between the modern and the natural that NanaWall symbolizes. For example, one rock is unnaturally anchored on the concrete patio, grass and traditional Zen gravel. The remarkable effect pays homage to disparate cultural aesthetics, and consequently embraces the modern. This refined garden can be enjoyed by the homeowners while making dinner, lounging in the pool house, or swimming in the pool. Bathroom - transitional bathroom idea in Orlando

A humble staircase rises to the occasion in this contemporary renovation in Huntington Woods. A favorite aspect of this 2018 project is the mitered stair treads and tapered risers of the lowest three steps that angle out in a delicate, slightly exaggerated fashion. The subtle acute angles add a sense of lightness and panache to the staircase. Wrapping the stairs allows the staircase to open to the great room and eliminates the need for a handrail on the great room side. A custom iron railing with walnut handrail extends from the floor all the way to the upstairs landing in a continuous fluid motion. The iron supports are adorned with parallelograms that echo the rise of the staircase and add to the lighthearted mix of disparate angles in the space. The iron rail design runs parallel with the stair stringer, creating a linear relationship between the stair and railing. An inspired pattern of interlocking hexagons on the black and white carpet runner adds playfulness and movement. A figure appears to fly up the stairs in a 1925 advertising poster by Jean d'Ylen, whimsically placed above the landing. Natural light from above floods the steps.

In the hills of San Anselmo in Marin County, this 5,000 square foot existing multi-story home was enlarged to 6,000 square feet with a new dance studio addition with new master bedroom suite and sitting room for evening entertainment and morning coffee. Sited on a steep hillside one acre lot, the back yard was unusable. New concrete retaining walls and planters were designed to create outdoor play and lounging areas with stairs that cascade down the hill forming a wrap-around walkway. The goal was to make the new addition integrate the disparate design elements of the house and calm it down visually. The scope was not to change everything, just the rear façade and some of the side facades. The new addition is a long rectangular space inserted into the rear of the building with new up-swooping roof that ties everything together. Clad in red cedar, the exterior reflects the relaxed nature of the one acre wooded hillside site. Fleetwood windows and wood patterned tile complete the exterior color material palate. The sitting room overlooks a new patio area off of the children’s playroom and features a butt glazed corner window providing views filtered through a grove of bay laurel trees. Inside is a television viewing area with wetbar off to the side that can be closed off with a concealed pocket door to the master bedroom. The bedroom was situated to take advantage of these views of the rear yard and the bed faces a stone tile wall with recessed skylight above. The master bath, a driving force for the project, is large enough to allow both of them to occupy and use at the same time. The new dance studio and gym was inspired for their two daughters and has become a facility for the whole family. All glass, mirrors and space with cushioned wood sports flooring, views to the new level outdoor area and tree covered side yard make for a dramatic turnaround for a home with little play or usable outdoor space previously. A two-story fireplace is the central focus in this home. Our clients brought two disparate design aesthetics to the design table - he wanted rustic hunting lodge - she wanted anything but rustic hunting lodge! The result is a warm mix of the two into a beautiful and very livable home. This home was Designed by Ed Kriskywicz and built by Meadowlark Design+Build in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The landscape now flows seamlessly from street front to house, entertaining area, pool, garden and firepit precinct overlooking the local creek. The garden construction elements are softened in shape and form providing counterpoint to the dominant straight lines of the house and pool. Massed plantings below feature trees intertwine, providing contrast of foliage colour, shape and height further blurring the lines between built structure and the landscape. The firepit was located within a precinct cut into the slope of the land and set within large boulders. Placement of the boulders created negative spaces for the garden to flow into and fill. The scale of the surrounding garden anchors the firepit into the vast, open space of the paddock and creates an intimacy, as European Olives and Chinese Junipers grow to bring a sense of seclusion overlooking the creek below towering Blackbutts.
