This two stall horse barn design project is located on a three acre parcel of land. The design needed to reflect the materials and style of the owner’s residence and existing guesthouse. The structure had to be sited so as not to disturb views or offend neighbors. The brick and lap siding, and the roofing also had to match the existing structures. The interior was finished with red cedar and custom stall fronts. The interior of stalls was lined with HDPE recycled lumber.

This 215 acre private horse breeding and training facility can house up to 70 horses. Equine Facility Design began the site design when the land was purchased in 2001 and has managed the design team through construction which completed in 2009. Equine Facility Design developed the site layout of roads, parking, building areas, pastures, paddocks, trails, outdoor arena, Grand Prix jump field, pond, and site features. The structures include a 125’ x 250’ indoor steel riding arena building design with an attached viewing room, storage, and maintenance area; and multiple horse barn designs, including a 15 stall retirement horse barn, a 22 stall training barn with rehab facilities, a six stall stallion barn with laboratory and breeding room, a 12 stall broodmare barn with 12’ x 24’ stalls that can become 12’ x 12’ stalls at the time of weaning foals. Equine Facility Design also designed the main residence, maintenance and storage buildings, and pasture shelters. Improvements include pasture development, fencing, drainage, signage, entry gates, site lighting, and a compost facility.

On a challenging sloped 10 acre property, Equine Facility Design provided building and site design for a private stable. The stable consists of four stalls with runs, wash/groom stall, office/feed room, and attached two bay garage. A raised center aisle and double sided glazed clerestory provide natural light and ventilation to the building. Located just steps away from the existing residence, views of the horses looking out their stalls and in their runs can be seen from many of family’s rooms.

A home office off the kitchen can be concealed with a pocket door. Gray-painted maple Wood-Mode cabinetry complements the kitchen finishes but makes the space unique. **Project Overview** A small, quiet, efficient office space for one that is perfect for sorting mail and paying bills. Though small it has a great deal of natural light and views out the front of the house of the lush landscaping and wildlife. A pocket door makes the office disappear when it's time to entertain. **What Makes This Project Unique?** Small yet incredibly functional, this desk space is a comfortable, quiet place to catch up on home management tasks. Filled with natural light and offering a view of lush landscaping, the compact space is light and airy. To keep it from feeling cramped or crowded, we complemented warm gray-painted maple cabinetry with light countertops and tile. Taller ceilings allow ample storage, including full-height open storage, to manage all of the papers, files and extras that find their way into the home. **Design Challenges** While the office was intentionally designed into a tiny nook off the kitchen and pantry, we didn't want it to feel small for the people using it. By keeping the color palette light, taking cabinetry to the ceiling, incorporating open storage and maximizing natural light, the space feels cozy, and larger than it actually is. This existing hunter jumper boarding and training barn was completely renovated with demolition and replacement of existing stalls and support facilities. New aisle, stalls, groom, tack, feed, office and viewing room were constructed adjacent to the existing steel covered arena. The site provided opportunity to incorporate both active and passive solar design into the structure. South facing glass walls along a corridor and the viewing room, along with designed thermal storage in masonry mass and appropriate insulation creates a design which will keep occupants comfortable and lower energy costs. The stall walls are lined with bamboo lumber. Induction lighting fixtures are installed throughout the barn and arena to reduce energy consumption.
