Keeping the home's turn of the century roots, the main floor bath (originally the only bathroom in the house) increased in size by 50% by incorporating the small corridor that used to be immediately outside. As such, no square footage was taken from any other space, but the resulting 3/4 bath boasts a roomy subway tile and glass shower, which further enhances the sense of space. A second door in the bathroom connects to the guest bedroom and creates a private ensuite when house-guests drop in. Large scale wall paper, rather than make the space feel small, further enhances the spaciousness of the room. This home stuck to a monochrome color palette throughout, to tie the open spaces together. A variety of textures kept the color scheme fresh and interesting. Diverse shapes were added here to change up an otherwise angular and square space.

Completed the Summer/Fall of 2020, this Ross, CA back landscape was re-imagined to remove the leaking pool and replace the water-thirsty/tired lawn. The result is a beautiful landscape with more usable and functional areas for outdoor living and enjoyment. Filled with an abundance of diverse, lower-water plants and enhancements. A feast for the eyes and senses for the homeowners to enjoy throughout the seasons, that also welcomes the birds, bees and butterflies. We replaced and expanded the patio outside the home's sliding doors to provide more space for dining and entertaining. Full-range bluestone was selected for its warm and cool tones for the patio, stairs and the long curvaceous pathway that leads to a smaller patio. Shaded by the majestic oak tree, this patio at the back of the property is another welcoming destination for peaceful relaxation. It is boarded by a stone seat wall constructed with "Rocky Mountain Gold Glacier" natural stone that provides additional seating, functionality and compliments the bluestone beautifully. "Granitecrete" (a material similar to Decomposed Granite) was chosen as the surface for other pathways and a small area designed to include a bench and a curved trellis with a lowering vine. It also surrounds the dramatic tall planters with Kumquat trees, and the stately water feature. A variety of Mediterranean plants and grasses fill the garden with movement texture and fragrance, designed in shades of green, gray, purple and white. A low-water Kurapia ground surrounds the main pathway pavers.

I wanted to make a big impact in a small space so creating a gallery wall not only helped to add color to the space, but also in moving the eye along the whole length of the room.

Dakin has been working with the owners of this site realize their dream of cultivating a rich and meaningful landscape around their home. Because of their deep engagement with their land and garden, the landscape has guided the entire design process, from architecture to civil engineering to landscape design. All architecture on site is oriented toward the garden, a park-like, multi-use environment that includes a walking labyrinth, restored prairie, a Japanese garden, an orchard, vegetable beds, berry brambles, a croquet lawn and a charred wood outdoor shower. Dakin pays special attention to materials at every turn, selecting an antique sugar bowl for the outdoor fire pit, antique Japanese roof tiles to create blue edging, and stepping stones imported from India. In addition to its diversity of garden types, this permacultural paradise is home to chickens, ducks, and bees. A complex irrigation system was designed to draw alternately from wells and cisterns. Dakin has also had the privilege of creating an arboretum of diverse and rare trees that she based on Olmsted’s design for Central Park. Trees were selected to display a variety of seasonally shifting delights: spring blooms, fall berries, winter branch structure. Mature trees onsite were preserved and sometimes moved to new locations.
