A raging firebowl sets off the surrounding foliage and the fire pit begins to blaze to complete an enticing setting to enjoy wine, cheese and cozy conversation. A warm Sandstone colored concrete pool deck stamped with Italian Slate also warms the deck with its earth-tone hues.

Designed for the 2014 Chicago Flower and Garden show, this display garden captures a playful sensibility well-suited for any family to enjoy. The clean, modern lines and carefully planned spaces of this 50’ by 50’ garden form an enticing setting to simply unplug. Working within a very limited area, the design organizes a bio pool with sundeck, a spillover water feature and lounge area, and a gravel dining terrace with a built-in fireplace and shade tree canopy. Unlike traditional pools, our bio pool utilizes aquatic plants, beneficial bacteria, and microbes, rather than harsh chemicals, to filter the water. Impurities and excess nutrients are drawn out of the water naturally, creating a much healthier swimming environment. A native plant palette is incorporated throughout the garden with shade trees, ornamentals, native forbs, and perennials in an emergent spring landscape. We hope this exciting design will encourage green inspiration for visitors, whether they have a tight city lot or a larger suburban property.

This view of the kitchen catches a glimpse of the dining room, and shows a pocket doorway into the adjacent game room. The hutch creates an informal divider between the kitchen and the dining space. All of these elements, from the circular island, to the chandelier over the dining table, including the doorway, and the dining table with chairs, were designed and built in our shop. Each demonstrates the capabilities and vision of a custom designer, well versed in the arts of the cabinetmaker. The creation of a custom kitchen is more than a limited concern with cabinet boxes and their layout around four walls. Great custom work flows seamlessly through adjoining areas of a home. A knowledgeable appreciation of design traditions allows reinterpretation, and entices our creativity in new directions. Revisiting our design heritage honors those who passed before us, but need not involve slavishly retreading their paths. Primary wood species are sycamore and shedua. Charles Renee Macintosh was a wonderful architect who brought to homes objects and features which enriched our perspectives and our daily living. We draw upon his work for inspiration for the those few who truly appreciate the design sensitivity of this great architect. This thoughtful husband wanted to give his wife an Asian-inspired shade garden with deep cedar soaking tub for her 50th birthday - what a guy! They also wanted to encourage their teenagers and friends to hang out at home - smart thinking! The hot tub and deck had to be designed around large existing conifers. The addition of the overhead structure provides visual interest as well as protecting the hot tub from sap and falling debris. This project illustrates skilled woodworking and a minimalist, textural plant palette. We created two separate patios - one for outdoor dining and one with a gas fire table, perfect for enticing teenagers and their friends! Lighting from FX Luminaire highlights the Japanese Maple and illuminates the stamped concrete pathways, creating a magical nighttime effect.
