When they spoke about their modern Florida home, one could hear and see their enthusiasm and excitement to bring that simplicity into their new home. It became evident early on that their new space should be contemporary but the home’s exterior, as well as the neighboring community, had an old world, traditional charm. The goal was to avoid competing aesthetics while respecting both looks. The resulting interior design incorporated slab doors with both semi-gloss white lacquer and grey stain on horizontal grained oak. The rich dark oak base cabinets perfectly balanced the ceiling beams. The use of a stainless channel system, in place of traditional hardware, and the stainless toe kick completed the design. The Bertazzoni cooktop and wall ovens in stainless steel, Sub-Zero refrigeration paneled in white semi-gloss, and a stainless steel chimney hood enhanced the clean, uninterrupted lines. This farmhouse style home was already lovely and inviting. We just added some finishing touches in the kitchen and expanded and enhanced the basement. In the kitchen we enlarged the center island so that it is now five-feet-wide. We rebuilt the sides, added the cross-back, “x”, design to each end and installed new fixtures. For this kitchen design we wanted to have a variety of material and colour options to visually see what would work best for the style of home without having to put together multiple mood boards and wait for samples. The 3D renders used brought everything together quickly and in a form that was much more comprehensive and easy to understand how all the pieces worked together. We maximized the usability of the space with efficient storage solutions and added character with an antique farmhouse door to the pantry. Adding larger windows that extend to the ceiling added much needed light and opened the whole space up considerably. Wall sconces flanking the hood vent enhanced to crown moulding and provides visual interest.

This kitchen renovation project aimed to create a bright, airy, and functional space. The clients desired a kitchen that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also catered to their daily needs with ample storage and practical features. The kitchen features a classic in-frame shaker style in Chalk White, providing a timeless elegance that complements its surroundings. The 60mm white quartz worktop and matching splashback add a sleek, contemporary touch while ensuring durability and ease of maintenance. One of the key aspects of this kitchen is its open and light-filled ambience, achieved through bifold doors and a skylight. These elements flood the space with natural light, enhancing the sense of spaciousness. Understanding the importance of storage, the design incorporates ample cabinetry, as well as wooden open shelving for easy access to everyday items. The central island, with a built-in hob and seating area, serves as the focal point for family gatherings and social cooking. Equipped with high-quality Neff ovens and a range of modern appliances, the kitchen strikes the perfect balance between style and functionality.

CONTRACTORS: JD&E PHOTOGRAPHER: Dennis Marisco DESCRIPTION: The Cathedral Campus project is an exercise in campus place making, which created a new administrative and religious center for the Diocese of Wheeling/Charleston. An opportunity for a makeover emerged when the parish school was closed due to low enrollment. The final result combines selective demolition, adaptive reuse of historic structures, and strategic additions to establish a new religious place focused on the historic St. Joseph’s Cathedral. JURY COMMENTS: While in some ways this project seems very basic, it is deceptively so. Its details, materials, and spaces – both internal and external – are rich and sophisticated. The building is strong and very comfortable in its response at an urban scale, just as it is very successful at the detail scale. It demonstrates a great understanding of the campus by removing those parts that do not work and creating a beautiful courtyard that enhances all of the surrounding buildings. The glass and metal façade, while modern, continues the lines of the brick buildings next to it and fits masterfully. Beautiful landscape work too!
