The genesis of design for this desert retreat was the informal dining area in which the clients, along with family and friends, would gather. Located in north Scottsdale’s prestigious Silverleaf, this ranch hacienda offers 6,500 square feet of gracious hospitality for family and friends. Focused around the informal dining area, the home’s living spaces, both indoor and outdoor, offer warmth of materials and proximity for expansion of the casual dining space that the owners envisioned for hosting gatherings to include their two grown children, parents, and many friends. The kitchen, adjacent to the informal dining, serves as the functioning heart of the home and is open to the great room, informal dining room, and office, and is mere steps away from the outdoor patio lounge and poolside guest casita. Additionally, the main house master suite enjoys spectacular vistas of the adjacent McDowell mountains and distant Phoenix city lights. The clients, who desired ample guest quarters for their visiting adult children, decided on a detached guest casita featuring two bedroom suites, a living area, and a small kitchen. The guest casita’s spectacular bedroom mountain views are surpassed only by the living area views of distant mountains seen beyond the spectacular pool and outdoor living spaces. My team took a fresh approach to traditional style in this home. Inspired by fresh cut blossoms and a crisp palette, we transformed the space with airy elegance. Exquisite natural stones and antique silhouettes coupled with chalky white hues created an understated elegance as romantic as a love poem.

The Sonoma Farmhaus project was designed for a cycling enthusiast with a globally demanding professional career, who wanted to create a place that could serve as both a retreat of solitude and a hub for gathering with friends and family. Located within the town of Graton, California, the site was chosen not only to be close to a small town and its community, but also to be within cycling distance to the picturesque, coastal Sonoma County landscape. Taking the traditional forms of farmhouse, and their notions of sustenance and community, as inspiration, the project comprises an assemblage of two forms - a Main House and a Guest House with Bike Barn - joined in the middle by a central outdoor gathering space anchored by a fireplace. The vision was to create something consciously restrained and one with the ground on which it stands. Simplicity, clear detailing, and an innate understanding of how things go together were all central themes behind the design. Solid walls of rammed earth blocks, fabricated from soils excavated from the site, bookend each of the structures. According to the owner, the use of simple, yet rich materials and textures...“provides a humanness I’ve not known or felt in any living venue I’ve stayed, Farmhaus is an icon of sustenance for me".

As mid-century enthusiasts ourselves, we were thrilled when a client asked us to help redesign their grandmother’s house, blending nostalgia with a fresh, modern perspective. The homeowners envisioned a French Provincial-inspired style while preserving the soul of the home. We introduced modern amenities like a full-scale kitchen, mudroom, and open-concept great room while carefully maintaining cherished details—original hallway built-ins, foyer pocket doors, and other vintage touches that carry the home’s history forward. The best compliment? When family remarked, “It feels like you, with an essence of Grandma, but it’s not Grandma’s house anymore.” That perfect balance of honoring the past while celebrating the future is what makes Juniper Lane so special.

Kiawah Island, SC Project Scope: Full Home Reno + Full Home Furnishings The Marsh Edge Escape was a full renovation from top to bottom. The goal being to bring the outside in while creating a modern, minimal, sophisticated home for this well traveled art enthusiastic couple to relax and unwind. We sourced specialty materials like Moroccan zellige tile for the backsplash and hood to create a refined yet relaxed feeling throughout. This retreat is full of vintage finds like the coral stone entryway table and egret legged side table that pairs perfectly with the couples extensive art collection.

The Yellowstone Club, America’s most exclusive ski resort, is located in Big Sky, Montana and is a playground for the outdoor enthusiast who enjoys luxury. Centre Sky Architecture renovated the mid-mountain Rainbow Lodge from 5,000 square feet to almost 14,000 square feet. The original lodge had a heavy emphasis on a traditional feel, touting log walls and trusses and boasting the log cabin feel. The color scheme went to grey and beige tones, lightening the interior. The clients for this small bathroom project are passionate art enthusiasts and asked the architects to create a space based on the work of one of their favorite abstract painters, Piet Mondrian. Mondrian was a Dutch artist associated with the De Stijl movement which reduced designs down to basic rectilinear forms and primary colors within a grid. Alloy used floor to ceiling recycled glass tiles to re-interpret Mondrian's compositions, using blocks of color in a white grid of tile to delineate space and the functions within the small room. A red block of color is recessed and becomes a niche, a blue block is a shower seat, a yellow rectangle connects shower fixtures with the drain. The bathroom also has many aging-in-place design components which were a priority for the clients. There is a zero clearance entrance to the shower. We widened the doorway for greater accessibility and installed a pocket door to save space. ADA compliant grab bars were located to compliment the tile composition. Andrea Hubbell Photography
