This Greek Revival row house in Boerum Hill was previously owned by a local architect who renovated it several times, including the addition of a two-story steel and glass extension at the rear. The new owners came to us seeking to restore the house and its original formality, while adapting it to the modern needs of a family of five. The detailing of the 25 x 36 foot structure had been lost and required some sleuthing into the history of Greek Revival style in historic Brooklyn neighborhoods.
In addition to completely re-framing the interior, the house also required a new south-facing brick façade due to significant deterioration. The modern extension was replaced with a more traditionally detailed wood and copper- clad bay, still open to natural light and the garden view without sacrificing comfort. The kitchen was relocated from the first floor to the garden level with an adjacent formal dining room. Both rooms were enlarged from their previous iterations to accommodate weekly dinners with extended family. The kitchen includes a home office and breakfast nook that doubles as a homework station. The cellar level was further excavated to accommodate finished storage space and a playroom where activity can be monitored from the kitchen workspaces.
The parlor floor is now reserved for entertaining. New pocket doors can be closed to separate the formal front parlor from the more relaxed back portion, where the family plays games or watches TV together. At the end of the hall, a powder room with brass details, and a luxe bar with antique mirrored backsplash and stone tile flooring, leads to the deck and direct garden access. Because of the property width, the house is able to provide ample space for the interior program within a shorter footprint. This allows the garden to remain expansive, with a small lawn for play, an outdoor food preparation area with a cast-in-place concrete bench, and a place for entertaining towards the rear. The newly designed landscaping will continue to develop, further enhancing the yard’s feeling of escape, and filling-in the views from the kitchen and back parlor above. A less visible, but equally as conscious, addition is a rooftop PV solar array that provides nearly 100% of the daily electrical usage, with the exception of the AC system on hot summer days.
The well-appointed interiors connect the traditional backdrop of the home to a youthful take on classic design and functionality. The materials are elegant without being precious, accommodating a young, growing family. Unique colors and patterns provide a feeling of luxury while inviting inhabitants and guests to relax and enjoy this classic Brooklyn brownstone.

Master Bedroom, Venetian Plastered Ceiling in "Papyrus" texture
Dana Point, CA
Interior Designer, Beth Whitlinger, www.bwid.com
When the Interior Designer described the wall covering as being a silver leafed pattern along with oodles of sumptuous natural fiber fabrics on the bedding, chairs, and window treatments, this plaster finish came to mind as being the perfect invention of richness and texture to be in relationship with the rhythm of natural linens and silks in this significant House of Design space. The color was chosen to coordinate with the natural stone of the fireplace, the glint and gleam of the burnished cross-hatched Venetian Plaster was meant to support the bling Beth brought into this room through the chandelier and the headboard wall and other more subtle details.
This ceiling finish, so I was told by one of the docents, was one of the top three talked about topics of this magnificent space. I was glad to hear, as this was a finish designed and mixed up in my artist's workshop with the confidence it would do the trick. The overall design was impeccable as delivered by the very talented Beth Whitlinger.
I sincerely hope to perform this finish again and again. It is quite remarkably unique as well as a beautiful backdrop to rich decor.

Our Aspen studio designed this classy and sophisticated home with a stunning polished wooden ceiling, statement lighting, and sophisticated furnishing that give the home a luxe feel. We used a lot of wooden tones and furniture to create an organic texture that reflects the beautiful nature outside. The three bedrooms are unique and distinct from each other. The primary bedroom has a magnificent bed with gorgeous furnishings, the guest bedroom has beautiful twin beds with colorful decor, and the kids' room has a playful bunk bed with plenty of storage facilities. We also added a stylish home gym for our clients who love to work out and a library with floor-to-ceiling shelves holding their treasured book collection.

The Home
The Bannockburn is a uniquely-designed ranch home that features amazing mountain views from multiple rooms. Situated on
two-and-a-half acres, this “rustic, industrial farmhouse” includes four bedrooms, four baths and an oversized four-car finished
garage, along with a whole-house stereo. The 12-foot tall main ceilings and bright open rooms, with the natural white oak
floors, immediately give the sense of home entertainment.
The unique butler bar connects to the gourmet kitchen, blending the ten-and-a-half foot granite-surface island with unique
gabion features. The spacious quartz counter for food prep, along with the rear windows for viewing the wildlife, are a bonus.
For eating spaces, along with the butler bar and island, there is a large dinette and large dining/flex room with oversized
windows overlooking the covered sun deck. The master suite features a rustic wood and iron-trimmed fireplace, a super shower
with gabion vanity accents, large mirrors, a makeup station and floor-to-ceiling tile. The master closet connects to the laundry,
featuring an eight-foot bench and cubby row, diamond plate tile flooring, plenty of cabinets and a desk with filing space.
The lower-level, iron and rusted metal fireplace with an exposed aggregate concrete floor enhance the natural industrial look.
The rec room and full galley leads to the walkout patio for a future barbecue, hot tub or firepit.

The Interior Design
Blending both farmhouse and industrial styles in several features, this home seamlessly flows from room to room. The classicstyle trim and over-the-door transoms on the main level meld the past with the present. Soft grays and whites coupled with stark reds and blacks bring the home to life. Distinctive gabion features throughout the home, coupled with natural granite, white oak and alder woods, bring in the outdoors. Uniqueness, flow, design and superior quality are the hallmarks of this 2020 Parade home.

We renovated the built-in bookshelves. Glass doors were added to the upper cabinets. The doors on the lower cabinets now match the doors on the island. We used antique style glass in the doors to add character. The center section of the shelves was lined with bead board to tie the shelves into the new room. Note the pendent lights and can lights in the ceiling making the room bright even on the coldest of winter days.

The Jack + Mare designed and built this custom kitchen and dining remodel for a family in Portland's Sellwood Westmoreland Neighborhood.
The wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed to create an inviting and flowing space with custom details in all directions. The custom maple dining table was locally milled and crafted from a tree that had previously fallen in Portland's Laurelhurst neighborhood; and the built-in L-shaped maple banquette provides unique comfortable seating with drawer storage beneath. The integrated kitchen and dining room has become the social hub of the house – the table can comfortably sit up to 10 people!
Being that the kitchen is visible from the dining room, the refrigerator and dishwasher are hidden behind cabinet door fronts that seamlessly tie-in with the surrounding cabinetry creating a warm and inviting space.
The end result is a highly functional kitchen for the chef and a comfortable and practical space for family and friends.
Details: custom cabinets (designed by The J+M) with shaker door fronts, a baker's pantry, built-in banquette with integrated storage, custom local silver maple table, solid oak flooring to match original 1925 flooring, white ceramic tile backsplash, new lighting plan featuring a Cedar + Moss pendant, all L.E.D. can lights, Carrara marble countertops, new larger windows to bring in more natural light and new trim.
The combined kitchen and dining room is 281 Square feet.

Our San Francisco studio designed this beautiful four-story home for a young newlywed couple to create a warm, welcoming haven for entertaining family and friends. In the living spaces, we chose a beautiful neutral palette with light beige and added comfortable furnishings in soft materials. The kitchen is designed to look elegant and functional, and the breakfast nook with beautiful rust-toned chairs adds a pop of fun, breaking the neutrality of the space. In the game room, we added a gorgeous fireplace which creates a stunning focal point, and the elegant furniture provides a classy appeal. On the second floor, we went with elegant, sophisticated decor for the couple's bedroom and a charming, playful vibe in the baby's room. The third floor has a sky lounge and wine bar, where hospitality-grade, stylish furniture provides the perfect ambiance to host a fun party night with friends. In the basement, we designed a stunning wine cellar with glass walls and concealed lights which create a beautiful aura in the space. The outdoor garden got a putting green making it a fun space to share with friends.
