Following this, we proceeded to install sturdy cement footings to establish a reliable base for the new deck. The framework for the deck was meticulously crafted using robust 4x6 pressure-treated lumber, ensuring durability and stability. This Duvall, Washington custom outdoor living project brings together structure, comfort, and refined finishes to create a true year-round extension of the home. The deck was built using Castle Gate decking from the Landmark Collection, featuring mitered corners, picture-framed stairs, black flashing, and hidden fasteners for a seamless, high-end appearance. A surface-mounted black cable railing system with rounded top rails preserves clean sightlines while adding modern contrast. The space is fully protected by an undercover ceiling system with white smooth panels, integrated drainage, and 14 recessed white can lights for soft, even illumination. Comfort was further enhanced with four white 6k heaters, allowing the space to be enjoyed in all seasons. The outdoor kitchen was framed and finished with Dekton “Laurent” countertops, paired with thoughtful detailing to allow flexibility for future enhancements. Stone-wrapped columns using Bucks County Dressed Fieldstone add warmth and texture, while black Hideaway Hexx screens provide privacy and wind protection without sacrificing style. Designed with durability, functionality, and future expansion in mind, this project delivers a cohesive outdoor space built for entertaining, relaxing, and everyday living.

Design work started with a modest design focused on improving the kitchen, living, dining and outdoor living areas. However, a feasibility study determined that a better option was to fully remodel the existing dwelling, resulting in reclaiming some of the front veranda to increase the size of the living and dining areas. The remaining section created an alcove to the main bedroom, increasing privacy and creating a dedicated outdoor area. A large awning, cantilevered so as not to impose on the existing septic, created a separate outdoor living area. A teak facade, that will weather to grey in the salty sea air over time, was added to extend high above the box gutter, conceal the solar panels and cap the ends of the separation walls. The roof was repitched and the internal ceilings raked upwards from the teak facade, thereby increasing the internal volume and allowing for the addition of high-light windows in rooms on the ridge side of the dwelling to capture the vista, increase natural light, ventilation and sense of space. A skillion roof outside the back kitchen area was strategically positioned out of sight from the inside of the home and created a second outdoor area in the rear courtyard, serving as the main entry point. A gate house was incorporated in the rear fence to enhance the entry. The rear courtyard reclaimed an existing parking bay to create space for the cellar/music room.

The unique design concept of A139 is rooted in the basic geometric idea of two interlocking rectangles. This distinctive feature, along with the incorporation of rectangular geometries into the natural environment, sets it apart. The deliberate placement of a few windows in the front enhances privacy, while the addition of wooded and water elements to the facade creates a sober and elegant aesthetic. The project maintains a common language in its materiality: apparent concrete, steel, and wood. The three materials are presented sincerely from the outside of the house and continue on a constant journey through the interior. A139 is adjacent to the spring forest, privileged in its geographical position. We considered that the project’s purpose was that from any point of the house, we would have panoramic views that would serve as ambiance for itself and thus generate “natural pictures.” Our design philosophy for A139 was to seamlessly integrate the forest into the house. To achieve this, we created interior courtyards and spaces, blurring the boundary between the exterior and the interior. This approach not only enhances the living experience but also fosters a harmonious relationship with the natural surroundings. The house’s program is characterized by its social areas on the first floor, which can be combined to generate larger spaces if necessary. On the first floor are four bedrooms, each with a dressing room, bathroom, and terraces overlooking the spring forest. Casa A139 speaks for itself and presents itself honestly, subtly setting the views and ample spaces in the hierarchy by the natural textures of the materials.
