2013 NARI CAPITAL COTY, MERIT AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL KITCHEN UNDER $40,000 A young family expecting a child just bought their first home, a 1964 colonial in Annandale, Virginia. There were many areas they wanted to renovate, but with the woman of the house being a professional chef, the kitchen was first and foremost. The existing kitchen was dark and dated. Upon entering the room, all of the appliances were aligned on the far wall, near the doorway to the adjacent dining room. While the original kitchen had a lot of open floor space, it had disconnected workspaces, limited counter space to prepare foods, and was generally dysfunctional. The new owners wished to create a kitchen that would not only serve as a space to efficiently prepare meals, but also as a mini office area where the chef could have access to cookbooks and a desk for recipe writing. Additionally, it needed to be a welcoming, central part of the home where the family could expect to have many informal meals over the years. The chef desired to have more cabinet space while also adding newer, larger and additional appliances to the footprint, such as a second oven. The addition of a large (approximately 4 feet by 7 feet) center island increased both the form and function of the room. The turned-legs and glass-faced curio cabinets that greet visitors offer a strong statement. The island maximized efficiency and was equipped with cabinetry and accessories on every side (e.g., spice cabinet, microwave cabinet, double trash can holder) and would even include an overhang on the side by the windows to serve as a breakfast bar. The large island is covered with a white macauba granite, creating a beautiful and expansive prep space. On the far wall, an airy garden window replaced the flat metal-framed sink window. Below the window sits a large white farm-style sink. The dishwasher and double oven were installed to the right. To the left, a large 29 cubic foot French-door, bottom freezer refrigerator. The selected maple cabinetry is frost white with pewter glazing. Coupled with the island’s espresso black finish, it creates a great yin-yang contrast and balance to the room. The bright cabinetry, garden window, added recess lights, under cabinet lights, embedded lights under the mantle hearth, and inside cabinet lights with dimmer switches enable this room to be as bright as desired. The Zen flare to this classic French Country kitchen is complete with the addition of the Sumatran black standing pebble backsplash. These easy to clean stones add great texture and stunning contrast. The homeowners are extremely satisfied with this new kitchen and are now looking forward to getting the rest of the house renovated.

At our Rose Circle project, we did quite a bit to transform this kitchen for our clients. The house had quite a few walls that made the main spaces feel very sectioned off and separate from the rest of the home. When in the kitchen, it was like a cubby secluded from the rest of the house. Our clients major wish was to create an opening from the kitchen into the living room behind it, allowing easier access rather than walking all the way around as well as a large opening duplicating the existing opening next to it which created a much more open kitchen. With these new openings and adding windows to the back wall of the home, which has a great view of Camelback Mountain, it made it feel more open, bigger and brighter while also creating a much more functional kitchen for their needs. We installed all new luxury vinyl throughout, new paint to go with the new color scheme, brand new white cabinets for the perimeter with a custom shiplap hood, a really pretty dark grey stained island with marble looking quartz countertops, subway backsplash and an accent mosaic in the custom cooktop niche that was a special request. With the selections made, it created a really fun "Farmhouse" styled kitchen that also made the home feel cozy and inviting. All the custom touches like the shiplap hood and cooktop niche, made this truly their dream kitchen fit for them! They are extremely happy with the changes we were able to make, created a much better functioning and open home for them.

For the kitchenette, we selected saturated hues to compliment the wood of the ceiling and flooring. The sconces are truly one of my favorite items in the space. They give this small space high style while also being extremely functional.

The new kitchen needed to please them but timeless for the next owners. They love the modern look but didn't want to take it to the extreme. White, flat panel, cabinets keep it fresh and classic. Adding the vertical marble and glass tile give it a little more modern feel. It is truly a beautiful kitchen that will be pleasing to all that live there. The customers had purchased the home after moving from up North but they were unhappy with the kitchen area. Specifically, they wanted to turn their kitchen from a segmented room into a large open space that encompassed a fireplace at one end. This area of the home already had some great features that we wanted to show off to their best advantage, including beautiful, arched, huge windows and glass patio doors that looked out down the beach as well as the 12 to 15 foot ceilings. We worked with the client at our Largo location to develop a design. They selected a KraftMaid Lindale-painted dove white cabinet including all of the bells and whistles like soft closing doors and drawers. Due to the height of the room they chose very large upper cabinets stacked with glass and decorate panels around the sides and fronts to display decorative items and beach artifacts. This choice gave the room an open, airy feeling and the light color works with the sunlight to really brighten the space. As part of this remodel, the client also updated all of their appliances so our design seamlessly incorporated them into the space, both along the walls and in their wonderful, large island. This room is now the heart of the main floor and this brilliant, eye-catching space is a place to gather with friends and family, dine and relax. It was a significant remodel project and we needed to work around other trades, such as glaziers, electricians, plumbers and flooring experts. We are experts at working in this type of environment and, though there were a few delays due to challenges in coordinating work timelines, the client and his wife were extremely pleased with the results.

The direction we took was a combination of calm beige color scheme with clean lines and smooth surfaces. The continuation of the same materials throughout the house finally bonded all the different spaces into a singular home. The two guest bathrooms were made with Cloe zellige style tiles and custom floating vanities made from white oak. The same oak was used also for the built-in TV wall as floating shelves and base cabinets with a large, tiled center piece for the recessed TV and the electric fireplace. The kitchen also received some of the white oak love in the form of the Island and the recessed cooking area. The biggest issue with the kitchen space was the lack of proportions between the width and its length vs. the extreme height of the vaulted ceiling. The solution I came up with was a secondary line of wall cabinets to be the same depth as the full height units to create a wrap around and make the space more proportionate. Continuing to the master bathroom, here we have a true walk-in master bath suite, no door needed with this size of space. All the walls received porcelain semi slab treatment. (72x36 porcelain tile) a lot of work went into selecting the correct tile pieces to give it the effect of a single slab installation but without the added cost. All fixtures are by Kohler with their fantastic modern gold finish. The result was a perfect flow of calm beige colors and warmth of natural wood throughout.

This stunning design enhanced the arched cathedral ceiling of this castle style formal dining room incorporating multiple fabrics including the client’s existing diamond pin tuck panels that she had purchased initially when moving into her new home. Our challenge was creating a design that allowed us to use the panels that were too short to work in the overall treatment and using fabrics that would look as if the client’s panels were an integral part of the design and not something we had to use . In a time when our client’s are more conscious of not wasting money, we are called upon to reuse, repurpose items that they may already have. We used layering of fabrics to achieve a luxurious layered look in our drapes combining the client’s diamond pin tuck, the beautiful flocked medallion faux silk and a scrumptious silk velvet in vintage brown trimmed in an eye catching drop crystal and ball fringe with a coordinating small drop crystal trim between layers. The empire swags in the flocked face fabric were banded with the velvet and trimmed with the crystal and ball trim. The straight line of the French doors were camouflaged to reflect the beautiful cathedral ceiling. We mounted the swags on blocks for a softly arching design complementing the ceiling. All the fabrics were extremely stain resistant and would not fade in the sunlight. The client was thrilled with the outcome and very pleased that her initial selection of panels were a part of the final design.

These clients win the award for ‘Most Jarrett Design Projects in One Home’! We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have been able to work with these kind folks so consistently over the years. The most recent project features their master bath, a room they have been wanting to tackle for many years. We think it was well worth the wait! It started off as an outdated space with an enormous platform tub open to the bedroom featuring a large round column. The open concept was inspired by island homes long ago, but it was time for some privacy. The water closet, shower and linen closet served the clients well, but the tub and vanities had to be updated with storage improvements desired. The clients also wanted to add organized spaces for clothing, shoes and handbags. Swapping the large tub for a dainty freestanding tub centered on the new window, cleared space for gorgeous his and hers vanities and armoires flanking the tub. The area where the old double vanity existed was transformed into personalized storage closets boasting beautiful custom mirrored doors. The bathroom floors and shower surround were replaced with classic white and grey materials. Handmade vessel sinks and faucets add a rich touch. Soft brass wire doors are the highlight of a freestanding custom armoire created to house handbags adding more convenient storage and beauty to the bedroom. Star sconces, bell jar fixture, wallpaper and window treatments selected by the homeowner with the help of the talented Lisa Abdalla Interiors provide the finishing traditional touches for this sanctuary. Best dining room in San Diego. The stylish, young couple found us in their search for the right architect and interior designer to collaborate on their first custom home. The design inspiration was modern with a high-style glamorous edge. All of the furniture is custom made and extremely detail-oriented. What began as a small, extremely dated kitchen in this 1929 Spanish Casa with an even tinier nook that you could hardly eat in has turned into a gorgeous stunner full of life! We stayed true to the original style of the home and selected materials to complement and update its Spanish aesthetic. Luckily for us, our clients were on board with some color-loving ideas too!
