Minimal, white shaker cabinets brighten the room and help to solidify that mid-century modern feel my clients were seeking. However, my clients’ personality and that of the space shines through in the subway tiles’ pop of color. OK – maybe it’s a little more than a pop of color, but it takes this kitchen to the next level. The shiny, blue tile is an unexpected move that completely transforms this space. Material choice in this project had more of a significance because the kitchen’s shape and size didn’t change and was still rather confined. Few opportunities come about to design/ renovate a home designed by St Paul’s own Clarence H. Johnston. 785 Dayton, is the only known residential Greek Revival commission by Minnesota’s most prolific architect. Johnston, designed at least 42 mansions along St. Paul’s Historic Summit Avenue. Looking for additional assistance, the new homeowner’s found Castle to help them design and renovate a main floor ½ bath and create a new master bathroom in the existing 2nd floor master bedroom. Creating spaces that married with the original style and aesthetic of this historic home was essential. The brand new 2nd floor master bathroom was designed to complement an additional bathroom across the hallway. Taking an existing closet space, Castle was able to use the very small square footage to create a new bathroom that feels very spacious! New Carrera marble hex tiles floors were selected with a marble boarder to pair with the restored and hand-picked marble sink. Traditional subway tile was installed around the room and shower with a beautiful chair rail tile. The new linen closet was custom built by the homeowner’s personal cabinet maker. The storage was designed to match an original piece in the home, as well as provide function for the space. All of the details matter; push button electrical switching, new historically designed porcelain bath accessories by Rejuvenation Hardware, historically designed plumbing fixtures, solid marble shower curb and door threshold, salvaging the original closet door to be installed as a new pocket door, and salvaging the existing window. Both bathrooms will be enjoyed for many generations to come and add to the beautiful history of the home. This home was a true joy for Castle to be a part of. Project Details: Take a moment to explore this gorgeous exterior makeover by Chattanooga Exteriors. We used Iron Gray James Hardie Straight Shake Siding, Arctic White Trim, Tongue and Groove porch ceiling with Provincial Stain, as well as Rams Crown on the Window Headers. This exterior spiral staircase was fabricated in 1 piece. It has a double top rail, decorative pickets, 4" outer diameter center pole fastened to a concrete caisson. The finish is a copper vein exterior powder coat to be able to withstand the unpredictable Colorado weather.

This Transitional -Whimsical bathroom remodel is simplified by the natural stain used for the vanity. Taking the glass backsplash 3 tiles high minimum, helps this bathroom to feel larger. 10x10 black hex tiles surround the tub, Food for thought; when using any glass tile, thinset must be white. Whatever color goes behind the glass, will show through. Also, keeping a 1/16 grout line, when installing most tiles, increases the visual longevity of a space. Larger grout lines are typically not built for visual longevity, unless used in brick install.

Before & After pictures of a 11-16′ pond with a 20′ stream in Lancaster. The pictures of the pond are from start to finish, showing some of the excavation and steps it takes to build a pond. We added a few Koi, some aquatic plants, and mulch to soften up the project. There is also a large fish cave installed in the bottom shelve to help protect the koi from predators. The murky pond water had not yet cleared up, and is just a result of dirt from the natural boulders. There is a fish and plant safe flocculant by Aquascape you can use to help this process.

These wonderful homeowners contacted Castle in NEED of a new kitchen. The old kitchen was falling apart. After years of making it work, they finally decided to take the next steps, so they could love their home again. After seeing the home and discussing the family’s needs, we decided the best kitchen for them would include opening the kitchen up into the dining room for better work flow within the kitchen space. The homeowners had no idea their kitchen could feel so large without an addition! It was a joy to show them their homes potential. The new kitchen includes a balance of the existing homes finishes along with some more contemporary updates. New custom designed cabinetry, granite countertops, subway tile backsplash, new appliances, new lighting, new luxury vinyl Adura tile flooring, new millwork to match existing, and a new back door complete the kitchen. Castle’s favorite part of the kitchen are the Kashmir Pearl granite countertops. The granite has a splash of plum color that really draws your eye in when you look closely and matches nicely with the homes original dark millwork. The homeowners favorite feature was the floors! Luxury vinyl is a great alternative to a tile floor for a nice aesthetic that also isn’t so hard on your feet. The homeowners could not be happier with their new space.

The homeowners of this 1906 home in East Harriet are returning customers of Castle. They remodeled their hallway bath style a few years ago with a similar vintage; which went viral via Houzz. After seeing the home and space we had to work with, the designer and homeowners decided an en suite would bring the biggest return of enjoyment and return on investment. By taking an existing dressing room, we were able to make this happen. We relocated the original hall bedroom entry into the new dressing room space. We were able to create a really beautiful entry to both the bedroom and the new master bath as well as a new more appropriately sized dressing space. We were able to salvage the original bedroom and bath doors to be reinstalled at new locations, and then new French doors were installed for a grand entry into the bedroom. By having the glass French doors between the bedroom, new dressing room/en suite entry and bath, the bedroom now has a 2nd source of natural lighting. For this new bathroom, we wanted to create a similar vintage feel to coordinate with the hallway bath. A new clawfoot tub was installed with vintage inspired shower and curtain rod, a salvaged cast iron radiator, new built-in storage at the attic knee wall, new vanity with carrara marble counters, and to complete the space 1” hex tile floor and beautiful millwork to match the original style in the home. The homeowners are incredibly happy with their new space and proud to have a Minneapolis home with an en suite!

Take a look at this beautiful renovation! We resided this home using James Hardie Iron Gray Straight Shake and Lap Siding as well as Arctic White Trim. We also trimmed out the windows using Rams Crown, freshened up the front porch ceiling with tongue and groove, rebuilt the deck using pressure treated wood, and completely refinished the screened-in porch using our white aluminum screen system and a white tongue and groove ceiling.

This Backyard Waterfall project included installation of a pondless waterfall approximately 15' in length on a sloped bank at the area next to the existing pool. The backyard waterfall cascades down the existing embankment. There is still retaining wall work in progress as of this video and pictures being shot. Future landscaping will be installed once surrounding hardscaping has been complete. Rocks and Boulders for this project were chosen and supplied by home owner. This pondless waterfall project was installed in Mohnton (Berks County), PA. Pondless Waterfalls are simply a re-circulating waterfall and/or stream without the presence of a pond. You can enjoy the sight and sound of running water without the maintenance of a pond. The waterfall is undoubtedly the most beautiful and favored feature in a water garden. If space is lacking in your yard or you have safety concerns with a pond, go Pondless! The name basically explains it all. It’s a waterfall and stream, without the pond. So why would you want a waterfall without a pond? The truth is that a Pondless Waterfall isn’t for everyone, but it can be a great alternative for someone who isn’t quite sure if a pond is right for their family. Because there is no pool of water, a Pondless Waterfall is a great option if you are concerned about safety issues associated with a traditional pond. Cost can be a big factor when considering the type of pond you want to build. In most cases, the price of a Pondless waterfall will be less than a pond, because there is less labor involved, as well as less rock and materials. Operating costs are also less. Because you’re not dealing with an established ecosystem, it’s not necessary to run the pump 24/7. The small size of the Pondless Waterfall means you can build and enjoy a beautiful waterfall anywhere in you yard. Taking care of your Pondless Waterfall is easy. Filling the reservoir every few weeks to compensate for water loss because of evaporation is all that’s required. Perhaps the best part of the Pondless Waterfall is the possibility for the future. If you change your mind later, wishing you’d build a pond, that’s ok! If you leave enough room around the base of the waterfall, it’s easy to add a pond onto a Pondless Waterfall. A Pondless Waterfall works much like a regular pond. The hole, deeper than a normal pond, is dug then lined with rock and gravel, and filled with water. The water is then circulated from beneath the rocks and gravel by a pump that sits on the bottom, inside a Snorkel™ Vault and Centipede™ Module. A pipe runs from there up to a BioFalls Filter and into an overflowing waterfall, where it falls back into the reservoir. Since the water level never pools above the level of the rock and gravel fill, it give the appearance of a waterfall without a pond, when in fact, the “pond” is there but not visible. The Pondless Waterfall has made many water-lovers who were previously unable to indulge in the sweet sounds of falling water, very happy. It’s a great alternative for those who are trying to get their feet wet, or looking to fit a little bit of paradise into their own backyard. In other words, when all else fails … go Pondless!

Who’s ready for some Outdoor Adventures???? Summer is FINALLY here even though it rains every single day here in Lancaster County :(. No need to fret though, because when the sun is shining this backyard will be full of life. I mean what more could you possibly ask for? This AMAZING outdoor living space in Quarryville, PA was just recently completed. The project included the installation of paver pool decking, boulder retaining walls, irregular natural stone steps, and hidden sliding board mound. surrounding the pool and paver patio we installed new plantings, mulch beds, decorative river gravel beds, flagstone walkways, landscape lighting, fine grading, seeding, and erosion control to dress up all the disturbed areas. I don’t know about you but I’m ready to take a trip down that sliding board…………..
