In its 34th consecutive year hosting the Street of Dreams, the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Portland decided to do something different. They went urban – into the Pearl District. Each year designers clamor for the opportunity to design and style a home in the Street of Dreams. Apparently the allure of designing in contemporary penthouses with cascading views was irresistible to many, because the HBA experienced record interest from the design community at large in 2009. It was an honor to be one of seven designers selected. “The Luster of the Pearl” combined the allure of clean lines and redefined traditional silhouettes with texture and opulence. The color palette was fashion-inspired with unexpected color combinations like smoky violet and tiger-eye gold backed with metallic and warm neutrals. Our design included cosmetic reconstruction of the fireplace, mosaic tile improvements to the kitchen, artistic custom wall finishes and introduced new materials to the Portland market. The process was a whirlwind of early mornings, late nights and weekends. “With an extremely short timeline with large demands, this Street of Dreams challenged me in extraordinary ways that made me a better project manager, communicator, designer and partner to my vendors.” This project won the People’s Choice Award for Best Master Suite at the Northwest Natural 2009 Street of Dreams. Vintage Cellars, Wine cellar design and build firm out of San Diego, California, worked with this celebrity client closely to create a gorgeous wine storage design to add depth and point of interest to this at home bar. This hybrid style wine cellar / wine room / custom wine cellar / custom wine room utilizes multiple styles of wine racks / wine racking to keep a modern and contemporary, yet refined and traditional feel in this home in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California. On the back wall upper section, simple triple deep metal wine racks are used to showcase wine bottles horizontally, so that high providence wine labels can be displayed and celebrated. Clean black metal wine racking looks great against the white walls behind. In the center row of the back wall, a high reveal display is featured, again for more ability and capacity to show off those prized vintages and bottles. The clients also wanted to add organized spaces for clothing, shoes and handbags. Swapping the large tub for a dainty freestanding tub centered on the new window, cleared space for gorgeous his and hers vanities and armoires flanking the tub. The area where the old double vanity existed was transformed into personalized storage closets boasting beautiful custom mirrored doors. The bathroom floors and shower surround were replaced with classic white and grey materials. Handmade vessel sinks and faucets add a rich touch. Soft brass wire doors are the highlight of a freestanding custom armoire created to house handbags adding more convenient storage and beauty to the bedroom. Star sconces, bell jar fixture, wallpaper and window treatments selected by the homeowner with the help of the talented Lisa Abdalla Interiors provide the finishing traditional touches for this sanctuary. At our Rose Circle project, we did quite a bit to transform this kitchen for our clients. The house had quite a few walls that made the main spaces feel very sectioned off and separate from the rest of the home. When in the kitchen, it was like a cubby secluded from the rest of the house. Our clients major wish was to create an opening from the kitchen into the living room behind it, allowing easier access rather than walking all the way around as well as a large opening duplicating the existing opening next to it which created a much more open kitchen. With these new openings and adding windows to the back wall of the home, which has a great view of Camelback Mountain, it made it feel more open, bigger and brighter while also creating a much more functional kitchen for their needs. We installed all new luxury vinyl throughout, new paint to go with the new color scheme, brand new white cabinets for the perimeter with a custom shiplap hood, a really pretty dark grey stained island with marble looking quartz countertops, subway backsplash and an accent mosaic in the custom cooktop niche that was a special request. With the selections made, it created a really fun "Farmhouse" styled kitchen that also made the home feel cozy and inviting. All the custom touches like the shiplap hood and cooktop niche, made this truly their dream kitchen fit for them! They are extremely happy with the changes we were able to make, created a much better functioning and open home for them.

Like many projects, this began with a discussion about reconfiguring the island and refinishing the cabinets. Then the clients asked if I could change their sink (undermounted below granite), add a second dishwasher, and replace her double oven. When they realized the extent of those requests, they decided they might as well replace the cabinets and get the quality, storage, and finishes they wanted. They desired traditional styling with a French motif, and luxurious, yet durable finishes that would complement her eggplant/gold/green fabrics. To avoid more expense, we kept the existing windows and retained the existing placement of major appliances (except the cooktop which we moved slightly for better function). I relocated the microwave to the island so that we could install a built-in, larger refrigerator. I reconfigured the layout to better accommodate the needs of this large family – they have six children and three dogs. Everyone has breakfast, takes lunches, has dinner at home daily, and even the dog food is cooked from scratch. There are great organizational accessories in the cabinets. The full-extension quiet-close dovetail drawers minimize noise and feel like fine furniture. The cabinet and countertop finishes are extremely durable. Even the Iroko wood eating counter is easily maintained using an oil-wax that repels stains. The island shape provides seating for three as well as room for the cooktop, warming drawer, microwave drawer, and generous storage. The sprawling countertop works well for their volume of food preparation. The desk area now functions with proper phone and electrical outlets, file drawers, and enough counter. The choice of flooring was critical – the kitchen is part of a great room that flows into a large entry hall. The existing travertine, tile, and carpet did not wear well. I selected durable porcelain tiles that resemble limestone and wood and created a European-inspired woven design in the entry. A simpler version of the same materials in the kitchen and an inset real wood into the seating area create flow between the rooms. To create more visual interest, I removed non-critical soffits. The remaining soffits were clad with wood so it appears that all is part of the cabinet design. The mixture of glazed cherry and black rubbed-through-paint on cherry finishes are enhanced by the dramatic black and gold veins in the creamy granite counter. We retained the straw and plaster walls that create an old-world feeling. The custom mahogany and iron pantry door balanced the design and completed this truly unique space. Pewter cabinet hardware and patterned glass accentuate the motif. Many of the cabinet accountrements are made from a compo material and recreate historical French mouldings. The remaining adornments are hand-carved wood. On top of beauty and function, the cabinet boxes are made from environmentally-friendly, no formaldehyde-added agriboard. So we have traditional design, ornate mouldings, multi-step finishes, and are still nice to the earth and my clients! Our second Tonto Trail project in Rio Verde was quite the transformation for Phase 1. The existing flooring throughout was a stamped concrete, the kitchen was outdated and the pantry was a bizarre shape that made it almost unusable. It was time for some changes! We removed soffits and re-arranged the kitchen a little to make it feel more open and functional. Selecting Repose Grey painted cabinetry for the perimeter, a warm grey wood stained island and bar to coordinate, marble quartz, Cloe white subway tile laid in herringbone pattern for the backsplash and a wood tile plank flooring that tied all the tones together, really brightened up the home. Lighting was extremely important to our client, so we added can lighting throughout and LED lighting under all the uppers. For the pantry, it was also important to our client for it to be functional. We reconfigured the surrounding walls to make the pantry more square and bigger on the inside, allowing space for cabinetry, countertops and floating shelves to keep it visually open. By their slider and dining area, we created a bar area to have a beverage fridge and more storage. With changes to openings and existing closets, we were able to gain additional functional storage for our client as well. This remodel has made our clients home more functional, lighter and brighter with updated finishes throughout!

Nestled in a wooded area in the Pacific Northwest, the 1800 sf Passive Cedar Haus was built as a retirement home. The Artisans Group designed the layout of the home, mindful of aging in place, and working to ensure that the home blended in with the surrounding natural beauty. The project meets a complex program, with an unheated sleeping porch for a master bedroom, a screened porch, a 600 sf caretakers apartment/mother in law unit, large wood shop, plus a two car carport. The home seamlessly integrates a floating cedar tongue and groove roof with large sheltering overhangs, clerestory windows, and language of cedar slats for privacy screens and doors inside and out. The warm, natural materials of wood and cork for the interior palette are punctuated by lively accents and stunning fixtures. This ultra energy efficient home relies on extremely high levels of insulation, air-tight detailing and construction, and the implementation of high performance, custom made European windows and doors by Zola Windows. Zola’s ThermoPlus Clad line, which boasts R-11 triple glazing and is thermally broken with a layer of patented German Purenit®, was selected for the project. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the main living area, gives an expansive view of the surrounding Northwest forest. The tops of these windows reveal the interior cedar clad and the up-swept soffits on the home’s exterior, creating a floating ceiling effect. Slatted spruce wood fly-overs break up the vertical areas of the great room and define separate areas that would otherwise feel like an overwhelmingly expansive space. Scott Buley, HTT&T, High Tech Turf & Trees. Another photo of boulders as the soil solution we applied to this rock started moss growing. This extremely steep Historic site slopes down to the City sidewalks. For the purposes of Historic Preservation....using these stones that we excavated out of the ground on the site were a perfect selection and fit to act as an attractive "aged" retainer. Anything else could have been inappropriate.

When our client bought this house, it was stuck in limbo between the traditional interior and a 90's modern structure. The direction we took was a combination of calm beige color scheme with clean lines and smooth surfaces. The continuation of the same materials throughout the house finally bonded all the different spaces into a singular home. The two guest bathrooms were made with Cloe zellige style tiles and custom floating vanities made from white oak. The same oak was used also for the built-in TV wall as floating shelves and base cabinets with a large, tiled center piece for the recessed TV and the electric fireplace. The kitchen also received some of the white oak love in the form of the Island and the recessed cooking area. The biggest issue with the kitchen space was the lack of proportions between the width and its length vs. the extreme height of the vaulted ceiling. The solution I came up with was a secondary line of wall cabinets to be the same depth as the full height units to create a wrap around and make the space more proportionate. Continuing to the master bathroom, here we have a true walk-in master bath suite, no door needed with this size of space. All the walls received porcelain semi slab treatment. (72x36 porcelain tile) a lot of work went into selecting the correct tile pieces to give it the effect of a single slab installation but without the added cost. All fixtures are by Kohler with their fantastic modern gold finish. The result was a perfect flow of calm beige colors and warmth of natural wood throughout.
