The renovations at Horseshoe Hill transformed a disjointed property into an alluring farmhouse with strong connections to the landscape and a fresh aesthetic to complement the owner’s South African furnishings. A new main gable establishes a strong central focus for the massing, and an entry wing addition welcomes visitors with a charming porch and inviting foyer. New south-facing covered porches create comfortable outdoor living areas, connect major rooms to the outdoors, and provide shade and filtered light for interior spaces. The home’s updated floor plan distills an existing warren of disconnected, small chambers into spacious, open rooms that infuse the house with a modern flow and engage the new pool.

/Zero VOC means no Volatile Organic Compounds – those long-chain hydrocarbons that contribute to interior air pollution and can combine with nitrogen oxides to form ground-level ozone – are released as the finish cures.
A zero-VOC finish is hard to find in the floor coating industry and we had been searching for one for a while. It’s not exactly clear why the floor finishing business is so far behind the paint industry – VOC-free paints have been available in mainstream retail for at least two years.
Flooring finishes seem to rely heavily on those volatile petroleum-distillate-based solvents that keep the solids and resins in solution until applied but evaporate quickly to allow the finish to dry and cure in a reasonable time.
But mineral spirits and petroleum distillates release high levels of VOCs that can cause eye, skin, nose and throat irritation, and they are neurotoxins that may depress or damage the brain and nervous system. Short-term exposure to VOCs can cause dizziness, headache, drowsiness and nausea.

At 19 Irving Avenue, the rear exterior, pool, and patio come together as a masterclass in Joseph Eichler’s vision of total design—where structure, landscape, and daily life are seamlessly intertwined.

From the rear elevation, the home reveals its full architectural intent. Long horizontal lines stretch outward, softened by expansive walls of glass that dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior. The patio extends naturally from the home, not as an addition, but as a continuation—blurring where the house ends and the landscape begins.
At the center of this composition, the pool anchors the space with its distinctive geometric form. It reflects the home’s angular language, creating a visual dialogue between water and structure that feels both deliberate and effortless. Light dances across its surface throughout the day, casting subtle reflections back onto the glass and surrounding planes.
The patio itself is understated yet highly intentional. Open, breathable, and free of excess, it invites gathering without ever feeling crowded. It’s a space designed for movement—for stepping out from the living areas, for quiet mornings, for evenings that extend naturally outdoors. The flow is intuitive, guided by sightlines rather than walls.
What makes this rear exterior so compelling is its sense of balance. Nothing competes; everything works together. In this space, Eichler distilled a philosophy that would define his legacy—that modern living isn’t confined to the interior, but expanded through a seamless connection to the outdoors.

The large multi-function kitchen is the centre of daily life in the home. We've used two banks of full-height cabinetry to conceal a host of complex infrastructure and storage areas, so that what's visible is distilled down to three simple elements - two perimeter cabinets and an island.
The back wall of the kitchen separates the front foyer from the private spaces in the home. The dining room is located just beyond, within easy access of the butler's pantry that's concealed behind the cabinet unit visible on the left of this photo.

A close-up view of the custom drapery reveals a softly undulating pattern that introduces gentle movement and refined texture to the space. The fabric’s nuanced design captures and distills the room’s full color palette, weaving together its layered tones into a cohesive, elegant expression. This tailored window treatment enhances the overall composition with a sense of fluidity and sophistication, reinforcing the interior’s curated luxury aesthetic while adding depth, softness, and visual continuity throughout the room.
