This is a 12 x 20 foot dorm room for Art students at SCAD in Savannah, Ga. The original room had VCT tile floors, 2 twin beds, 2 dressers, 2 drafting tables, white textured walls and ceilings, a bath counter area/clothes rod and private toilet/tub. It was originally a motel room.

Bari, the client’s youngest daughter, has always been very creative so her mother and I wanted to work with her to create a space where she could fully and unapologetically be herself! Everything was removed from the space including the carpet tiles and the walls were painted white. She wanted a clean industrial-style space so we had a whole wall dedicated to sketches and doodles (the wall is white chalk paint). We also had a custom life-size pegboard custom made with adjustable peg shelves for her ever-changing needs. The 86x46 drafting table with a zink top and swivel stools was custom-made by a carpenter in Georgia. Personal touches were a must so pieces of Bari's art were framed in white for inspiration. The 1950's easel was found by her mother on Etsy and the tv logos were hand-painted by a local artist for her “chill zone”.

These clients were in the process of retiring to Southern Oregon from the San Francisco Bay Area - the husband was retired and the wife had several years left to work - and were commuting to Grants Pass for holidays and long weekends. This room was empty when we met. Window Coverings (Hunter Douglas) were the first priority. Furnishings came piece by piece and arranging them as they appeared was next. My antique drafting table, Steelcase file cabinets and custom bookshelves are handsome enough to be in a dining room, which they often are! This multi-purpose room is used all day as my design studio and conference room. At night, it often turns into a dining space where I serve up gourmet grub to friends. The ceilings soar to 15' at the window wall leaving the room awash in daylight and displaying a spectacular, private view of the ravine. Photography by Norman Sizemore
