Inspiration for a mid-sized modern white three-story stucco exterior home remodel in Los Angeles

This home is located on a one acre parcel of land near the banks of the Milwaukee River in the older established subdivision of Sleepy Hollow Estates in Mequon, Wisconsin. The inspiration for this Glen Cove Residence was to bring the desired by many, contemporary and modern lifestyle of a down town loft and establish it in a neighborhood in the suburbs amongst traditional style homes. Sleepy Hollow Estates like many older established neighborhoods throughout the North shore and Westside communities of Milwaukee had great local architects such as John Randall McDonald and Russell Barr Williamson, who built contemporary master pieces amongst very traditional style homes. This created diversity in the style of homes in these neighborhoods which for the people living in them and the people just passing by, an experience of harmony and cultural lifestyle. Unfortunately today, many new neighborhood developments lack harmony and cultural lifestyle and don’t allow for homes such as this Glen Cove Residence to be built. And for that matter many of the homes built by John Randall McDonald and Russell Barr Williamson back in the 1950’s. When driving through these new developments, one would experience beautiful traditional style homes, but all the homes tend to look the same. There is no diversity in the styles of homes thus these neighborhoods lack the harmony and a cultural life style for the people who live there or what people are looking for when buying a home that reflects their lifestyle. This Glen Cove Residence is an example that a contemporary home which offers a modern lifestyle that many desires can be established amongst traditional homes while blending in with the neighborhood. Don’t be fooled by the flat roof of this home, building technology has come a long way since Frank Lloyd Wright! The roof system on this home is more energy efficient than most roof systems builders are putting on traditional homes today and it doesn’t leak! This Glen Cove Residence was built using all traditional building materials that you would see in homes being built in new developments today. There is a misconception out there that modern homes are expensive to build. That is not true! This Glen Cove Residence was built for roughly $130 per square foot which is the same price one would pay for a similar builder’s model traditional style home with the same upgrades. This Glen Cove Residence consists of three bedrooms and three and one half baths. All bedrooms are located on second floor with laundry, guest bath and a master suite. Located between the first and second floors off of the landing is an office/den space. The first floor is open concept with the kitchen, dining and living areas located at the rear of the home with expansive windows allowing a great connection to back yard area and outdoors. On the back of the home is a covered deck area allowing for outdoor entertaining without the worry of the elements. The first floor also offers a powder room, mudroom and walk-in pantry off the kitchen area. From the mudroom there is access to an attached four car tandem garage. From the first floor to the finished basement is an open stair allowing the basement area to feel as part of the house and not just a basement? The basement consists of a main living area, game area with wet bar, exercise room, kids play room with 14’ ceilings, full bathroom and mechanical room with storage closets throughout.

The terracotta-painted wood feature wall and the stone fireplace were both relatively cost-effective updates but they made a huge impact to the overall design look and feel. We replaced the original fireplace hearth with a long linear stone bench to add more entertaining functionality, such as seating and room for the homeowner's record collection. The original ceiling was an orange-pine so we replaced it with a white oak that spans the whole ceiling, elongating the room and making it feel more spacious.

A photographic record of the space before the implementation of the interior design concept. At this stage, the interior consists of exposed concrete structures, brickwork, metal elements, and an unfinished pool basin. Despite its raw construction appearance, the space already reveals its generous height, panoramic glazing, multi-level geometry, and potential to become a striking private pool area. This initial condition marked the beginning of the design process inspired by contemporary Miami luxury.

ELIMINATING ECHOS IN A LUXURY POOL HOUSE Innovative & Unobtrusive Acoustic Treatments Engaged By WSDG-Brasil BELO HORIZONTE, BRASIL: How do you keep your pool house from reverberating like a gymnasium? For the owners of a luxurious villa set amidst of one of Brasil’s most breathtaking landscapes, the views and the pastoral silence were priceless. A wide expanse of windows surrounding the infinite lap pool draw attention to the spectacular mountains and gardens framing this opulent weekend residence. Intrusive echoes of laughter and music were unacceptable. The critical acoustical designs devised by WSDG Brasil for the villa’s home theater and other living spaces were inspired by the firms’ professional recording studio expertise. Inhibiting sound from invading or escaping sensitive listening areas is a WSDG specialty. The enclosed pool and spa area, however presented uniquely troubling waters. Especially challenging was the requirement that the acoustical treatments unobtrusively compliment the sumptuous custom finishes. In addition to the 46’ long, 10’ wide lap pool, the 2100 sq. ft structure includes a gym, Jacuzzi and wet bar, bounded by three walls of double height windows. A movable glass sealing system was installed to maintain interior warmth during the cool, mountain region evenings. Prognosis? Warm, but noisy. Here, professional recording studio design techniques provided solutions. Each window, including an expansive skylight grid comprised of 24 individual 7’x5’motorized Italian glass panels, was fitted with two layers of Clearsorber™ Foil special micro-perforated transparent foil with 1” of air space separating the layers. Mounting the foil layers 2” below the glass skylight insured optimal sound absorption. Developed in Germany, these innovative translucent plastic sheets absorb medium and high frequency reverberation to resolve sonic reflection issues. “We have hung panels of this material in front of glass windows in recording studios,” explains WSDG Brasil, GM Renato Cipriano. “They have proved very effective in helping us ‘tune’ rooms without obstructing views. Now they are proving equally helpful in this residential application.” The foil’s full transparency insures unimpeded views and eliminates traditional pool house reverberation. Happily, the product also serves as a UV ray filtering system. Cipriano reports that special attention was also devoted to the pool house floor which is situated over a large machine room. “A number of generators, pumps and air conditioning units live beneath the pool,” he says. “Thanks to our acoustic treatments, they hum away doing their jobs without making their presence known to the guests.” Morro do Chapeau was designed by celebrated Brasilian architect Eduarda Correa. The extensive A/V installation was designed and installed by Versao Brasileira, a leading Belo Horizonte-based high-end home theater specialist. “We have participated on a number of challenging projects with Versao Brasileira,” Cipriano concludes. “They are extremely knowledgeable and we welcome the opportunity to collaborated with them.” ### Photos: Five views of the Morro do Chapeau pool house in Belo Horizonte, Brasil. This is an organic Lime Wash done with a true lime wash product as opposed to a brick mortar or concrete that is often seen on new houses. This product can be applied as a solid coating making the surface completely white, or can be applied and "washed off" in many artistic ways, as seen here. The homeowner of this 1970’s Mid-Century Modern home in St. Paul was seeking a space that would function efficiently for their family of 3. Their old 70’s kitchen was truly falling apart and there were almost no countertops to utilize the space effectively. The old kitchen was too closed in and tight and lacked the proper work zones. It was important to the client to have durable finishes and to create an updated aesthetic that married the original homes style. We demoed a wall from kitchen to hallway to back sunroom to help open up the space. However, we kept the beautiful fireplace and brick wall and used this as a new feature wall in the kitchen for cabinets and floating shelves. We also added pop-up outlets here so we could meet code and not have to drill through pretty original brick. The overall space achieved the Mid-Century and Scandinavian Modern look by including minimal finishes, crisp lines and pops of color texture. For example, in the dining room, we kept one corner cabinet and painted a bright green for a pop of color to bring the Scandinavian mod style into the room. The aesthetic is enhanced with light-stained frameless cherry cabinetry from Crystal cabinets, a chevron tile backsplash, and beautiful Silestone quartz countertops. To bring their kitchen up to date, we updated all electrical and HVAC with a new a new range hood. The client chose sustainable Adura luxury vinyl plank flooring in both the kitchen and dining room. To round out the remodel, we installed new custom modern iron railings by Loftus Iron at the stairwell. Personal touches are found throughout the new space with the homeowner’s travel collections and records proudly displayed on the floating shelves. Overall, the clients were so happy to have this great kitchen for when the 2020 pandemic hit and cooking ALL meals at home in conjunction to learning to work and attend school from home for their family. They couldn’t be happier.
