These clients win the award for ‘Most Jarrett Design Projects in One Home’! We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have been able to work with these kind folks so consistently over the years. The most recent project features their master bath, a room they have been wanting to tackle for many years. We think it was well worth the wait! It started off as an outdated space with an enormous platform tub open to the bedroom featuring a large round column. The open concept was inspired by island homes long ago, but it was time for some privacy. The water closet, shower and linen closet served the clients well, but the tub and vanities had to be updated with storage improvements desired. The clients also wanted to add organized spaces for clothing, shoes and handbags. Swapping the large tub for a dainty freestanding tub centered on the new window, cleared space for gorgeous his and hers vanities and armoires flanking the tub. The area where the old double vanity existed was transformed into personalized storage closets boasting beautiful custom mirrored doors. The bathroom floors and shower surround were replaced with classic white and grey materials. Handmade vessel sinks and faucets add a rich touch. Soft brass wire doors are the highlight of a freestanding custom armoire created to house handbags adding more convenient storage and beauty to the bedroom. Star sconces, bell jar fixture, wallpaper and window treatments selected by the homeowner with the help of the talented Lisa Abdalla Interiors provide the finishing traditional touches for this sanctuary. This Boulder, Colorado remodel by fuentesdesign demonstrates the possibility of renewal in American suburbs, and Passive House design principles. Once an inefficient single story 1,000 square-foot ranch house with a forced air furnace, has been transformed into a two-story, solar powered 2500 square-foot three bedroom home ready for the next generation. The new design for the home is modern with a sustainable theme, incorporating a palette of natural materials including; reclaimed wood finishes, FSC-certified pine Zola windows and doors, and natural earth and lime plasters that soften the interior and crisp contemporary exterior with a flavor of the west. A Ninety-percent efficient energy recovery fresh air ventilation system provides constant filtered fresh air to every room. The existing interior brick was removed and replaced with insulation. The remaining heating and cooling loads are easily met with the highest degree of comfort via a mini-split heat pump, the peak heat load has been cut by a factor of 4, despite the house doubling in size. During the coldest part of the Colorado winter, a wood stove for ambiance and low carbon back up heat creates a special place in both the living and kitchen area, and upstairs loft. This ultra energy efficient home relies on extremely high levels of insulation, air-tight detailing and construction, and the implementation of high performance, custom made European windows and doors by Zola Windows. Zola’s ThermoPlus Clad line, which boasts R-11 triple glazing and is thermally broken with a layer of patented German Purenit®, was selected for the project. These windows also provide a seamless indoor/outdoor connection, with 9′ wide folding doors from the dining area and a matching 9′ wide custom countertop folding window that opens the kitchen up to a grassy court where mature trees provide shade and extend the living space during the summer months. This is a multi-functional space serving as side entrance, mudroom, laundry room and walk-in pantry all within in a footprint of 125 square feet. The mudroom wish list included a coat closet, shoe storage and a bench, as well as hooks for hats, bags, coats, etc. which we located on its own wall. The opposite wall houses the laundry equipment and sink. The front-loading washer and dryer gave us the opportunity for a folding counter above and helps create a more finished look for the room. The sink is tucked in the corner with a faucet that doubles its utility serving chilled carbonated water with the turn of a dial. The walk-in pantry element of the space is by far the most important for the client. They have a lot of storage needs that could not be completely fulfilled as part of the concurrent kitchen renovation. The function of the pantry had to include a second refrigerator as well as dry food storage and organization for many large serving trays and baskets. To maximize the storage capacity of the small space, we designed the walk-in pantry cabinet in the corner and included deep wall cabinets above following the slope of the ceiling. A library ladder with handrails ensures the upper storage is readily accessible and safe for this older couple to use on a daily basis. A new herringbone tile floor was selected to add varying shades of grey and beige to compliment the faux wood grain laminate cabinet doors. A new skylight brings in needed natural light to keep the space cheerful and inviting. The cookbook shelf adds personality and a shot of color to the otherwise neutral color scheme that was chosen to visually expand the space. Storage for all of its uses is neatly hidden in a beautifully designed compact package!

A British colonial teakwood campaign chest of drawers; can be split in two parts for ease of transport. Campaign or “knock down” furniture was portable military furniture and used by British officers when they set out for a campaign in India. However, because campaign furniture was extremely versatile, it also appealed to home owners who appreciated its elegance, strength and ease of storage. This unique and functional kitchen gives a new meaning to the phrase “Kitchen is the heart of a home”. Here, kitchen is the center of all attention and a conversation piece at every party. Black glass cabinet fronts used in the design offer ease of maintenance, and the kaleidoscope stone countertops and backsplash contrast the cabinetry and always look clean. Color was very important to this Client and this kitchen is definitely not lacking life. Designed for a client who loves to entertain, the centerpiece is an artistic interpretation of a kitchen island. This monolithic sculpture raises out of the white marble floor and glows in this open concept kitchen. But this island isn’t just beautiful. It is also extremely practical. It is designed using two intercrossing parts creating two heights for different purposes. 36” high surface for prep work and 30” high surface for sit down dining. The height differences and location encourages use of the entire table top for preparations. Furthermore, storage cabinets are installed under part of this island closest to the working triangle. For a client who loves to cook, appliances were very important, and sub-zero and wolf appliances we used give them the best product available. Overhead energy efficient LED lighting was selected paying special attention to the lamp’s CRI to ensure proper color rendition of items below, especially important when working with meat. Under-cabinet task lighting offers illumination where it is most needed on the countertops. Like many projects, this began with a discussion about reconfiguring the island and refinishing the cabinets. Then the clients asked if I could change their sink (undermounted below granite), add a second dishwasher, and replace her double oven. When they realized the extent of those requests, they decided they might as well replace the cabinets and get the quality, storage, and finishes they wanted. They desired traditional styling with a French motif, and luxurious, yet durable finishes that would complement her eggplant/gold/green fabrics. To avoid more expense, we kept the existing windows and retained the existing placement of major appliances (except the cooktop which we moved slightly for better function). I relocated the microwave to the island so that we could install a built-in, larger refrigerator. I reconfigured the layout to better accommodate the needs of this large family – they have six children and three dogs. Everyone has breakfast, takes lunches, has dinner at home daily, and even the dog food is cooked from scratch. There are great organizational accessories in the cabinets. The full-extension quiet-close dovetail drawers minimize noise and feel like fine furniture. The cabinet and countertop finishes are extremely durable. Even the Iroko wood eating counter is easily maintained using an oil-wax that repels stains. The island shape provides seating for three as well as room for the cooktop, warming drawer, microwave drawer, and generous storage. The sprawling countertop works well for their volume of food preparation. The desk area now functions with proper phone and electrical outlets, file drawers, and enough counter. The choice of flooring was critical – the kitchen is part of a great room that flows into a large entry hall. The existing travertine, tile, and carpet did not wear well. I selected durable porcelain tiles that resemble limestone and wood and created a European-inspired woven design in the entry. A simpler version of the same materials in the kitchen and an inset real wood into the seating area create flow between the rooms. To create more visual interest, I removed non-critical soffits. The remaining soffits were clad with wood so it appears that all is part of the cabinet design. The mixture of glazed cherry and black rubbed-through-paint on cherry finishes are enhanced by the dramatic black and gold veins in the creamy granite counter. We retained the straw and plaster walls that create an old-world feeling. The custom mahogany and iron pantry door balanced the design and completed this truly unique space. Pewter cabinet hardware and patterned glass accentuate the motif. Many of the cabinet accountrements are made from a compo material and recreate historical French mouldings. The remaining adornments are hand-carved wood. On top of beauty and function, the cabinet boxes are made from environmentally-friendly, no formaldehyde-added agriboard. So we have traditional design, ornate mouldings, multi-step finishes, and are still nice to the earth and my clients! At our Rose Circle project, we did quite a bit to transform this kitchen for our clients. The house had quite a few walls that made the main spaces feel very sectioned off and separate from the rest of the home. When in the kitchen, it was like a cubby secluded from the rest of the house. Our clients major wish was to create an opening from the kitchen into the living room behind it, allowing easier access rather than walking all the way around as well as a large opening duplicating the existing opening next to it which created a much more open kitchen. With these new openings and adding windows to the back wall of the home, which has a great view of Camelback Mountain, it made it feel more open, bigger and brighter while also creating a much more functional kitchen for their needs. We installed all new luxury vinyl throughout, new paint to go with the new color scheme, brand new white cabinets for the perimeter with a custom shiplap hood, a really pretty dark grey stained island with marble looking quartz countertops, subway backsplash and an accent mosaic in the custom cooktop niche that was a special request. With the selections made, it created a really fun "Farmhouse" styled kitchen that also made the home feel cozy and inviting. All the custom touches like the shiplap hood and cooktop niche, made this truly their dream kitchen fit for them! They are extremely happy with the changes we were able to make, created a much better functioning and open home for them.
