Inspiration for an eclectic porch remodel in DC Metro

Our client loved their existing deck and used it whenever they could. Unfortunately, summer heat and pesky insects often cut their deck time short. We knew just what to do. With an outstanding design by Scott McElrath and Dangerous Architects, we rebuilt their deck's old substructure with all-new Wolmonized wood and weather-resistant fasteners. We resurfaced the deck with AKEK composite decking material, a new Westbury aluminum railing system with locking gates, built a new gabled roof -tying into the existing roof, and enclosed it with CRIMSAFE security screens. The new screened-in deck area features a vaulted stained cedar ceiling, ceiling fan, and locking screen security door. Recessed eyeball lighting with warm white LED bulbs were used to light the separate counter space areas. The recessed lighting over the island was partly prewired so they could be aligned evenly with the island counter space. The vaulted ceiling presented an added challenge to centering the recessed lighting.

This TV Room just off the kitchen was not very comfortable and the heavy looking leather sofa wasn't surviving the client's two big exuberant labs. We brightened and made the room cozier with a new sectional in a practically indestructible Crypton chenille fabric. We also clad the inset TV with the same stone that appears in the great room. The effect gives the impression of a fireplace.

For those lucky enough to live lakeside in New Hampshire, warm evening summer breezes are best enjoyed from a comfortable screened porch. This summer camp underwent a drastic renovation and expansion so the family could enjoy life at the lake and offer year-round living to future generations. The project’s design especially focused around expanding the existing screened porch, where the family spends most of their time. Keeping the porch at the best viewing corner of the home, while expanding into a wrap-around style to best take in the water views, was important. Meticulous planning helped navigate the design around strict allowances for a residence with such close proximity to the water, per the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. To make the camp a family cottage, there was a complete re-facing of the exterior, a mudroom addition and a dormer addition to create an office space open to living areas below. Extensive renovations to the interior resulted in a new kitchen for family to gather, reconfiguration to create a first-floor master suite and improved access to the exterior, especially the wrap-around porch. Now the home, and porch, can be enjoyed to the fullest by the owners, family and friends. Greg West
