The Kiguchi family moved into their Austin, Texas home in 1994. Built in the 1980’s as part of a neighborhood development, they happily raised their family here but longed for something more contemporary. Once they became empty nesters, they decided it was time for a major remodel. After spending many years visiting Austin AIA Home Tours that highlight contemporary residential architecture, they had a lot of ideas and in 2013 were ready to interview architects and get their renovation underway. The project turned into a major remodel due to an unstable foundation. Architects Ben Arbib and Ed Hughey, of Arbib Hughey Design were hired to solve the structural issue and look for inspiration in the bones of the house, which sat on top of a hillside and was surrounded by great views. Unfortunately, with the old floor plan, the beautiful views were hidden by small windows that were poorly placed. In order to bring more natural light into the house the window sizes and configurations had to be addressed, all while keeping in mind the homeowners desire for a modern look and feel. To achieve a more contemporary and sophisticated front of house, a new entry was designed that included removing a two-story bay window and porch. The entrance of the home also became more integrated with the landscape creating a template for new foliage to be planted. Older exterior materials were updated to incorporate a more muted palette of colors with a metal roof, dark grey siding in the back and white stucco in the front. Deep eaves were added over many of the new large windows for clean lines and sun protection. “Inside it was about opening up the floor plan, expanding the views throughout the house, and updating the material palette to get a modern look that was also warm and inviting,” said Ben from Arbib Hughey Design. “Prior to the remodel, the house had the typical separation of rooms. We removed the walls between them and changed all of the windows to Milgard Thermally Improved Aluminum to connect the inside with the outside. No matter where you are you get nice views and natural light.” The architects wanted to create some drama, which they accomplished with the window placement and opening up the interior floor plan to an open concept approach. Cabinetry was used to help delineate intimate spaces. To add warmth to an all-white living room, white-washed oak wood floors were installed and pine planks were used around the fireplace. The large windows served as artwork bringing the color of nature into the space. An octagon shaped, elevated dining room, (named “the turret”), had a big impact on the design of the house. They architects rounded the corners and added larger window openings overlooking a new sunken garden. The great room was also softened by rounding out the corners and that circular theme continued throughout the house, being picked up in skylight wells and kitchen cabinetry. A staircase leading to a catwalk was added and the result was a two-story window wall that flooded the home with natural light. When asked why Milgard® Thermally Improved Aluminum windows were selected, the architectural team listed many reasons: 1) Aesthetics: “We liked the slim profiles and narrow sightlines. The window frames never get in the way of the view and that was important to us. If you’re a first time buyer in the process of renovating or redecorating your new property, you may well discover some fantastic tiled floors hidden under your carpets. Certainly in my experience this happens quite often, so it came as no surprise when I got a call from a couple who had pulled up the carpet in the kitchen of their new house in Chester to find Quarry tiles, along with some fantastic Victorian tiles in the hallway. While the Quarry tiles were in relatively good condition – having been shielded by carpet for many years – the couple were still understandably keen to get them back to looking their very best. I was more than happy to help them do just that. Before beginning the restoration, I removed the kick boards from the kitchen cupboards so as not to damage them. I then applied a solution of our versatile, high alkaline cleaner, Tile Doctor Pro Clean, and let it soak into the tiles for a short period before scrubbing it in using a rotary machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad. Pro Clean is suitable for use on most natural stone tiles, including Quarry, Victorian and Slate, doing the trick to break down medium to heavy soil buildup. The floor was then rinsed off with clean water, and the resulting slurry was promptly removed using a wet vac. I then left the floor dry out overnight. I returned to the property the next morning, and started out by taking a couple of damp meter readings to make sure the floor was dry enough to seal. This is an essential task before sealing any tiled floor as even the smallest amount of excess moisture can cloud the sealer and damage its performance. To seal the floor, I firstly applied one coat of Tile Doctor Colour Grow, which really brought out the natural reddish shades in the Quarry. As an impregnating sealer, Colour Colour fills the pores in the stone and prevents dirt from becoming ingrained. I followed the application of Colour Grow by applying three coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go Extra. As a topical sealer, Seal and Go Extra forms an additional stain resistant seal on the surface of the tiles to protect against dirt and stains. It also gave the tiles a quality sheen finish as requested by the customer. The customers were very happy with their newly restored Quarry tiled floor. They left the following feedback: “We were both thrilled to bits with how nice the Quarry tiled kitchen floor looked, after being cleaned and sealed. Our client bought her apartment a while ago, since the place needed a renovation we were there to make her dream come true. In this project we demolished the kitchen, the bathroom, we ripped out the old floors, we added new light fixtures, in some areas we added new gypsum wall boards, all walls were skim coated. It was a one bedroom apartment with living room, one bathroom and kitchen. In this case, we did not change the layout. Starting from the kitchen, we removed old cabinets, old appliances, old floor. The new electrical panel had to be relocated to the hallway, it was in the kitchen previously behind the cabinets, in accordance with the local laws, it could not stay there. In the kitchen remodeling our client got beautiful custom made white shaker style cabinet fronts with some special detail, beautiful white Carrera stone counters, grey subway tiles in the backsplash, under mount dimmable cabinet LED light, ceiling slim recessed dimmable LED lighting, the new tiled niche under the window, the tiled floor that was set in herringbone pattern and stainless steel appliances. In the bathroom, the old bathtub stayed in its place, we only had to resurface it. New white glossy subway tiles were installed on the walls. We built for her custom made bathroom vanity and medicine cabinet. On the ceiling, we added slim recessed dimmable LED light and one light above the medicine cabinet. In the living room, we installed new gypsum wall boards on the ceiling and on the wall due to severe cracks. On one of the walls, we added two beautiful wall sconces. In the bedroom we built custom made closet with four doors; the closet interior was made of walnut veneer, the closet doors, as well as the rest of the new doors within the apartment, were fabricated in the same style/ design. The closet equipped with motion sensors, once you open the closet door the closet became illuminated; we used dimmable LED strip light inside. We used white oak wood floor planks with natural, polyurethane matte finish. Moreover, we installed new baseboard, door and window casing molding, wall picture molding and crown molding in the kitchen. You be the judge and tell us how we did. Basically, we built her new custom-made kitchen with lots of drawers, custom made living room closets with shelving units, custom bathroom vanity, custom build in unit with drawers in the lower part and doors in the upper section. All units interiors were made of pre-finished maple and outside lacquer finished was matched with Benjamin Moor paint color with more glossy sheen. Overall, the project was finished with total client’s satisfaction.

Victorian tiled floors are known for their interesting and unique mosaic patterns – and this one was no different. It was installed at a house in the historic West Midlands town of Stourbridge (famous for its glass industry). Unfortunately it was now looking worse for wear and was in dire need of not just cleaning and sealing, but also some minor repairs and the owner was keen to have it restored back to its former glory. This particular Victorian tiled floor had been arranged in a fantastic pattern comprising tiles in shades of yellow, blue, red and white. There were, however, some missing tiles but fortunately I know a number of specialist suppliers where I can source replacements. I spent the first day making minor repairs and replacing the missing tiles, including the grouting, and then left the treated areas to set overnight. On the second day I returned to the house to complete the cleaning process starting with a combination of Tile Doctor Remove & Go – a powerful sealer stripper – and Tile Doctor NanoTech HBU cleaner to lift out ingrained dirt and break down old layers of sealer. NanoTech HBU is particularly effective as it utilises tiny nano sized particles to penetrate deep into the stone and lift out the dirt. The resultant slurry was rinsed off the floor and removed using a wet vacuum. The next step was to give the floor an acid wash using Tile Doctor Acid Gel, this product can remove old grout haze and other mineral deposits, additionally being in a gel form makes it easy to control and although primarily designed for use on walls it works really well on floors as well. Following this I gave the floor a thorough rinse, dried as much as possible with a wet vacuum and left it to dry overnight, ready to be sealed the next day. Upon my return to the house on the third day I set about sealing the floor, checking first that the area was completely dried by running damp tests with damp meter, all was well so I able to start applying the sealer. The sealer chosen for this floor was Tile Doctor Seal and Go which is a water based product which is a popular choice as it gives the floor a nice sheen and doesn’t leave the smell that the solvent based sealers do; three thin coats were applied to provide a robust surface seal and to achieve a semi-shine finish, as per the client’s requested. My client was extremely pleased with the results, with a lot achieved over the space of roughly two and a half days. They left the following feedback: “Mick did a fantastic job. Kim Quigley joined Roundtree in 2015 as our purchasing director. Kim searches far and wide for the best plants at the best value for all our clients. She loves the hunt involved with making sure we have the perfect plants for all our projects. Kim monitors all the vendors who deliver plants and hardgoods to us and ensures everything is on time and running smoothly. Kim’s roots in the green industry go all the way back to when she was only six years old, when she would spend time at what was then Vickery Florist (now Vickery Wholesale Greenhouse). Her parents were best friends with the founding owners of Vickery. She has fond memories of the greenhouses and spent some time later in her career working in interior plantscaping. Kim has managed landscape installations and worked on the retail side of the horticulture industry. Since 2008 Kim has also designed and installed decorations for the Queen of the Rose Festivals Ball, held during the Tyler rose festival weekend. After spending 22 years running her own corporate special events company in the convention world, Kim decided she missed working in the plant world. She loves plants and the friendly welcoming feel our industry offers and loves balancing operations and logistics. The position with Roundtree felt like the perfect fit. When it comes to her favorite part of her job here at Roundtree, Kim says she loves making such a diverse group of people – both at the company and our clients – happy with their projects by finding the very best plants and features.
