This remodel of a midcentury home by Garret Cord Werner Architects & Interior Designers is an embrace of nostalgic ‘50s architecture and incorporation of elegant interiors. On warm summer evenings the elevated dining deck is the perfect spot to let the beauty of the backyard create a mood of tranquility. The upright posture of the European Hornbeams along the fence lends a feeling of order. As they grow and fill in, they will add an additional level of privacy each year.

The elevation of the yard drops off sharply in the back corner, so a V-shaped, three-foot-high concrete retaining wall was installed. Backfill from the pool excavation was used to raise the level of the yard This was necessary so the swim lane would sit at the same level as the pool across the full width.

This elevated view of the yard illustrates how the clean lines of a geometric design can help to make a compact area look more spacious. It also shows how the low maintenance plantings around the perimeter help to soften the hardscapes. The row of low hostas aids in hiding the gravel bed below the elevated deck.

After dark the yard springs to life warmly lit by the array of garden lights around the perimeter plus the lights from the cabana and pool. The pool and spa’s colour changing lighting system can be set to a single colour or changing rainbow of colours.
