Patrick & Topaze McCaffery - Taproot Garden Design & Fine Gardening "A hammock set between two Mulberry shade trees provides an escape for the happy wanderer."

Edible landscaping encompasses much more then adding some veggie beds to one’s property. Creative layouts and material usage can incorporate year-round vegetable harvests in an aesthetically pleasing way. Perennial fruit trees, along with bushes and herbs, create a lush space full of beautiful, colors, textures, smells and tastes. Searching out and experimenting with different and rare varieties of edible plants keeps home gardens interesting. Edible landscaping gives access to food at its freshest, when it is most nutritious, and offers many more options than supermarket produce sections—also cutting down on transportation and packaging impacts. From edible estates to food forests, or simple integration of garden-based food production, Sweet Smiling Landscapes has the knowledge and experience to help home owners harvest their own bounty.

Blooming in late spring, perennial Salvia Sylvestris May Night (May Night Meadow Sage), seen here in the right foreground of a Deck and Patio landscape project, boasts deep purple-blue blooms.
The good news for gardeners in our Long Island, NY, area is how hardy this beauty is for our area of the Northeast because it claims superb cold hardiness, is a vigorous plant, and is tolerant of heavy clay soils.
If the robust color isn’t enough to make you rush and pick up some of these Salvias, consider: these plants attract butterflies and hummingbirds, and are deer and rabbit resistant. They make glorious cut flowers for inside and they bloom more than 4 weeks. www.deckandpatio.com

This 30 foot water basin could easily be a swimming pool. It is aligned with the house as a natural extension of the indoors to the outdoors. When you enter the house by the front door the water feature is the visual focal point framed by a long central corridor. Also it is placed so that during the day the sun's rays reflect off the pond surface and dance on the ceiling of the master bedroom. The blue grey slate is a local material and contributes to the sparkling qualities of the moving water.

In the historic community of Casa Blanca in Paradise Valley sits this beautiful and simplistic garden--one that is both secluded and peaceful due to its walled-in enclosures. The elegant foliage palette harmonizes outdoor living at its finest. Cast concrete slabs set the rhythm for the space while succulents and trailing herbs sneak through the hardscape breaks. The sense of privacy and calm created by the vined walls is unparalleled, especially when juxtaposed with the uplifting color from the fields of flax surrounding this truly unique secret garden in the Sonoran Desert.
