The home’s understated elegance privileges comfort and vertical space. To this end, the 5-bed, 7-bath (counting halves) home has a 4-stop elevator and a basement theater with tiered seating and 13-foot ceilings. A third story porch is separated from the upstairs living area by a glass wall that disappears as desired, and its stone fireplace ensures that this panoramic ocean view can be enjoyed year-round. This house is full of gorgeous materials, including a kitchen backsplash of Calacatta marble, mined from the Apuan mountains of Italy, and countertops of polished porcelain. The curved antique French limestone fireplace in the living room is a true statement piece, and the basement includes a temperature-controlled glass room-within-a-room for an aesthetic but functional take on wine storage. The takeaway? Efficiency and beauty are two sides of the same coin.

The new and expansive chef’s kitchen showcases custom cabinetry, a three-tiered curved African mahogany and walnut island with Pietra Gray stone top and a statement chandelier, an ode to the home’s art deco roots. Classic white subway backsplash and white Carrara marble countertops line the perimeter and nod to the style of the homeowner’s restaurants. And the real showstopper? The husband, an avid chef, requested the kitchen be a joyful space that supported his love of cooking. High ceilings, an open floor plan, and new hardware create a warm, comfortable atmosphere. With the concept that “less is more,” we focused on the orientation of each room and the introduction of clean-lined furnishings to highlight the view rather than the decor, while statement lighting, pillows, and textures added a punch to each space.

Located in the heart of Carnegie Hill, this Upper East Side Townhouse was a full gut renovation for DHD Architecture and Interiors. Throughout the home, a combination of vintage furniture and lighting was mixed with new modern classics to give the rooms an elegant and carefully curated feel. Wallpaper, fabrics, and colors play together in layers, so the formal structure and setting of the home is balanced with varying palettes, contemporary prints, and textured materials. Our favorite elements include the office’s statement making malachite wallpaper, and the master bedroom’s vintage sputnik chandelier that hangs over a walnut four poster bed. Classical millwork details are present throughout the home. In the family dining area you can see it present in the curved built-in bench, windows, and wood paneled walls and ceiling.

The family often entertains large parties and also needed space for their family of seven to gather. This eating area is open to the kitchen as well as the family room allowing great traffic flow throughout the home. Custom gothic-inspired cabinet doors on the bar cabinetry make a statement within the space.
