Combining Form and Function of Wine Cellar
In collaboration with Chicago based interior designers, Stones Throw Interiors, we were able to provide a speak-easy style wine cellar in a beautiful Chicago high-rise. We combined our expertise and design skills with lead designer, Lonnie Unger, to create this one-of-a-kind experience for our customer. From the wine cellar door and custom wine racks, to the cooling system, we were able to utilize all of our products to their highest potential. Our expertise relies heavily on custom design, so we were delighted to be brought on to this project to showcase our abilities. We are able to build our products to fit any space limitation. Luckily for us, our client had a space with 14′ high ceilings and wanted to utilize as much of the space as possible.
Custom Wine Racking Designs
We used a classic crossed shelving design that is consistent with the ‘old-world’ speakeasy era. The use of dark Mahogany wood was ideal for this moody and dramatic wine cellar. Keeping with traditional styles, we stuck to our classic X racking technique from top to bottom. This style of racking is consistent with the era that the rest of the project was emulating.
Custom Wine Cellar Cooling System
One detail that is crucial to the project, is the temperature controlled cooling system. Wine is strongly encouraged to be kept at a strict 55 degrees in order to stay preserved. For collectors, this feature is crucial to maintaining and prolonging the life of each bottle. With such an extensive wine collection, preservation was a top priority while working on this project. Our goal was to ensure that this collection would withstand the test of time. Function and form are fused together with this classic speak-easy style wine cellar. We love working with designers and our clients to create timeless products that are reputable in their appearance and purpose.

Sleek and chic. In terms of high-impact, going with a dark wire-brush pattern is a sure way to quickly define a space. Never boring, this modern pattern will set the mood immediately.
The most important specification for determining the durability of vinyl flooring is the thickness of the wear-layer. The best wear-layers are made of thick, clear virgin PVC, which covers the paper print-film that gives the floor its unique appearance. Once the wear-layer wears through, the paper is damaged and the floor will need replacement.
Most vinyl floors come with a 8-12 mil wear-layer (0.2-3 mm). The top commercial specs in the industry are higher, at 20-22 mil (0.5 mm). A select few manufacturers offer a “super” commercial spec of 28 mil (0.7 mm).
For Modin, we decided to set a new standard: 40 mil (1.0 mm) of premium virgin PVC. This allows us to offer an industry-leading 20 year Commercial Warranty (Lifetime Residential), compared to nearly all other commercial vinyl floors’ 10 year Commercial Warranty.
Beyond our superior wear-layer, we also use a patented click mechanism for superior hold, and a ceramic-bead coating.
SIZE MATTERS
Wider and longer planks create a sense of space and luxury. Most vinyl floors come in 6” or 7” widths, and 36” or 48” lengths.
For Modin, we designed our planks to be 9” wide, and 60” long. This extra large size allows our gorgeous designs to be fully expressed.
DETAILS THAT COUNT
We made sure to get all the details right. Real texture, to create the feel of wire-brushed wood. Low sheen level, to ensure a natural look that wears well over time. 4-sided bevels, to more accurately emulate the look of real planks. When added together they help create the unique look that is Modin.
DESIGNS THAT INSPIRE
We spent nearly a year just focusing on our designs, to ensure they provide the right mix of color and depth. Focusing on timeless wire-brush and European Oak styles, as well as more contemporary modern washes, our collection offers truly beautiful design that is both functional and inspiring.

High rustic. We designed Imber to have the brown and red tones of more rustic spaces, but left out the big knots and cracks. This allows it to play nicely with a range of spaces.

Over time, a well-loved painted furniture piece will show distinctive signs of wear and use. Each chip and dent tells a story of its history through layers of paint. With its beautifully aged surface and chipped edges, Dura Supreme’s Heritage Paint collection is designed to resemble a cherished family heirloom.
Dura Supreme artisans hand-detail the surface to create the look of time worn distressing. Finishes are layered to emulate the look of furniture that has been refinished over the years. A layer of stain is covered with a layer of paint with special effects to age the surface. The paint is then chipped away along corners and edges to create, the signature look of Heritage Paint.
Dura Supreme’s Heritage Paint collection, of finishes can be selected on Maple for a smooth surface or Knotty Alder for a more rugged, rustic look. A beautiful palette of soft muted colors is available on any of our raised or flat panel door styles to create the perfect focal point for your home.

Natural Oak. There are times and places where the simple, clean look of natural oak is all that is needed. Parkhurst captures a natural oak pattern, in what might be called a “classic grade” (not too much character, but some color variation).

Our clients bought two adjacent rowhomes as investment properties, and we designed and completed a gut renovation of each property. Both homes have two units and near-identical floor plans; a 2-bedroom, 2 bath unit in the basement and a larger “primary” unit with 5 bedrooms and 3 ½ baths taking up the top three floors. This project includes a 3rd-floor addition and a rear addition across the back.
This gut remodel creates contemporary living on the bustling 13th street corridor in the sought-after Columbia Heights neighborhood. Light and airy finishes were used throughout.
The first floor has an open concept floor plan with a modern European-style kitchen, white oak hardwood flooring, and luxurious finishes. The clients selected all-electric appliances for greater energy efficiency. The waterfall edge quartz countertop kitchen island features an overhang with bar seating and a chef’s sink. The kitchen cabinets are soft-close with glossy white acrylic uppers and custom teak graining lowers. Large French doors lead from the kitchen to the private rear wood deck, enabling indoor-outdoor living. Additionally, the main floor has a covered patio at the front entrance.
The second and third floors have light and clean bathroom designs and spacious bedrooms with plenty of storage. The bathrooms were designed to emulate a classic luxury style while maintaining easy-to-clean and versatile features, while maximizing a tight space. There is ample natural lighting throughout each property, often a challenge in rowhomes.

Rich, luxurious, refined. A deep tone punctuated by a slight bleached wire-brush. Barin will lift any space, and can live up to the highest design requirements.

M-S Pro Architects announce the completion of an indoor swimming pool in a state-of-the-art, single storey family home set in a picturesque location on the outskirts of Bratislava - one of Europe’s youngest capital cities. Kebony, a beautiful wood recommended by leading architects, was chosen to craft the ceiling of the swimming pool, which is designed to emulate rippling waves as well as for the terrace deck and structural beams.
Sustainability and a desire to recreate the close proximity often seen between wood and water in the natural environment were primary focuses in the design of this project. This led a requirement for a low maintenance wood, compatible humidity and with advanced durability, for the swimming pool ceiling. In addition, a high level of precision when cutting the wood was required in order to achieve the desired appearance of waves.
Supplied by Leading Market, Kebony was carefully selected for the pool ceiling, which consists of 490 lamellae of timber, due to its versatility, durability and environmental credentials. Kebony was also installed throughout the exterior of this property, both for the spacious outdoor terrace and the exterior and interior beams. One of the reasons to choose Kebony was the unified look of wood in all these different applications.
Developed in Norway, the patented Kebony technology uses an environmentally friendly process, which permanently enhances the properties of sustainable softwood with a bio-based liquid derived from agricultural crop waste. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall with furfuryl alcohol, the wood gains greatly improved durability and dimensional stability, giving it characteristics similar to those of tropical hardwood. In creating a wood with comparable properties to tropical hardwood that can be grown in a FSC certified, sustainably managed forest, the demand for tropical woods is reduced, allowing timber to once again be an important part of sustainable construction.
Tomáš Hubinský, Lead Architect at M-S Pro, commented: “From conception through to completion, the creation of this ceiling has been a real feat. Despite the challenges faced by such an intricate design, Kebony was the perfect material to convey our desired effect of waves rippling along the ceiling. We will continue to incorporate Kebony into our interior and exterior designs, with wood fast becoming the first choice material for all architects.”
Mette Valen, Sales Manager Norway at Kebony, explained: “The distinctive nature of this design cleverly portrays the capability of Kebony, demonstrating both the aesthetic and performance qualities of the product. We would be honoured to work with M-S Pro in the future and look forward to seeing how they utilise Kebony in their future projects.”

Built originally in the late 1800's, and lived in by only two families, this gem of a historic mansion was in need of a lot of work.
The goal of this project was to add central air, renovate and expand 3-1/2 baths, add one bath, add a 2nd level laundry, replace old wall paper, and to combine a kitchen, breakfast room, laundry and butler's pantry into one large farmhouse style kitchen. We also added radiator covers, replaced kitchen flooring, added a mudroom, and added wainscot to the main stair. Finally, we upgraded all lighting and wiring throughout the house. We are about to start phase 2 of the project to restore the windows, new landscaping, painting and restoring the trim and siding for the house and restoring the roofing and flashing. We are also looking to add a side porch and deck.
The challenge of this project was to do all of this work, but to keep the soul and character of the house in tact. The owners loved the house as it was, so it was very important to keep and restore as much as possible.
In the rest of the house, the owners decided to just add tongue oil to the floors. Fireplaces were kept in tact. Original pine trim and millwork were restored and we added a window seat on the 3rd floor.
The further challenge was to do this work, including planning and all interior design in 4-1/2 months. By signing up Hyo Lee and his company Millennium Homes as our contractor from the beginning, we met the demanding schedule.
We looked back to the time period and selected finishes and details that seemed appropriate. The client built a large idea book on Houzz which helped throughout the project to make sure we could design to their style.
Bathrooms carry a theme of natural marble and stones.
The kitchen features an antique oak herringbone floor from Mountain Lumber. Cabinets are inset, with a small bead to emulate antiques in the owner's collection and to maintain the simple details of the existing Butler's Pantry cabinets which we kept and restored. Wallpaper selections were made by the client with help from Mona Berman Interiors.
We are very proud of how this team effort turned out and how the house is beaming with the new life of its upgrades, and new life from a new family moving in.

The smooth table top has a slightly extended top frame, which looks beautiful against the stunning detailing of the legs. The overall aesthetic is absolutely attractive.
The best part is that you can easily pair this solid wood dining table and chair set with any interior design style, be it contemporary, eclectic, traditional, or classical. However, it would evoke a truly holistic look when paired with the large sideboard from our Cromberg 12 Piece Dining Set.
