The Clients requested a major end-to-end renovation involving adding a 3rd floor loft, expanding the home’s footprint, and redesigning every room. No strangers to remodeling, the new owners of this St. Paul tudor knew they could update this decrepit 1920 duplex into a single-family forever home. A list of desired amenities was a catalyst for turning a bedroom into a large mudroom, an open kitchen space where their large family can gather, an additional exterior door for direct access to a patio, two home offices, an additional laundry room central to bedrooms, and a large master bathroom. As for the aesthetic, this was inspired by a deep appreciation for the durability, colors, textures and simplicity of Norwegian design. The home’s light paint colors set a positive tone. An abundance of tile creates character. New lighting reflecting the home’s original design is mixed with simplistic modern lighting. To pay homage to the original character several light fixtures were reused, wallpaper was repurposed at a ceiling, the chimney was exposed, and a new coffered ceiling was created. Not very big, however a very helpful item of furniture. When you place it next to your desk, it can be used as a cabinet for example for your bits and pieces, documents and drawings. Placing it next to your bed it will change into bedside table. Thanks to back wheels installed and its small size, the item of furniture is very mobile and also very practical. My parents were using their attached garage as an artist studio and there were a couple of problems. The first was that the prevailing westerly winds were blowing dust into the space around the edges of the garage door which ended up covering all the surfaces and contaminating their paints. This second problem was that the wind infiltration made the space uncomfortable at both the height of summer and the cold of winter. Once we settled on a design I used Revit to create the documents necessary for permitting purposes.
