Natural materials and plant filters are without a doubt the ideal option for gardens like these. The beautiful property certainly contributes a great deal to the overall visual impression, but the pool - as close to nature as possible and reduced to essentials - has the look and feel of a body of water that was created here quite naturally. The addition of the wooden planks and the long, slender shape of the pool are visually very appealing. The water’s edge of the regeneration area blends harmoniously into the landscape and appears as if it had grown there naturally over several years.

The primary bathroom had separate vanities and a small corner shower with a large dated jacuzzi tub. We expanded the bathroom by taking some room for one existing closet, which allowed for dual vanities and a seated makeup vanity. We relocated the shower to the tub area, allowing for a seated bench in a nice sized shower. A half wall allows for extra light to filter in from the glass block. The two separate closets were joined and renoated to create a larger more functional space. The result is more function as well as beauty.

This living room is enhanced by small aperture, flangeless ceiling lights and sound. The TV is perfect for the space, and the soundbar not only sounds great but it also looks amazing. Rather than matching the soundbar to the TV through a grill that extends but is hollow on the ends, we selected a custom built soundbar with everything uniquely designed for this TV—from the size of the frame, to the exact locations of the speaker drivers inside. It's a perfect match. A lot of design went into the ceiling sound and lighting, as well. Each LED lamp in the ceiling is individually wired home and individually addressable by the system for uniquely dynamic scenes: entertain, movie-time, evening, away, etc.. For the wall art, the lights were chosen for their beam spread, filter, angle, and more. The end result is wall art that pops in the evening.

View from across the pool: This project included new hardscaping, full patio, pool reshaping, plaster, underwater lights, glass tile and of course, a large area to relax. The home, built circa 1940's, is over 5000 square feet and at one point in time, the largest house in Sacramento. It was only natural that the original pool was enormous: We were able to recreate the classic grandeur of the original design- while updating and upgrading the entire poolscape and equipment. A tricky part of this remodel, was the sheer size- the pool had to be rebuilt almost entirely, and the shape was modified. Devereux Beach House Our client presented Flavin Architects with a unique challenge. On a site that previously hosted two houses, our client asked us to design a modestly sized house and separate art studio. Both structures reduce the height and bulk of the original buildings. The modern concrete house we designed is situated on the brow of a steep cliff overlooking Marblehead harbor. The concrete visually anchors the house to stone outcroppings on the property, and the low profile ensures the structure doesn’t conflict with the surround of traditional, gabled homes. Three primary concrete walls run north to south in parallel, forming the structural walls of the home. The entry sequence is carefully considered. The front door is hidden from view from the street. An entry path leads to an intimate courtyard, from which the front door is first visible. Upon entering, the visitor gets the first glimpse of the sea, framed by a portal of cast-in-place concrete. The kitchen, living, and dining space have a soaring 10-foot ceiling creating an especially spacious sense of interiority. A cantilevered deck runs the length of the living room, with a solid railing providing privacy from beach below. Where the house grows from a single to a two-story structure, the concrete walls rise magisterially to the full height of the building. The exterior concrete walls are accented with zinc gutters and downspouts, and wooden Ipe slats which softly filter light through the windows.

Our customer wanted a rock water fall into the pool, without the maintenance and debris of building a natural waterfall- so we built this faux rock water fall which turned out great.

We removed the wall between the shower and previous tub surround to increase the shower size and filter light within the space. A shower bench was another addition.
