The designer’s at Betz recommended excavating a section across the back of the home to create a sunken outdoor living room sheltered by an elevated and fully waterproofed Ipe hardwood deck. A window on the lower level was replaced with a new basement walkout providing access to an indoor washroom/change room.

The focal point of the backyard is the 16’ x 36’ vinyl pool surrounded by a large patio of architectural stamped concrete. On the opposite side of the pool, there is a large section of matching Ipe hardwood deck which comfortably accommodates four chaise lounges. That section is designed to simulate the look of a waterside dock.

Design ideas for a traditional landscaping in Toronto.

The outdoor living room is beautifully sheltered for three-season use. In the heat of summer, it offers a shady retreat, and during the spring and fall, it’s tucked away from the wind and warmed by the glow of the Napoleon outdoor gas fireplace. What a prefect place to curl up with a blanket and watch the game.

The upper level Ipe hardwood deck off the kitchen walkout conveniently features a natural gas barbecue station and dining table that accommodates eight. The glass railings provide an unencumbered view of the pool and yard. The pool features a custom full width underwater bench across the deep end for bather lounging.

Conveniently located beside the basement walkout, the custom 6’ x 6’ 4” vinyl over steel hot tub is fully winterized for year-round use. At night the reflection from blue/grey pebble vinyl liner casts a beautiful indigo glow. During the pool season it’s easy to dash back and forth between the pool and hot tub.

Quality materials are often not evident at first glance, but they prove their worth as they stand the test of time. For example, a clear cedar tongue and groove ceiling would be something a true perfectionist would notice. Whether a large group or an intimate family gathering, this outdoor living room radiates a welcoming warmth.
