Upon entering the great room, the view of the beautiful Minnehaha Creek can be seen in the banks of picture windows. The former great room was traditional and set with dark wood that our homeowners hoped to lighten. We softened everything by taking the existing fireplace out and creating a transitional great stone wall for both the modern simplistic fireplace and the TV. Two seamless bookcases were designed to blend in with all the woodwork on either end of the fireplace and give flexibly to display special and meaningful pieces from our homeowners’ travels. Location: New York, NY, USA We loved renovating this space for our client who is a Chef and wanted a functional kitchen that is also beautiful. Her previous kitchen had been purchased at a Restaurant Supply Store on the Lower East Side and though totally functional it was just not highlighting the natural beauty of the apartment. We were able to use the existing beams and brick walls as an amazing back-drop to the kitchen. We added decorative lighting to the Kitchen and Dining Areas to define those spaces and changed the track heads throughout the apartment to modernize the lighting. We also built her a new Home Office enclosure to be more in keeping with the loft environment - a little jewel box in the apartment. Overall, a total success!! Photographed by: James Salomon

The floor to ceiling windows provide a wealth of natural light in to the home. This Piedmont family decided to transform their basement by replacing the existing drop ceiling with a sleek sheetrock ceiling. The project involved installing less utilitarian lighting and HVAC vents as well as revamping the small kitchen area. The black and white hexagon backsplash makes a dramatic statement. The sleek faucet, new hardware and paint complete the look. The end result is a cozy and inviting family room.

A PLACE TO GATHER Location: Eagan, MN, USA This family of five wanted an inviting space to gather with family and friends. Mom, the primary cook, wanted a large island with more organized storage – everything in its place – and a crisp white kitchen with the character of an older home. Challenges: Design an island that could accommodate this family of five for casual weeknight dinners. Create more usable storage within the existing kitchen footprint. Design a better transition between the upper cabinets on the 8-foot sink wall and the adjoining 9-foot cooktop wall. Make room for more counter space around the cooktop. It was poorly lit, cluttered with small appliances and confined by the tall oven cabinet. Solutions: A large island, that seats 5 comfortably, replaced the small island and kitchen table. This allowed for more storage including cookbook shelves, a heavy-duty roll out shelf for the mixer, a 2-bin recycling center and a bread drawer. Tall pantries with decorative grilles were placed between the kitchen and family room. These created ample storage and helped define each room, making each one feel larger, yet more intimate. A space intentionally separates the upper cabinets on the sink wall from those on the cooktop wall. This created symmetry on the sink wall and made room for an appliance garage, which keeps the countertops uncluttered. Moving the double ovens to the former pantry location made way for more usable counter space around the cooktop and a dramatic focal point with the hood, cabinets and marble backsplash. Special Features: Custom designed corbels and island legs lend character. Gilt open lanterns, antiqued nickel grilles on the pantries, and the soft linen shade at the kitchen sink add personality and charm. The unique bronze hardware with a living finish creates the patina of an older home. A walnut island countertop adds the warmth and feel of a kitchen table. This homeowner truly understood the idea of living with the patina of marble. Her grandmother’s marble-topped antique table inspired the Carrara countertops. This beautiful light filled dining room is graced by two large glass icicle chandeliers and a metallic cork wallpapered ceiling. Custom drapery flanks both sides of the oval dining room, while a custom Alex Turco art piece echoes all of the neutral colors in the room. The dining room is both opulent and inviting, offering a beautiful space for hours of dining and conversation.
